Boastfulness is not Pat Dye's nature, but there is an unmistakable confidence about Auburn's defensive line as Monday night's Kickoff Classic game against Miami approaches. It doesn't seem to matter that middle guard Dowe Aughtman, tackles Donnie Humphrey and Doug' Smith and end Quency Williams players who made Auburn the second most difficult; team to run against in the Southeastern Conference a year ago are gone. They were the key to Auburn's yield of only 123 rushing yards per game while finishing 11-1 in 1983. The Tigers allowed six rushing touchdowns; Tennessee and Georgia were next with eight each. Yet the replacement corps thinks itself just as adequate.

"I've seen us playing against ourselves," Dye said Thursday, "but not in a pressure, situation. Still, if everything goes true to form, we'll be all right" Dye said 6-4, 248-pound junior Gerald Robinson has been Auburn's best defensive end for two years, and 6-3, 216-pound senior John Dai-ley on the other end is a returning starter. Both 6-3, 275-pound senior Ben Thomas and 6-3, 271-pound junior Gerald Williams have some starting experience at tackle (because of injuries to first-team players), and though 5-11, 234-pound junior Harold Hallman never has started, he has ample game experience. This season's line won't be as big as last year's average from tackle to tackle has dropped from 271 to 260 but it is stronger and considerably faster Finding quality reserves seems a bigger concern. "The way I figure it," said defensive line coach Wayne Hall, "it takes one third more intensity and energy to play on defense, so the offensive line will be stronger at the end and the other team will win in the fourth, quarter unless you've substituted to account for that one-third." Ends Kevin Green (6-3, 238, senior) and Gary Kelley (6-2, 216, red-shirt freshman) meet Hall's standards as backups, as do tackles Alex Dudcbock (6-3, 235, sophomore) and Nate Hill (6-5, 250, freshman).

Freshman end Aundray Bruce (6-5, 215 of Montgomery) has been impressive, but there is no suitable backup for Hallman at middle guard. Floyd had packed his car and headed home. After informing Dooley and offensive line coach Eddie Williamson of Floyd's departure, Kasay drove to Hartwell to find Floyd. Kasay found Floyd and his father at a local swimming pool and both men attempted to convince Floyd to return to Georgia.

They were unsuccessful. Along with phone calls from several Bulldogs coaches, Georgia has enlisted the aid of two of Floyd's high school coaches and a local minister to get Floyd to change his mind. Former Georgia teammate and roommate Warren Gray, now with the Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL, is also expected to call Floyd at some point. Despite those efforts Floyd says he doesn't plan to change his mind. "I would say my decision is pretty final," he said.

Floyd chdse not; to comment on his reasons for leaving Georgia and apparently giving up football. "The only thing I can say is that this is not the end of the universe," he said. "It was a personal decision and I made it." 19" Diagonal Color T.V. After a private chat with Dooley, Holton rejoined the team. Holton played in 10 games in the most among Georgia's freshman linemen. He was the NO. 1 right guard after the spring but Dooley moved him to the second team this summer in a disciplinary move. Dooley would not say why he, made the change.

"Everything has worked out all right," said Holton. "I'm back on the team and ready to play. thing's fine The same cannot be said for Floyd, who came to Georgia in 1982 after earning high school All-America honors at Hart County. Floyd was redshirted in his first year at Georgia due to an ankle injury. He played in four games at tackle last season and was listed as the No.

2 left tackle after spring practice. "Jay looked good after the spring but when he came back, he had actually lost some weight," said John Kasay, Georgia's strength and conditioning coach. "I don't think he had, been taking care of himself. I should have known something was wrong right there." Floyd left the team just before Georgia's first practice Monday morning; according to Kasay. "He didn't show up for the 8 clock meeting so I called the dorm," said Kasay.
