To these must be added the 80 or more bombers, known in the West as the Backfire, that are deployed with the airfleets. These medium-range nuclear weapons are a decisive element in Soviet military superiority in Europe. The present propaganda campaign is seen by NATO's military leaders and civilian officials as directed solely at the West's attempt to meet the Soviets' superiority by deploying Pershing II face missiles and long-range cruise missiles. There would be 572 weapons in the two; weapons systems.

The warning appeared directed primarily at the Western Europeans and the West Germans in particular, among whom the Soviet leader evidently hopes to kindle popular and political opposition to Western rearmament planning.

Another defense witness, Robert Howell, a Louisville, Ky, policeman, testified Monday about an alleged 850,000 offer to Underbill to testify against Thevis in a civil suit involving arson. -4 Howell said Louisville attorney Carl Victor representing Urban Industries, which Thevis allegedly had burned down as a peep-show competitor told him it had been agreed to pay Underbill $50,000 if he would testify against Thevis on behalf of the company. Howell said he had been -hired to guard Underhill while be was in Louisville. Howell said FBI agent Paul King talked to Underhill before Underhill gave a deposition for the trial, and that Underhill later said they had reduced the offer for him to testify to $2,000 plus a percentage of the judgment against Thevis if the company won its civil suit against him.

Thevis is charged with conspiring to murder Underbill. The prosecution accuses Thevis of murder in the slay-ings of UnderhiO, Mayes and two other persons as part of an attempt to monopolize pornography business in this country through a pattern of racketeering activities. Mrs. Thevis, the mother of Thevis's five children, some of whom were in court Monday, took the Fifth Amendment twice Monday outside of the presence of the Jury. She refused on constitutional grounds to answer questions about Thevis during the time be was a fugitive from prison between April and November of last year.

When Assistant VS. Attorney Dorothy Kirkley asked Mrs. Thevis if the FBI had contacted her after Thevis's escape, she leaned over and conferred with her attorney, Morton Blank, and then declined to answer. She again conferred with Blank and invoked the Fifth Amendment which allows a person to refuse to answer if the answer might tend to be self-mcriminating when asked whether Thevis had contacted her while he was an escapee. When the jury returned, Mrs.

Kirkley, under instructions from VS. District Judge Harold Murphy, did not repeat the questions relating to Thevis while he was a fugitive. Mrs. Kirkley at one point brought up the question of Mrs. Thevis's property settlement ai a result of her divorce from Thevis in May 1978.

Mrs. Thevis said she was awarded the Thevis mansion in northwest Atlanta which has been valued at between $2 million and 83 million and alimony of per month "for life."
