The network feels the ending might be too grim for viewer comfort, and is considering ending McLean's career on the show by just leaving it with him flying off into the wild blue yonder Big-time moviemaker Ray Stark Girl," "The Way We is going to get involved with the small screen. During the 40 years he spent playing bit-part Oriental villains on screen, he only had to worry about how well he handled a role.

But now there are those who object to who and what he is off the screen and are protesting his casting as "Khan!" in the CBS, February-debuting series. "Khan!" Marks Dhiegh's first starring assignment and will feature him as an Oriental detective who works out of San Francisco's Chinatown. "Unfair!" are the shouts coming from his detractors, who maintain that Khigh is merely passing as Oriental. To such charges, Dhiegh responds, "They are false and they are true." And to the claims-of others that he is black, he answers, "Those claims are wrong and they are right." The full truth of the matter, he explains, is he is many things. His mother was of Spanish, Egyptian and Chinese lineage his father Italian, Portuguese and Zulo Indian.

The producers of his CBS series have not been the only ones to get caught up in the current storm of controversy surrounding the performer. Gerald Isenberg, producer of the Dec. 29 ABC movie, "Judge Dee in the Monastery" has been on the receiving end of crticism from the Los Angeles Chinese communiiy for having cast Dhiegh as lead in a production which has been promoted as featuring an all-Oriental cast. To those who would have him removed as "Khan!" who object to his "Judge Dee" portrayal and to all those who, like a certain New York producer, "is going out of his way to give me a hard time" Khigh lashes back, "They are liberal revolutionaries with social acne and their premise is both unfair and 1 9Cltf 38ltltU88ift 85t. tf CalHor.howt FLESH GORDON BUfORD HIGHWAY I 451-1652 CALL OF THE WILD Laugh All You Want To flOSWUl VILLAGE II 993-7884 OLD DIXIE TWN 8 0 363-8722 BUfORO HIGHWAY I 452-1652 TO) is 5HUWINU Al m.

If their complaints are valid, that would' mean no Chinese could ever portray a Japanese, no white an Indian, no Jew an Italian. Their premise is totally emotional and irrational. As far as what I am: I am a man, a human being attempting to see the beauty in all human beings." He is also going to be a CBS star unique in the history of that network. For Khigh Dhiegh believes that no man should be singled out for glory on a film endeavor.

He is insisting that his name appear nowhere on the credits of "Khan!" for he feels, "The important thing is the show, hot the individual." Through the looking glass: Edward Albert and Kate Jackson have returned from, Sicily, where he's been making a documentary on the history of the Mafia and is bearing the scars to prove it. Edward insisted upon doing his own stunt work in the film, and though he didn't end up with any broken bones as a result of the experience, he's still taking pain pills to dull the ache of the bumps and bruises he sustained during rough-stuff shooting. He's not complaining about the discomfort, mind you. If fact, he's overjoyed at having been involved with the project. It proved to be such a profitable experience, he and Kate are now refurnishing CUniKUlf IT 8)1 ft uirm 7r.

About a third of all shows now being staged here are British in origin, whether transplants of London productions or American-cast reproductions of London originals. Among the seven import shows now on view are such hits as "Equus," "Sherlock Holmes" and "Scapino." Most of the current crop of British imports has come from two of Britain's subsidized theaters rather than from the commercial West End. "Sherlock Holmes" and "London Assurance" are the productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Among the shows deriving from nonsubsidized British theater are "Absurd Person Singular," "My Fat Friend," "In Praise of Love," which opens shortly and the recently closed "Good Evening." The reasons and the effect of the British activity draw varying interpretations from those involved in bringing the plays here.

Kermit Bloomgarden, producer associated with "Equus," said, "It's much easier to see a finished product and bring it in than it is to originate one here. There are not that many originals around here that I want to do. Each one of us who is doing a British play here found one we liked it's not just that we all decided to do English plays this year." David Merrick, who will bring in "The Misanthrope" next March and has in the past sponsored a number of British productions here, said, "I haven't been able to find any good American plays." mesnest Making if Wittfiu ia XUCHAUWIIINU mother of them warm women BSATHWISIT 3:004:50 IHUWIHb Al bUU. 9:35 PEACHTREE BATTLE 1 2375505 THE FILTHIEST SHOW IN TOWN SHOWING AT 5:15, 6 55, 8:30, 10:00 EARLY SHOWS AT WEIS ONLY AT 2.15, 3.45 fircTNlTA7n9Fi5Tg) IWEK SANDY SPRINGS! 252 688g I WEB CANDLER II I 241 253B 1 THE GREEN HORNET -sri'jf; SI- Qft iiJtM'J 3 I DEATH WISH gjl 1 PETH WISH CHINATOWN gl CALL OF THE WILD i i SHOWING AT 2.15, 5:30, 0:40 B89Ufat8 Plus ol ach Driv-ln: THUNDERFIST VU AS'EN CHINCHU IB.
