TAfIA 51V0 JOHtSIOBO ifj. 1 ll liHSMl IIITT ssaislilT THE ARISTOCATS THE FORMULA APOCALYPSE NOW S1 11 A Review fV "Nine To Five," directed by Colin Hig-gins. Starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman. PG. Pbipps, South-lake, National Triple, South DeKalb.

By Eleanor Riagel Constitution SIH Wrilr How could anyone in bis or her right mind resist a movie starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton? Well whether this reviewer is always in her right mind is certainly debatable, but I sure couldn't resist "Nine To Five," a broad screwball farce about the uneasy coexistence of office politics and sexual politics. The premise is simple: behind every male mid-level executive sits an exploited female secretary who helped get htm where he is. Her reward? A chance to fetch his coffee. Given that the film is the brainchild of Miss Fonda, one would expect a biting social satire with the occasional savage jab at a corporate system that assumes prospective male employees have an eye on a vice presi-, dency and prospective female employees have an eye on eventually marrying a vice presi-dent For whatever reasons, this is not the case. The politics in "Nine to Five" are buried under a pile of sight gags, one-liners, slapstick and general merriment that sweetens its message considerably.

Though the film does develop something of a five o'clock shadow in its second half i.e., problems with pace and focus by that time its three leading ladies have created such a backlog of goodwill that it really doesn't matter. These three could've made me forgive "Used Cars." Fonda plays a brand-new divorcee entering the work force for the first time. Tomlin is a sort of boss secretary who watches with growing indignation as men to whom she's taught the ropes are promoted ahead of her. Parton is the personal secretary who spends most of her workday trying to convince her boss, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman), that her pad is where she takes notes, not where she invites him after-hours. One day when everything goes wrong, the trio retire to a local bar and with the help of some artificial stimulants, become bosom buddies, so to speak (sorry, Dolly).

Soon they're swapping fantasies about what they'd like to do to the heartless Hart The plot com-. li" 332151 fCACHTBEElWEOMONT CUNT EASTWOOD A CHANGE OF SEASONS Sir mm 3 RUTHGCMDON "ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN" THE FORMULA 2.H4.4SWS7.30-10,15 PRIVATE BENJAMIN STUNTMAN ,1 i kifflE 6886766 ommmteanatunal ALL SEATS $1.00 ALL TIMES Lily Tomlin: As 'Boss Secretary plications arise when their fantasies inadvertently start coming true. It's at this point that the movie's problems arise, too. "Nine To Five" is so much richer when it skewers the petty harassments that are the realities of office life. Once the pointed satire of the first part gives way to broad farce, the movie becomes less interesting.

However, the real reason to see "Nine to Five" isn't its sugar-coated social message, but the superb ensemble playing of the stars who have the timing and rapport of the Marx Sisters. I've rarely seen Fonda so generous in her scenes and it's especially refreshing to see the hard-edged politico playing a daffy (lame. Tomlin is brilliant with an energy and an eye for telling character detail that's unique. She has a certain dangerous unpredictability we never know how" shell say her next line. And as for Dolly, welL she's just about the most pleasant surprise to hit the movies since popcorn.

She's smart, sassy, Southern and just sensational And the camera loves her. Together, they are an unbeatable triple play and they save "Nine to Five" with their special magic that works overtime.
