Southlake Plaza. Promenade. Perimeter. A review By Eleanor Ringel Staff WriWr Like the recent "Monsignor," "The Missionary" gets its laughs from men of the cloth. Only this movie means to be funny.

And is. This is a gently civilized British comedy with just a twinge of Monty Python madness (Python member Michael Palin wrote the script and plays the title role). Our hero is the Rev. Charles Fortescue (Palin), who returns to London in 1906 after 10 years in Africa, where he taught the natives all about Jesus and the glorious British Empire (probably not in that order). Waiting for him is his childhood sweetheart, Deborah (Phoebe Nicholls), a somewhat askew coquette to whom he has been affianced for a decade.

They've kept the flame of love alive through the mails 663 letters and 113 postcards, sighs Phoebe, who has filed away every note in a system so hopelessly complicated that her true calling is clearly government service, not marriage. But it's marriage she wants, and she can't wait until she and Charles settle down in some adorable vicarage in one of England's greener corners. "Fallen women?" muses Phoebe. "You mean, women who have hurt their knees?" Money for the project is provided by the graciously randy Lady Ames (Maggie Smith), who shares one of England's statelier homes with her fascist husband, Lord Ames (Trevor Howard, -playing a less lethal version of the role he did in "The Charge of the Light and their befuddled butler, Slatterthw-aite (Michael Hordern), who tends to end up in the pantry when he heads for the drawing room. The mission proves to be a great success, mostly because the fallen woman are falling for Fortescue, who soon has his hands full (to say nothing of his bed) of not-quite-reformed doxies. This does not sit well with the'smitten Lady Ames, who begins plotting murder.

Like Slatterthwaite, "The Missionary" sometimes loses track of where it's going, but overall it's a deft and refreshingly daft comedy whose deadpan restraint is most welcome after a summer of "Airplane!" clones and high-grossing gross-outs like "Porky's." Director Richard Loncraine doesn't rush things and he lets his capable, classy cast take care of all the finer points (which they do magnificently, whether it's Howard complaining about "equine spume" ruining a uniform or Hordern making a cadenza out of clearing his throat). "The Missionary" is a terribly English comedy for grown-ups whose idea of a good laugh doesn't mean a bare bottom wiggled in their face. CTR A review By Eleanor Ringel Staff Writer You get an idea of just how low some horror movies will go when you see a scene like the one in "The Incubus" in which a teenage girl is dragged screaming from a bathroom stall and brutally raped and murdered in the restroom of a small-town movie theater. Moral: Go to the rest-room before you see the movie. Advice: Go to another moviet "The Incubus" is a disturbingly nasty film, not so poorly done that you can completely shrug it off, yet not done well enough to make its uglier shock scenes worth enduring. It's the sort of picture in which John Cassavetes, playing the town doctor, gets to say "ruptured uterus" not once but several times. There's more than ruptured uteri to worry about in the formerly tranquil village of Galen, Someone or something a rapemurder rampage.

Voung Tim Galen, grandson of the town matriach, Agatha Galen (who likes to remind folks, "the Galens have always been witch has had the same nightmare before every attack. Naturally, he thinks he may be to blame. But what about mysterious newcomer Laura Kincaid, a journalist who. tracks down stories in an off-the-shoulder black blouse? Or Dr. Cassavetes himself, who seems unnaturally close to his daughter and had some bad luck with a second wife a few years ago? An incubus, in case you're not up on your witchcraft, is an evil spirit who copulates with women while they sleep (men are visited by a succubus.

Knowing this, "The Incubus" doesn't make sense, but even if it did, the film suffers from as many red herrings as red-stained sheets covering corpses.
