Fact is, Lee Shepherd looked as if he were going to apologize for it He has delicate blond hair and pale blue eyes, and he nearly speaks in whispers. When someone pointed out that he had never lost at Atlanta Dragway, Shepherd sort of shuffled and lowered the bill of his cap and said, "Probably a coincidence." As much of a coincidence as him winning 20 national events in the 1980s, of him being in 30 of the last 36 national finals, of him being the two-time defending Pro Stock World Champion.

Sunday afternoon, Shepherd won his third consecutive Southern Nationals championship when Joe LePone of Malvern, redlighted. "We were lucky," said Shepherd. "If Joe hadn't've done that, we would have Don't let his rhetoric of coincidences and luck fool you, for Shepherd has been dominating the Pro Stocks since 1980. Last season he outclassed everyone else in the field, clinching the world championship with still three races remaining. This season, Shepherd has now won two straight National Hot Rod Association events since a second-round defeat at the Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.

Meanwhile, Frank Hawley (5.99 elapsed time and average speed of 240.64 mph) beat Al Segrini (6.07 and 214.28) for the Funny Cars title, while Gary Beck 5.53 and 249) edged Richard Tharp (5.70 and 245.23) in Top Fuel. Moving out of the right-hand lane in the final, Shepherd said he had problems with the track. "About midway down the track (on the right side)," Shepherd said, "there's a bump and a dip. I hit it and sort of swerved to the center. Once you get a car out of shape that's going that fast, it's difficult to get it back on the track.

"There's no question," he said, "that we would have lost if Joe hadn't've redlighted." Earlier in the day, Shepherd had beaten Bubba Cor-zine in the first round, then Warren Johnson in the semis. With LePone's false start, he coasted to a 9.21 elapsed time at 105.75 mph in the final. Beck, after going 17 months between victories, picked up his second straight Sunday. Beck, who recorded the quickest e.t. in the sport's history 5.42 seconds in a first-round win over his car owner, Larry Minor, has now won 13 times on the NHRA circuit.

For Hawley, who has made 10 straight elimination runs in the 5.9 range, it was his third straight win of the year. Sunday was also the fourth time that Segrini and Hawley had met in a national events final, with Hawley winning each time. Hawley, in fact, has won six out of 13 NHRA events in just over two years of racing. Johncock is Dixie 200 champion Order of finish, Page 2-D By Thomas M. Stinson StM Writer HAMPTON Gordon Johncock took final ownership of a quirky lead that no one else could handle with 24 laps to go Sunday afternoon and then proceeded without incident to win the Dixie Kraco 200 by a healthy one-lap margin at Atlanta International Raceway.

In the first event in the PPG Indy Car World Series season, Johncock, racing a STP Wildcat IX Cosworth, was one of four drivers who took turns burning the field in the early going. But after pole-sitter Rick Mean, Johnny Rutherford and Mike Mos-ley all either dropped from the race or out of contention in separate pitting incidents, Johncock picked his way through the confusion to win the 25th Indy Car event of his 19-year career. The average winning speed with a plodding 146.133 miles per hour, which is not bad considering that Johncock did a complete 180-degree spin while trying to make a pit stop midway through the race. But the slow pace had nothing to do with the new CART aerodynamic design regulations there were installed solely to reduce speeds. Because of an early accident involving Bobby Rahal and Derek Daly no one was hurt and Johncock's pit spin, 25 laps of the race were run under the yellow flag.

Besides, competing teams were almost as interested in mastering the new rules in preparation for the Indianapolis 500, still seven weeks away. Johncock's margin of victory was an easy 32 seconds just over one lap over Al Unser Sr. Perhaps the most surprising ride of the day came from Atlan-tan John Paul who in his initiation to Indy Car racing ran a strong third. Early, it looked like another Mears runaway, but from the 52nd lap when Mears first surrendered the lead to Rutherford on a pit stop until the 109th lap, when Johncock finally seized control, it was a race of attrition. Rutherford was running strong in his Wildcat VIII Cosworth and was a breezing 1.93 4 leader until the 60th lap, when he pitted, overshot his pit by four stalls and had to Je pushed back 80 feet for servicing.

The engine was smoking when the crew finally started to work and it was quickly discovered the car had burned a cylinder and he withdrew. That left the lead for the first time to Johncock, but his spin in the pits in lap 71 dropped him out of the lead, allowing Mears back in. During the spin, Johncock lost first geir and he had to run the rest of the race without it Next, it was Mears' turn to lose it in the pits. With the yellow flag out after Johncock's spin, Mears pitted in the 79th lap and could not get started again. The crew found the spark box melted; it had to be replaced and he fell off the pace by eight laps.

Finally, Mosley found he held the lead and defended against a charging Johncock and Unser until the 108th lap, when he stopped for fuel. But after his engine was killed during the stop, the car was stuck in first gear and his crew could not unjam the transmission. Johncock then took the lead for the duration. Prost claims French Grand Prix France's Alain Prost, driving a Renault turbo, won the French Grand Prix at Le Castellet despite critical mistakes in the season's first major battle of pit stops. Prost led for all but three of the 54 laps on the French Riviera track, with former world champion Nelson Piquet of Brazil taking second in his Brabham BMW turbo and moving into the lead in this year's title race after three of 16 scheduled events. American Eddie Cheever scored his best result ever, placing third in the other Renault turbo. Kimball dives past Louganis for title Brace Kimball, continuing a remarkable comeback after a near-fatal automobile accident, turned in almost flawless performances on his final three dives, passing world champion Greg Louganis to capture the U.S. Diving indoor 10-meter platform national championship in Indianapolis.

The women's world champion, Wendy Wyland, earned her third straight national title, taking first place from Becky Binney on the final dive. The Wonder wins at Santa Anita The Wonder, a major disappointment in the Santa Anita Handicap with a 13th-place finish, closed with a rush to win the $107,500 San Bernardino Handicap by three-quarters of a length over Konewah at Santa Anita. Domynsky in Woodlawn Stakes Dogwood Farm president Cot Campbell has announced that his 3-year-old turf specialist Domynsky will be shipped to Baltimore to prepare for $50,000 added Woodlawn Stakes at Pimlico on May 7. A chestnut son of former Dogwood star Dominion, Domynsky has won 6 of 13 starts with 5 seconds in his young career and has never finished worse than second in a turf race. By Bill Bryant Special lo The Constitution Clemson won six of its nine matches Sunday in the final round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tennis championships and squeezed out a satisfying win over defending champion Duke for the conference title. "This was a long-awaited championship," Clemson coach Chuck Kriese said after the Tigers' No. 1 doubles team of Richard Akel and Gregg Cooper had assured the tournament win with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 decision over Duke's Mike Smith and Chaim Arlosorov. "We hurt pretty bad this summer.

I've never had something so painful." The reason for Kriese's and Clemson's discomfort was the ACC championship that Duke took away from the Tigers last year for the first time in four seasons. And going into the final round of this year's three-day tournament at the Peachtree World of Tennis seven points behind Gem-son, Duke certainly had plans to make it another painful summer for the Tigers. Clemson won singles championships at Nos. 3, 4 and 6. Jean Desdunes defeated Duke's Mike Smith 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No.

3, Andy Krantz defeated Duke's Will White 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 at No. 4 and Richard Matus-zewski downed North Carolina's Eddie Stewart 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Duke did claim the tournament's No. 1 singles titlist.

Mark Flur, regaining control after a shaky start in the second set, routed Wake Forest's Laird Dunlop 6-1, 6- 3. Dunlop had mounted a comeback challenge by winning the first two games of the second set before Flur broke Dunlop's serve in the sixth game and put him away with a series of precise passing shots and volleys. In the four matches two singles and two doubles where the Blue Devils were paired against Clemson, Duke was able to pick up only one win and just two points. Clemson, which brought 53 points (based on regular season play) into the tournament, picked up an additional 75 for a 128 total, seven points in front of Duke's 121 for the overall championship and two points (75 to 73) ahead of the Blue Devils for the tournament title. North Carolina, which came into the tournament tied with Duke for second place in the regular-season standings (48 points), added only two wins Sunday and finished a distant third with 104 points.

Maryland (84), Virginia (71), Wake Forest (58), N.C. State (32), and Georgia Tech (5) completed the eight-team field. Georgia Tech, which had failed to win a single match in the first two rounds, won two matches in the consolation round Sunday. Chuck Hyder, a senior from Stone Mountain, defeated N.C. State's Tony Baker 6-2, 6-3 in the No.
