A heat, live American Tolcano has just been discovered in Colorado. During one of its recent explosions several people wern killed, and ninny wounded. Tisf. ministors aro ohjecting to the eoinin? inauguration' ball. We do not believe that dancinjr is the most moral or healthful exercise or pleasure, and ih Jiigh not a Christian model bv con siderable, we do not believe that a ball is an appropriate accompaniment to the solemn inauguration of a Christian President.

But the minis ter will find it an uphill task to prevent the old and wicked boys and girls of Sodom, D. from going "On with the Dance." City life or society is corrupt iu a greater decree than unv other. Xlondar last the editor of the Ex ponent had the pleasure of accompany ing btate Senator Jonnson and Kepre sentatives Reynolds and Commons, at the invitation of Supt. Blake, on an in spection tour through the new state asvlum buildings near Richmond. The buildings are composed mostly of brick are nearly fire proof, and built separately similar to a small town, but tho houses are all connected by underground pas sages and water and heat supplied from one point of supply.

The fael is natural gas, but coal oil is used for lightin They were erected for the occupation of the insane people of onr state, an were built out of a fund intended for several similar asylums at other points, one of which is a home for feeble minded children, located at Fort Wayne; but the funds were exhausted before these buildings were completed, and the insti tation at Bichmond being nearer finished than the children's home at Fort Wayne, and the children's home being needed the worst, the asylum at Richmond was temporarily arranged for a home for feeble minded children, and now contains 236, who, wc believe from what we saw, are cared for as well as such work could b3 done. The washing 13 all done by machinery and the institution contains a shoe shop where all the shoes for the children are made by toe boys and sawing room where the clothing of all the children are made by tho girls, and the work is neatly done. They haye school roms and are graded similar, to our public schools, and are treated very kindly by ait who have charge of them from Supt. Blake down, and especially are their teachers very kind, and the educational work seems to bo progress ing beyond what might be expected, 1 hey have a very tidy dining room plenty of wholesome food, and very neat sleeping apartments and seem very comfortable and contented; audit wouli be a very entertaining hour to anyone to look through this institution, and after having.seen these poor children, no one with a Heart as big as a chestnut could object to a liberal appropriation, sum cient to give a comfortable home for all such children, of whom there are 1,800 now in our state, belonging mostly to people' whose income is insufficient to enable them to properly care for them, and thus instead of being im proved mentally, physically and morally, as the majority are who are placed in this asylum, they grow worse and become a greater burden to themselves and society, Sir: Blake, the. Supt was for a number of years in charge of the reform school for boys at Plainfield, and is certainly a very excellent man for the place, and bis assistants, and especially Miss Miller, who is a memberof the board of trustees.

all seem to understand well their work and to strengthen this belief one only need to question the children. The money set apart for the expense of this institution is based on the numbe of iumates, $10 per month for each child being allowed, and the entire expense. including salaries, most be paid out this $10 per child; and experience has shown that this id insufficient, and an in ereased aMowence to $15 per capita will be asked xf the legislature this winter, which 13 the amount appropriated in Ohio. And could every law maker our state visit this home, examine its irorksnlloik into the faces of those unfortunate and homeless little chil dren, there would be but few dissentin Toices. Talk about your winter resorts second ot January ana tne weather as pleasant as May.

The State Supt. of Education is strong in his recommendation of a com pulsory school law, compelling all chil dren over seven and under fourtee years of age to attend school. There large per cent of the children of our state who do not attend school and who should, in justice to themselves and others, be compelled to. But a largi per cant of those who refuse to go to school are tough characters and cause more trouble and damage to the school than they can ever repay and should be sent to the reform school, where special preparations have been made to deal with such dispositions. To this we feel sure all teachers wilt say amen.

On the evening of December 22d, at Stranghn Station, just west of Dublin. Elijah HaskettTayoung man who worked on a farm, and well respected, shot an tilled Miss Delilah Allison, who was al so much respected and doing housework for Mr. Colburn. Haskett shot himself also, and both died. Previous to th Miss Allison had refused to marry Hask ff'SUchcS, snuffs, powders, syringes, as tringents or any similar application, because they are all irritating, do" not thoroughly reach tho affected surfaces snd should be abandoned as worse than failures.

Gause. The Telegram says that it is said that Brooks's wife has ap plied for a divorce, in another connty, is going to marry another man and says the story about her intimacy with Dr. Gause is a fabrication invented for the occasion. Also, that Dr. Gause did not tell her of Brooks's intimacy with another woman; that she put a pillow down at a while lying there heard Brooks tell 01 Cook about it.

Mention tavis paper. marau.ro tlie 3La All the LATEST Novelties BO' and ctt, giving as her reason that she was too oung, and the evening the shooting oc cured she declined to go with him to a party because she had a sore throat. A man named Iturst killed himself few days before Christmas, a few miles south. A neighbor tella the Item that got lip about 2 o'clock in the morning and dressed himself, came down stairs nd got the shotgun, and went out into the smoke house withont his shoes on.

lis then put tho muzzle of the shotgun to his lett teinpio and pulled the trigger with his toe. The discharge from the gun was heavy one, and it carried away the top half of the skull, the brain going with it, so that the tipper, paft of the spinal column coold be i een in the part of the skull that was left. About two inches' of the scalp was fonnd adhering ightly to the rafters, and looked is if it had been placed there with a great deal of care. Dr. Thurston said last evening "I have lookpd at a good many gun shot wounds in my time, but I never saw as complete a job as that." Of course death was instantaneous.

Coroner Zini merman will return his verdict in accord ance with tho above facts. We learn that Mr. Hurst has been a very dissi pated man. Besides beinjr an excessive drinker, he was also an excessive smok er, and his suicidal mania can most cer tainly be attributed to his intemperance. At the next Republican nominating election the candidates will be numerous.

Tho Item says: "1 hough it is a year yet until the time for selecting candidates for county offices, a good many fellows who want to get there are already letting ho fact be understood. And from tho fact that all county offices will have to be filled there will be a good many can didates. There are a good many in sight and several dark horses champing at the bits. For county clerk Geo. Williams the present deputy, will probably be candidate.

We have also been told that Paul Leibhart, of MiltonAwill be a can didate for clerk; but we have no reliable information that such is the fact. For county auditor John Winslo7 will again be a candidate for the nomination. Ben Myricki at present deputy auditor will most likely be a candidate; 1' or record er the talk is and it is true, that W. P. Cook, deputy treasurer will be a candi date.

Deputy Recorder Nate Lamar will also be a candidate for the office, lie is also well knttwn, and like Mr Cook, would be a good man for the place, there are a great many luiiows wno wouia like to be sherilf, and who will try for the nomination. Deputy Sheriff Dick More is on the lists, and will try to get there, so will Deputy Sheriff John Iredell, and the talk is that Will Dormer will lay his claims to the ofhee before the people, and enter the contest for the prize. Col. John Hartley, of Uagerstown, will also be a candidate for the place, There will probably be others who will seek the the nomination, lor county treasurer Alfred McMeans the present incumbent, will be a candidate for re nomination. He will very likely be op posed by Richard Cheesinan, of Dalton township.

Mr. Cheesman is a popular man and would have a strong following here. He is regarded as an honest man and would make a strong race. For prosecuting Harry C. Starr, the present deputy will be a candidate.

ferry J. I rceman will also be a candi date. Mr. Freeman was for a while the law partner.of Hon. H.

TJ. Johnson, and like Mr. Starr has a large acquaintance. are also told that rank Kibbey.son of Judge Kibbey, will be a candidate for prosecutor but we are not advised of tha truth of it. 1 nomas R.

jessup, of Cambridge City, will also be a candidate, and we suspect that there are others, among whom we will mention Jack Strayer. For Judge of the Circuit Court, we have not heard the name of any one mentioned, except Judge Comstock." King R. Williams was overlooked in the above report. He made an encouraging race before and will be with the boys again in the coming race. Mr.

Cheesman states that the mention of his name as a candidate is a mistake, as he is not a candidate." Saturday night, December 22J, Mil ton Bainbridge, of Abington, shot and killed a young man named Hawkins. Hawkins boarded with Bainbridge, was intoxicated, and abused and beat Bain bridge's wife. The husband emptied a double barreled shotgun into his body, and then beat his head to a jelly. The murdered man was a cousin of the slay er. Abington is about hve miles distant from the scene of the Kibbey Ranck shooting affair and the Hurst suicide.

Jesse Townsend and James Dial, of Whitewater, went up to Winchester a few days ago, to buy some Texas ponies. 1 hey indulged pretty freely, and after getting full went to the Salvation army barracks. They went to the mourners' bench and one of them cried out "What's the matter with Jesus," and the other responded "He's all right' The Salvation army people then had them arrested for disturbing a religious meeting, and they paid a fine and cost of $7 each, and came home wondering Al salvation is really free. Item. Rev.

Dr. Bell. Editor of the Mid Con tinent, Kansas City, Mo says in its is sue of Oct. 1st, 1887: It is to be believed that Dr. Shallen bergcr, of Rochester, Pjl, bas a sure cure for Fever and Ague.

A gentleman in our suffered greatly from Malaria, and tried many remedies to no purpose: when seeing this antidote advertised, tried it, was immediately relieved, and finally cured. This was two years since, and he has no return of his trouble.
