It Is the belief of his trlends lat he can be nominated and the fact that the same men who were so Insistent that either Taggart or Appcl should head the ticket have signed his petition has given rise to the report that he ha been agreed on as the most available candidate.

Maguire is a thorough administration man. being at this time a member of the Board of Public Works and having been a member of the Board of Safety during Taggart's first two terms. It I Furniahea a Puzzle for the Secre tary of State Trust Law.

Union B. Hunjl, Secretary of State, Is Irt a quandary over the reply he re ceived from the United States Steel Corporationthe steel trust to whose representatives he wrote, notifying them that the corporation would' be expected to file articles on the amouht of capital it had invested in Indiana. The company informed him that it simply owned stock in the companies In this State, and that in it was not a separate corporation. It expected the separate compa nies to file on the amount of their re spective investments in the State. Some of the steel companies have filed articles, others have not.

Mr. Hunt will probably submit matter 'to the Attorney General for an opinion, as he is not aatlsfled with the reply, and yet in the face of it does not know what step to lake next. "With regard to the combinations known to, be "trusts" in the generally accepted meaning of the terra, he holds that under the" foreign corporation act he Is bound to' accept their articles, and that he would be disobeying the law If he did not allow 'them to incorporate in the State. Attorney General Taylor 1 said to day. unofficially, there is no violation of other law in accepting articles of corporations under the foreign corporation act passed bv the last Legislature.

He was not closely familiar with all the provisions of the act. he said, but as far as Its effect was concerned, it only gave Indiana interests opportunity to proceed against the corporations in, the same way that they, would proceed against a corporation with headquarters in this State. It gave a Knowledge or tne Dusiness or the foreign corporations ana Drought rightful fees In to the State treasury. While the. Attorney General does not talk as to methods of procedure against trusts In Indiana, it is understood that no test is to be made of the Cooper "antitrust" act.

passed? by the last Legislature. At the time the lkw was passed, lawyers of this city and tn the State said its nnovlslons were of the weakest character and that no more, could be done under it against combinations tn traae man coutu be done under the common law. When asked with regard to the scope of the act. Attorpey Oeneral Taylor said he had not yet taken up the trust quesUon and that he would not like to give an opinion on the sttjength of the law.
