"The Vietnam Funny Book (An Antidote to Insanity)" (Presidio Press; $6.95 paperback) is a small book of cartoons Foster drew in 1969 as he slogged through the jungles of South Vietnam and, later, while recovering from a gunshot wound in a Guam hospital. "Vietnam was a soured paradise, starved of calm and bludgeoned by dread," Foster recalls in his terse introduction. "It was an 'if it moves, shoot if land." The "fix" (as he puts it) that got him through the ordeal was pen and paper; cartoons "drawn from the cry deep in the throat." Thirteen years later, he shares them with us.

Foster, now 32, describes himself as a "writer, painter, poet, printmaker, joker, killer, lover, gambler, mean and sweet, dreamer and doer, and charged with a madman's drive." As for his cartoons, they are rather crudely drawn and most aren't very funny (maybe you had to be there; I wasn't). But if he hasn't necessarily advanced the cause of art or humor, he has still done us a service in the humanitarian realm. As an example, consider his parting shot (so to speak), a cartoon labeled "The Textbook Warrior and the A grunt, whistling coolly, is pictured dropping a grenade at the feet of his unaware whose eyes are dutifully glued to a pair of binoculars trained on some faraway horizon. In the blackest, bleakest sense, that was Vietnam. We need to remember it, and Foster's crude but heart-felt cartoons are potent souvenirs.

Still, I couldn't help being impressed at the unprovoked arrival of not one, but two new guides to mushrooms. Ah, the mushroom, that wide-brimmed hero of salad bars and cow fields! Fungi of a thousand faces, Garbo-mysterious, bunny-prolific, sometimes wholesome, sometimes deadly, and (should you stumble on the hallucinogenic variety) sometimes transcendental. Who could fail to be fascinated by this, the very epitome of profligate growth and multifarious personality? "The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms" (Alfred A. Knopf; $12.50 hardcover) contains nearly 1,000 pages (about 300 of which are in color) of mushroom minutiae, some 750 mushrooms in all "Simon and Schuster's Guide to Mushrooms" ($22.50) is more compact, with 512 pages and about 400 mushroom types. It is also a bit simpler to use, in that each color plate is integrated into the text as a single entry.
