By Scott Cain Staff Wrrtar SOME OF ATLANTA'S MOST ii troker Ace" is corny in such a cheerful way that it is almost impossible not to be entertained. This is the "Hee-Haw" of A role like Stroker Ace is the kind that only Reynolds can play.

As he frequently points out, Dustin Hoffman and Pacino can't do this good ol' boy stuff, and he's right The spectacle of Reynolds at a carnival, seated in a toy car which tips over each time a customer hits a target with a baseball is not to be missed. He's also wonderful in a giant chicken suit. Nabors' role is ideal for him, being an "aw-shucks" extravaganza. He actually gets to revive his patented way of saying, "Gollee." Miss Anderson is funny in a cartoonish role and Beatty has a grand time, chewing scenery at a furious pace. Parker Stevenson, as Reynolds' rival on the track, is handsome and enjoyable as a harmless villain.

Hal Needham's direction is minimal, as usual. The racing scenes are marred by the inclusion of footage from an automotive archive. You can always tell' when filler material, usually of a spectacular wreck, has been inserted. Most of "Stroker Ace" was filmed in Atlanta, but the geographical connection is not played up, except at Atlanta International Raceway. movies.

The three principal actors Burt Reynolds, Jim Nabors and Loni Anderson poke fun at their own images and this gives "Stroker Ace" a tiny measure of comic complexity. The movie is not entirely cardboard. Reynolds plays a conceited fellow who fancies himself a lady killer. Nabors plays a cornporie goof- ball who twists his mouth to the side of his face when he sings in a treacly baritone. Miss Anderson portrays the most squeaky-clean spinster since Doris Day.

The story is set in the noisy world of Deep South stock-car racing. Reynolds, as Stroker Ace, is a hell-raising driver constantly feuding with his sponsors. In a moment of haste, he signs with an obnoxious fried-chicken tycoon (Ned Beatty) without realizing that his contract requires him to take part in any nincompoop-ish promotion that Beatty cooks up. After a series of humiliating public appearances, Reynolds is desperate to get Beatty to cancel the contract. He hatches a plan, aided by Nabors, his mechanic and best buddy, and by Miss Anderson, Beatty's chaste public-relations assistant.
