Harris Hines was elected to the new Superior Court judgeship in 1982 elections and took office in January 1983, bringing the number of Superior Court judges to five. Marietta lawyer Bob McDuff was elected in the new State Court judge's position, beating out Magis- trate Ray Gary who also ran as a Democrat for that seat In November, McDuff also defeated his Republican opposition, J. Don Jones, and became the county's third State Court judge.

Rep. Ken Nix left the Georgia Rouse of Representatives to run successfully for the Post 3 State Court judge position held by Hines. In the race for Cobb County Magistrate, Post 1, assistant district attorney Mary Staley, a Republican, -V defeated Marietta attorney John Hildebrand to become the county's first female magistrate. The Post 1 seat was held by Judge George Brid-well, who did not seek re-election. Democrat Chris Landise defeated justice of the peace T.O.

Sturdivant for Magistrate, Post 2. Cobb chief assistant district attorney Joe Cham--bers left Nov. 1 to become the executive director of -the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia. No new chief assistant was named, but the vacancy was filled by former Fulton County prosecutor Jack E. Mallard, who conducted the crucial cross-ex- amination of convicted killer Wayne Williams.
