Funeral held for ex-Dog John Cook Jr. From Staff Reporti ROME, Ga. Services were held here Friday for John H. Cook Jr. of Rome, a former University of Georgia football player.

Cook died of leukemia Wednesday at Floyd Medical Center here. He was 60. Cook was a tailback on the 1943-46 Georgia teams and was named All-SEC in 1943. He had an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown against VMI that year, ninth longest in school He went on to play with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League in 1947- 48. He worked for.

Cook was a retired vice president of Citizens Federal Savings and Loan Association here. Surviving are a son, John H. Cook III of Atlanta; two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Coston of Largo; and Miss Michelle Cook of Rome; three Karl Nebel of Calhoun, Niels Nebel of San Francisco, and Matthew Nebel of Atlanta; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Belinda Satcher of Rome; and his mother, Mrs.

We know we're better than what we showed against Miami, but we've got to prove it" Bell has completed 30 of 53 passes but for only 297 yards.

With a rushing attack that gained only 59 yards against Miami, the Gators feel they must crank up the passing game. The Gators, have been much stronger on defense, limiting Miami quarterback Vinny Testa verde to only 12 completions in 25 attempts for 163 yards. And they allowed Miami only 147 yards rushing. 4 Their target this week, Shula, is 36-of-61 for 384 yards, with over half of those completions and yards going by design to his backs. He has, however, thrown four interceptions.

"Shula is tougher to defense than Testa verde," said Florida cornerback Jarvis Williams, "because he uses his backs more. His passing game is more of a possession-type thing and that's a lot tougher on a defensive back than the deep stuff. It puts more pressure on the whole defense." Alabama will miss its starting running backs. Tailback Gene Jelks has a severely sprained ankle and fullback Doug Allen a strained knee. But the Tide is deep at the with four other backs who have played extensively, i M36-1 1 likely, Alabama coach Ray Perkins said, "I don't see this becoming a high-scoring game, just a good old head-knocker, "I told our players Florida is one of the top five or six teams in the country, and coming off that loss to Miami makes them even more dangerous.

This game may not decide the conference championship, but it's definitely one of the biggest games we've played since I've been at Alabama. And we're going to have to play better than, we did last week against Southern Mississippi to have a chance." The big question concerning the Gators is whether the offensive line, a veteran group, can protect its quarterback? It didn't against Miami as Bell was sacked six times for 56 yards in losses. I All-America tackle Jeff Zimmerman was beaten twice for sacks by the Hurricanes' Danny Stubbs, who was named the Southeast's defensive player of the week, i -1 Zimmerman has refused to talk to the media this week and says he won't until he has something to say. "We've taken some heat for losing the Miami game," said center Frank McCarthy. "The whole offensive line, and Jeff in particular, sees, the Alabama $239900 HHP (36" Cut) Put il HP with a 36" cutter deck and you'll see how, these hefty Ransomes will breeze through 1 1 1 SAVtMILUU' acres in an 8-hour day.

The change is not expected to detract from the heat of the rivalry. Though the schools are in different conferences, the aura surrounding their game rivals Georgia-Florida.

"Because of the proximity of the schools and because they both have good programs and share a lot in common, like great pride, the rivalry has grown," said Dooley. "The winning and losing has gone back and forth and that has added to it." But not lately. The Bulldogs have not lost to Clemson home or away in the past four years, winning three times and tying once. Clemson coach Danny Ford is 0-3 in Athens. Since Dooley came to Georgia in 1964, the Bulldogs have won 10 of 11 in Athens, The last time Clemson won was in 1981, when the Tigers also won the national title.

"This is generally the most physical game on our schedule," said Georgia rover John Little. "It always seems to come down to the last play in the game. If one key mistake is made by a team, it usually happens in the fourth quarter." Since 1977, the year of Clem-son's lone road victory in the Dooley era, the game generally has been decided by a great individual performance or by turnovers. Last year, Little's acrobatic interception in the end zone and Pete Anderson's fumble recovery for a touchdown brought Georgia back from a 10-3 deficit. The year before, Kevin Butler kicked a 60-yard field goal with 11 seconds to play.

I The Bulldogs opened last week by defeating Duke despite committing four turnovers to the Blue Devils' three. Clemson opened by losing two fumbles and the game to mistake-free Virginia Tech. That loss, as well as the annual animosity the Georgia-Clemson game produces, is why Dooley expects nothing less than a close battle. "Clemson has a great passion for Georgia," he said. "There's no doubt in my mind that they were looking to get past Virginia Tech while looking ahead at Georgia.

And not just to the University of Georgia, but to the state of Georgia, be-, cause they have not beaten Georgia or Georgia Tech in the last four games. "So all spring and all preseason they had Georgia on their minds." And now Dooley hopes they have too many Bulldogs on their hands. 378, 49, 57, 60, 63, 64, 65, 661. 67, 581, 586, 629, 650. 651, 681, 686, 649, 657, 439, 459, 469, 639, 659, 645, 669 WE'VE GOT EMI PD29.44 0G 1 3 ,4" or 6" BLUE or NICKEL RETAIL 409.00 4 1Q93 inn 1 Jl.

"It's Incredible to think a team could lose Barry Word and Howard Petty and end up with better tailbacks, but they've done it They're better, they're faster, they're huge," said Curry, alluding to Warren and running mate Kevin Morgan, another sophomore. Warren weighs 220 pounds, Morgan 225. Virginia also has an experienced option quarterback, senior Don Majkowski. He has completed 32 of 57 passes this season, including a 70-yarder for a touchdown to sophomore wide receiver John Ford, who sat out last season with knee injury.

1 Tech, meanwhile, didn't get anything resembling a big play against Furman in the debut cf junior quarterback Rick Strom, who was playing his first full game after a four-season layoff. He missed his senior year of high school with a broken leg, seldom played his first two years at Tech while backing up John Dewberry and was redshirted last season. i "Under the circumstances, I thought he played very well," said Curry of Strom, who completed 10 of 22 passes for, 81 yards. "When we had field position, he threw very well." Vi, Against Furman, the Jackets. had poor field position much of the day and couldn't run effectively enough to break out of it.

The Jackets' starting, front eight only one senior (tackle Kyle Ambrose) and one Junior (end Paul Jurgensen). The rest are sophomores or redshirt freshmen, with only second-year linebacker Mark White having significant game experience. "We had high expectations, and starting out like that (giving up 10 fourth-quarter points to Furman) didn't help," said White, referring to the 17-7 lead that Tech lost in the fourth quartet "In a sense, it made us mad.

We haven't proved anything. We have to come out against Virginia and prove we're a good defense." 5 Against Virginia, which opened the season by shocking South Carolina 30-20 at home and then lost 20-10 to Navy On the road, the Jackets' main concern will be stopping the big play. Most of the focus will be on sophomore tailback Chris Warren, a starter at cornerback last season.
