STOOO I A By BUI Banks Stiff Wrltar CARROLLTON They have been pointing to this one for a year now. As the season melted away and West Georgia continued piling indignity upon hapless foes, eyes began shifting to the north. The attraction was Widener University of Chester, Pa, a team that handed West Georgia its first defeat in 23 years. The final was 10-3, coming in last year's Division III South Region championship at Grisham Stadium. After a year that begins to gnaw at you.

There is no denying, in fact, that each Sunday the paper was scanned thoroughly for a sliver of information. "Let's say that everybody has a keen interest in Widener," said West Georgia coach Bobby Pate. Sunday afternoon, the interest became officially mutual. The day before, West Georgia completed its second consecutive unbeaten regular season with a 45-13 victory over Maryville. Widener (9-1) kept its end of the bargain with a 24-7 conquest of Swarthmore.

The two teams will meet again at Grisham, with kickoff this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. "It should be a classic rematch," said Pate. "There's gonna be a nice re venge factor." There is no mystery why. In two years and 19 games, Widener. is the only blemish on an otherwise immaculate canvas.

West Georgia has not only won, but it has been merciless in execution. Swathing a 9-0 path in 1982, West Georgia scored an average of 42.1 points to its opponents 4,6. In most games, waves of fans depart by the third quarter, and the West Georgia first teams play only the first half. West Georgia has never been seriously tested over an entire game this season. Only once, against Randolph-Macon on Oct 23, was there any semblance of suspense.

West Georgia scored with 11 seconds left to take a 6-0 lead at halftime. But any doubts were erased in the second half when the Braves scored 28 points for 34-0 victory West Georgia's closest game until Maryville last Saturday. Because West Georgia may move up to Division II next season, Pate is putting a special empasis on a national championship this season. is a better team than last year's," he said. "It is bigger, stronger and faster.

I think we have a golden opportunity this year, that won't be available again if we pass it up." Running back Charles Lewis heeded that advice Saturday night, and as a result Constitution's Star Standout helped his Albany State football team break an 18-game losing streak, one of the two longest in the nation among Division II schools. Before Saturday night's 22-19 victory over Savannah State, the Rams had not won a game outright since they defeated Fort Valley State 21-12 in their 1980 finale.

After enduring much ridicule and embarrassment for what had happened to the team since then, Lewis got his head to- gether and helped Albany bring the downward slide to a halt. "I had been talking to this reverend I 'know because things just weren't going says Lewis, a junior from Cleve- land, Ohio. "My concentration was off, and lit seemed like all of us were just out there. He told me not to pray to the Lord for him to help us win, but pray for him to help us get through it I did, and I believed it helped." Obviously, it helped in a big way for a big running back. Lewis was given the ball times.

He responded by gaining 182 -yards and scoring two touchdowns for Albany State, which was credited with a victory over Morris Brown by way of for-; feit last season. "I wasn't used to carrying the ball that many times, but that was the kind of game I've prayed for," says Lewis.
