The "Alba Heywood Musical Comedy Co." will appear at O. O. F. Hall to night and to ntorrow night. The entertainment consists of music and impersonations, comic and otherwise.

They are highly recommended by the press and leading citizens where they have stopped, and from all appearance they are first class people; they have many press comments similar to the following: AraiJRX, Oct. 30, 1887. The Alba Heywood troupe gave two fine entertainments at Eureka Opera House, Friday and Saturday evenings, to fair business. Both were fine enter tainments, and the troupe will always be popular here. Mr.

Heywood is a brilliant success in everything he undertakes, and his company is an unusually strong one. Everything is new and rare, and they were tumultuously cheered both evenings. John Staats had asingular experience with natural gas one night recently. He closed the "damper" or draft on going to bed, in order to secure more heat, and the fumes of the burned gas could not all escape through the pipe and filled his room. The gas which results from burn id gas is poison to the lungs and will prostrate a person if enough is taken.

Staats was almost prostrated when he awoke, and after correcting the troublu with his stove he fainted and fell, but soon recovered. His wife and children were similarly effected. This. a new experience with gas here, and perhaps the first case of the kind which has become generally known, from anywhere in the "gas belt." So let all be careful that your stove pipes and dampers will allow sufficient draft to let the or burned gas all escape. Mr.

Staats and family were all sick two days, caused by this new gas experience. Telegram: James T. Nicholson, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Clay township, who by twenty years' service as a Justice of the Peace lias become best known as 'Squire concluded a couple of years ago that he hail done his part and would take the shade the remainder of his days, to the end that they might be his happiest Accordingly he resigned his office and repioved from his farm, a mile and a half wfcsi ot Washington, town aim lor a time appeared contented. But there was something wanting, namely, the coiiipan ionship of a good wife. Boston, this county, is to have creamery, similar to tne one Hagerstown had. The Item says: Notwithstanding the bad luck which has attended cream eries in this county Hagerstown and Richmond, for instance Boston has taken hold of it and will inside of ninety davs have a creamery in full blast. 1 he company completed its organiza tion last evening and consists of Wm. Here is a specimen of sensational domestic affairs, which frequently occur, in a similar manner, in uicnmond, as published in their papers. Should similar affair happen in Hagerstown the Richmond papers would give it two columns with sensational head lines and open tneir eyes in astonishment at our wicked little city: "There was an unfortunate affair in an up stairs room on Main street, between 8th and 11th streets, last Saturday night. A weu known business man wrote letter to anoiner wen known citizen wife asking her to meet him, at this room for a little private consultation on said night. By some untold means the hus band of the woman saw the letter before it reached her hands, quietly read it and then sent it on its way and said nothin about the matter. They met The room was too warm and they disrobed.

By and by they fell to sleep, and the husband slipped in, took both their cloth ing and fled. In the gentleman's pockets was $25 in cash, a valuable gold watch, an account dook. and some other trinkets There was consternation and trouble when they awoke. The business man slipped out, in the chilly dark of the early morning wrapped in a quilt, The husband who took the plunder, also took cars Saturday night. Item: Scott Hiser is a teacher of the village school at Washington, this county.

A very unruly school it is, but Mr. tnser has got a reputation as an in structor who will be the "boss of the ranch," and so year after year he is se lected to teach the Washington school, Last fall a year ago he found it necessary to flog a boy nainod and he performed the job in a thorough and 1 4 energetic, ijevmaqe suca an impression, or ratheA many impressions on the youth, tbitr'he was arrested for assault and battary. He was tried in circuit court and' paid a fine $20 and costs. This either tamed "ftis spirit nor disgusted nis patrons, ana he was a gain emplo4e4 to teach the Washington school this'winter. In fact, the county examine looked the matter np and rather thouhthat Hiser had not erred great ly in whipping the Windsor boy like he would abalkly mule.

This winter his school prosrressed very well until since' the holidays. But Mortie Cates, sort of Eli Cates, concluded that as Hiser had been fined for whipping a pupil he would not dare to do so again. He boasted of this to his companions and began to do to suit his own ideas. Now the boy that thinks Hiser isn't a whip per from away back, one that fines won't break of his habit, gets left. Mortie Ca'tes did, and got the awfullest kind of ajicking in the bargain.

The teacher got a tough water beech limb and mortified Mortie's fiesh until he looked as gay as that hand painted piece of sewer pipe in Dr. Taylor's office. The Cates' had Hiser arrested and taken before a Washington justice for trial on Wednesday, but Prosecutor Jackson had the proceedings nollied in order to file an information against Hiser in the circuit court Found in a Straw Stack. Montpelier. Isd, January 12.

A two year old heifer, owned by Samuel Jones, was lost one month ago. It was found a few days since in a straw stack on his farm, six miles north of here. It had lain there twenty three days with out water or food, except such as the straw in the straw prison afforded. The animal was emaciated when found, but is recovering from its enforced fast rapid STAY AT HOME. Is the Warning Cry from California More Men Than There is Work.

Telegram. Frank Geier, who went to California few weeks azo. has written to Officer Henry Westenberg and tho letter is a warning to tne people wno want to go to that country. Frank is at Los Angeles and writes that the city is overrun wi people, a great many of whom can get no work and are almost destitute. There are a dozen men, too, for every job of work.

Wages are not as good as they are in Richmond, and prices for every article of traffic much higher. Frank Wiggins told him that a large party of Richmond people are talking of coming out there to locate, this summer, and Frank warns them to stay at home unless they brin lots of money along. He pre dicts that in less than a year nearly every one who went to California, will be back in Richmond if it is possible for them to get back. arARTIX DALE'S CREEK. William B.

The gas well is progressing nicely now They went down nearly four hundred feet beforo striking rock. This is the deepest yet found in the county There has been considerable gossip of a sensatnnal character this neighbor hood for sometime past. How it will all end no one can tell, but the people would not be surprised to hear at any time of some one getting killed or crippled, ONLY OXE ESCAPED. Eight Head Chopped Off by a Swede With a Broad Ax.

St. Paul, Misn January 14. A dis patch from Princeton, says that Swede living some twenty miles from there is said to have killed his wife and seven children, chopping their heads off with a broad ax. A boy of fourteen jumped from an upstairs window and escaped. When asked by a neignoor what he had done, the murderer replied "What I have intended to do for a ton time." Springfield, Mo January 15. It is thought that a jury will be secured to morrow for the second trial of Cora E. Lee. The defendant, who is the foster daughter of Mrs. Emma Mulloy, noted in many States as an evangelist and temperance lecturer, is under indictment for murder in the hrst degree, on the charge shooting Sarah Graham to death, near this city, over two years ago.

In the first sensational trial of the case, last May, the jury disagreed, eight being for murder in the first degree and four for acquittal. The indications are that the trial will last not less than twe weeks. nd several new sensational features be developed. The Stcrl Gnn Successfully Cast. Pittsburg, Jan.

16. The great steel gun, weighing nine tons, which was cast solid at the Pittsburg steel casting works last Wednesday, was taken from the mold to day and found to be perfect. Superintendent Hainsworth is delighted with the He considers that the question whether it is possible to cast steel guns solid has been practically settled by his experiment and looks for ward with but little apprehension to the terrific firing test that will be applied to the finished weapon. Among those who watched the lifting of the casting were Lients. Fletcher and Force of the United States navy.

An hour afterward these gentlemen, with Mr. Hainsworth and other members of the steel casting corn pan'', made a very close inspection of the gun and applied such superficial tests as were possible in its present stage. The results only confirmed the first verdict that the casting was an un equivocal success. About the middle of February it is expected that the tests of the tensile strength of the steel will be made. The gun will be bored and then shipped to Washington to be finish ed.
