after he wrecked his bike ive Youths Win AMA Qualifying ive local youths have won in regional AMA Short track qualifying races at Turnersburg Speedway and Talladega Ala earning points which enable them to compete at the AMA National Short Track Championship race at Wichita Kan Aug 19 20 Gene Church Roger Church Allen Barker Ricky DeRhodes and rank Moore are all eligible to enter the competition in Wichita next month Gene Church 15 of Turnersburg won first place at Talladega two weeks ago in the 201 250 cc class and also first place at Turnersburg last Saturday in the same class His brother Roger 16 won first place in the open class at Tur nersburg and third place in the 250 class and at Talladega won third place in the open class The two are sons of Mr and Mrs Bill Church of Turnersburg who own and operate Turnersburg Speedway Roger and Gene both attend North Iredell High School and both started racing when they were about eight years old Ricky DeRhodes 17 has been our Tilts Are Played our games were played last night to complete the season in the Church Civic and Industrial softball leagues In the Church Civic League irst Baptist Garfield edged Boulevard Methodist II by 13 11 while Western Avenue Baptist pinned an 18 9 set back on Rose Chapel Methodist Paul Williams and Zest Everett had three hits each for the Baptists while five players paired hits for Boulevard Billy Sells Jerry Hinson and Billy Harris each rammed three hits for Western Avenue while Scott Houston and Rex Bell each had three safeties for Rose Chapel Burnett nipped Draymore 6 5 and Draymore turned around and edged Uniwood in a slugfest 25 24 Burnett had five players with two hits each in its win Draymore was sparked to its big win by Gary Lipe with five hits while Roger Martin and Mark Henderson each had four Pass Blasts Grand Slam Doug Pass had two home runs one of them a grand slam in leading the White Sox to a 7 4 victory over the Braves in the Rinky Dink League Thursday Pass blasted his grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to gain the victory for pitcher Michael McKinney who gave up homers to David Ross and Johnny Jolly In the other game the Tigers mauled the Cardinals 16 0 as Robbie Keaton worked a one hit job allowing a safety to Billy Jones Wesley Tomlin had two hits for thewinners racing for two years and placed fourth in the 125 cc class at both Talladega and Turnersburg and sixth in the 250 class at Turnersburg He is the son of Mr and Mrs Eddie White of route 5 Statesville and is a senior at North Iredell High School Allen Barker won second place on the open class at Talladega and fourth in the same class at Tur nersburg He is a ninth grade student at North Iredell High School and has been racing for two years rank Moore son of Mrs Betty Moore of route 5 Statesville has been racing only one year but won the fifth place in the 175 class and seventh place in the 250 class at Turnersburg He is a sophomore at North Iredell High School All are now eligible to enter competition at Wichita which will include top riders from across the country The top five riders from each region are selected through heat races and semifinals for the grand competition Bill Church owner of Turnersburg Speedway said that there were a lot of other winners last week at the qualifying race but only four from the immediate area This region includes the Carolinas Georgia Alabama lorida and a portion of Tennessee The race at Turnersburg last week was AMA sanctioned and Bob Black of Charlotte was the AMA referee Gene Church rides a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and his brother rides a Honda DeRhodes rides a Honda also while Barker and Moore both ride Yamahas Tourneys Reported Robert McCrary was the winner in the hole in one tournament held recently at the Newtowne Miniature Golf Putting Tournament McCrary had 15 aces for 54 holes Charles Sparks and Dennis Waugh tied for second place with 13 aces and Waugh won the runner up spot in a playoff In the two man team tournament on Thursday a total of 13 teams were in competition in match play single elimination tournament In the final match Tony and David Harwell captured the title over Robert McCrary and Larry Lowe by 4 3 The next tournament is planned for Thursday July 28 which is the third qualifying round for the fifth annual Tournament of Champions To Test Arm DETROIT (AP)
