Constitution says in black and white that a person is innocent until proven guilty." Coleman believes publishing Owens' ruling in the local newspaper may have caused a few Valdostans to change their opinion of Wilcox's guilt. "But I think that most people who had a concrete opinion didn't want anything to change that opinion and so they didn't read it," said Coleman. i The senior Wilcox also said that running the opinion in the newspaper may have "produced a few converts" but that some Valdostans will always think his son should have remained in prison. 1 "I just figure that there always will be people who are going to say something nasty," said Wilcox. "There's no use in trying to turn these people around." Coleman believes that with time, the resentment against Wilcox will subside.

"Time heals most wounds," said Coleman. "And I Nov. 24, 1980, when a logger unearthed it. Prosecutors contended Wilcox strangled Mrs. Hanks after she re-, sisted his sexual advances.

The Wilcox ruling frequently is compared by. residents here to the Hth Circuit decision last month overturning the convictions of three men in the slayings of six members of the Ned Alday family of Donal-sonville in 1973. "People here have a bad taste -in their mouths about the higher courts," said Charlie R. Spray, one; of the investigators in the Wilcox', case and now Valdosta's police chief. But Coleman said that compar- 'ing the two rulings is unfair.

In the Alday ruling, the 11th Circuit held that even though the defendants -were obviously guilty, pretrial publicity prevented them' from receiving a fair trial and that they de served to be retried, said Coleman. Owens, however, ruled that the state had not proved its case against Wilcox and that his conviction was unconstitutional. "I've been asked about the fact that Judge Owens did, not clearly say in his ruling that Keller is inno they have a jury of 12 people that votes to send a man to jail, how one judge can turn him loose," said Hanks, a 57-year-old state prison officer and resident of the Lowndes County town of Morven. "It seems like the ones who get stepped on are the-ones who pay the price. The ones who commit the crimes get all the help." Doc Griffin, Mrs.

Hanks' older brother, said Owens' ruling sends a message to young people that they can commit crimes and get away with 1 "It's a bad example to this world; it's a bad example to this country," said Griffin, who owns a bar and liquor store in nearby Nashville. "It's a bad example for our judicial system. I think the man got a fair trial."
