1NT0WN EXTRA, December 27, 1979 PBA Reaches For Community Leaders to develop a cable system for Atlanta, might present a threat to Channel 30. "Cable Atlanta will enhance 30 rather than threaten it," he said. "We are currently working in liaison with them." The station is suggesting ideas and programming to the business, and reportedly will use some of the educational channels of Cable Atlanta as a means of broadcasting the programs they may have neither the facilities, time, nor money to show. "I've noticed that after 20 years in public broadcasting there is a tremendous difference in the number of people who come up to me and say 'that (30) is my favorite he said. He added he has found that an increasing number of Atlantans know "as much or more as I do" about the stations' programming.

Ware, a very relaxed man, related no fear that the advent of programming from Cable Atlanta, the Canadian-based company which recently won the rights Arbor Supporters Raise Thousands By DONNA WILLIAMS, Rtpwltff krtowR EXTRA State Rep. David Scott, Georgia Tech president Dr. Joseph Pettit, and Dr. Franklin Garret of the Atlanta Historical Society have been selected as three of the more than 40 people who will serve on WETV and WABE's Public Broadcasting Association (PBA). Robert Ware, general manager of the two stations and executive vice-president of the PBA, is happy about the progress of the group which he says is "going great" "We needed some sort of organization that would provide that kind of (community) leadership in order to help the stations in their community role," he said.

The PBA is actually a continuation of the Public Broadcasting Council, a similar group associated with the station which was never incorporated. As a result, Ware said, their actions had no legal function. The PBA, however, can play an active role in the stations. The new organization's charter has a specific list of responsibilities which include the following directives: To develop additional financial resources for WETV and WABE, and to hold, invest, and reinvest these funds for the purpose of strengthening the stations. To increase public awareness and understanding of the unique roles of the stations.

To provide programming advice and counsel to station staff and to the licensee (Atlanta Board of Education). To establish a viable mechanism for increased, meaningful participation in public broadcasting. To help provide significant, relevant local input into the development of national public broadcasting policy. The Association has also developed committee assignments which are: De- velopmentPublic Affairs, ProgrammingLong Range Planning, and Government Relations liaisonNational Regional Policies. Ware, who has been with the stations since April of this year, said he has enjoyed the "professional respect" shared between members of the school board, the stations and the PBA.

"There is a fantastic relationship between us and a tremendous cooperative spirit," said Ware. He hopes the PBA will help improve the public image of the educational stations. WETVWABE recently intensified their efforts to change the negative images and unawareness many people have of educational broadcasting. Earlier this year, the stations initiated their "Think 30" campaign. "PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) discovered that people don't think to look at educational television," Ware said.

So the station went around town with questionnaires, put up billboards and posters, and pasted signs with their slogan on waste receptacles. The result? Ware believes they made an impact on the public. The staff and friends of a little school doing big things on Roswell Road recently raised close to $6,000 to support the school's academic and scholarship programs. Over 200 people gathered in the community room of the Colony Square Hotel recently for Arbor Academy's second annual "Champagne Auction." Dinners for two, escape weekends at local hotels, maid service, singing telegrams, beauty packages, rare books and coins, autographed footballs and hockey pucks, art objects, and even a gray commode were up for sale. The new owner of an Alfa Romeo Spyder saved about $4,000 on her purchase, and works of art by Arbor Academy's students were a big hit at about $35 apiece.

The event was a model of charity since everything from the champagne, to auctioneer David Arwood's services, to the Alfa Romeo Spyder convertible from Alfa South was donated free of charge to help the gift-supported school for the educable handicapped. Functioning as an alternative to the programs for handicapped students in public schools, Arbor Academy has been providing a unique type of special education to the metropolitan Atlanta area for over 10 years.
