Flags on the University of Alabama campus flew at half-mast Sunday as the buses full of Crimson Tide football players pulled out of Paul Bryant Hall and headed for Birmingham for a flight to New York for Wednesday's Kickoff Classic against State. As the motorcade escort of state troopers passed, two elderly ladies waved crimson and white signs that read "Roll Tide." But the enthusiasm of that slogan seemed to dim in the pallor of the death of defensive tackle Willie Ryles less than 24 hours before. Ryles, a 19-year-old sophomore from Phenlx City, died from a cerebral blood clot sustained in preseason practice. A somber aura had pervaded the Alabama football team since Ryles suffered the head injury in a routine drill last Monday. "It's been quiet all week around here," said a mail room attendant in Bryant Hall.

Ryles occupied room 207 in the athletic dormitory named for the late Bear Bryant He lived with Vantriese Davis, also a sophomore from Phenix City. Before their 1:15 p.m. departure, i ilayers casually milled about the obby and commons room. After the news of Ryles' death reached them Saturday, several team members pledged that the Kickoff Classic would be dedicated to Ryles, who was to have started in the game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. They did not speak to the media Sunday, but kept to themselves and the relatives and.

close friends that had come to see them off. Several glanced at a headline obituary for Ryles in a local newspaper. Earlier in the morning, the team attended a service at Calvary Baptist Church, across from Bryant-Denny Stadium. Tradition of 28 years dictated this to be "Squad Sunday," honoring the Crimson Tide players. A memorial service for Ryles is scheduled for Friday when the team returns, but he was not ignored in Sunday's service.

"We pray today especially for the football team and the family of Willie Ryles," said Rev. Jack Shannon, the associate pastor. "We're in the company of hurting people and we need You to minister to us today. We need You to remind us that Your life is 'more powerful than our death." The pastor, Dr. Timothy Owings, addressed the team before thelbene-diction.

"We're going to be watching Wednesday night and praying that the Lord will bless this trip, that He'll give you strength amid your grief," he said. Funeral arrangements were incomplete, according to a spokesman for Progressive Funeral Home in Columbus, about a mile from Phenix City. Ryles continued on life-support machines Saturday night until his usable organs could be removed for donation, at the request of his family. pected to miss a few days. After the photo day function, Tech had a two-hour practice.

"Marion thinks the defense took a slight step backwards In terms of execution on the things they worked in camp early. They will get back to the basics." The basics would involve technique and tackling.

Wayne Radloff graded at center in his start against the Browns. Jeff Van Note also grad-'ed well while Joe Pellegrini injured his elbow. The team won't know how serious the injury to Pellegrini's elbow is until be is examined again Monday. The Falcons will practice just once Monday at 1:45 p.m. Chris Mortensen 74 ATHENS Georgia opens full-squad practice Monday with the smallest squad in numbers head coach Vince Dooley can remember.

"We'll have about 83 on scholarship and that's 10 off from what we normally have," said Dooley. "If you figure Clippers reportedly courting Levingston 0 4 (in general) of that 10 two might have been great players and two more might have contributed, you can see that it will affect us." Georgia's running backs weren't pleased with a new electronic timing device used in the 40-yard dashes. Tailbacks Lars Tate and Tim Worley both were timed in over 4.6 seconds. On hand-timing, though, they were under 4.4. Delays with new furniture are holding back the team's move into renovated McWhorter Hall, The team is headquartered in another dorm for the next few days.

Thomas OToole The Los Angeles Clippers reportedly have held preliminary talks with free agent forward Cliff Levingston and are weighing an offer in the $300,000 to $350,000 range for the Hawks veteran. Levingston, who finished a $200,000 contract WW in May, was underpaid by NBA standards, league reserve forwards aver aging about $500,000 and the Hawks remain committed to retaining him.
