THE ATLANTA CONSTlTiri ION, Ui. c. A 1W MOVIE REVIEW I 'Dog Day Afternoon' Poignant, Fnnny ters reveal themselves. Sonny, in his defiance of the police, becomes a charismatic hero to the crowd outside the bank. But a change in attitude is obvious when it is learned Sgt.

Moretti. Nervously, Moretti tries to strike a deal with the skittish Sonny, all the while he is barely able to control the ludicrous army of armed police surrounding the bank. Always there to monitor Moretti is the coldly efficient FBI agent Sheldon, played by James Broderick. The actors in the huge cast selected by Lumet are consistently fine. And Lumet does an outstanding job with the crowd scenes, as he did in "The Pawnbroker." Beginning from a simple incident the story grows increasingly rich as the charac largely from a lack of killer instinct Before locking up the female tellers, Sonny asks if anyone has to go to the bathroom.

His big mistake is burning the ledger book. Smoke escaping through the vent results in the police being called. Busloads of them surround the bank. A major point the film makes is that the harmless robbers become dangerous only because of the police overkill. Two desperately under-qualified criminals with the strangest of motivations found themselves trapped in a bank, surrounded by hundreds of police, peered at by television cameras, and alternately cheered and jeered by a mob of kibitzers. In "Dog Day Afternoon," director Sidney Lumet and screenwriter Frank Pierson have molded the offbeat Incident into one of the better films of the year. This film is sure to get Al Pacino his annual Academy Award nomination. Playing Sonny, the sympathy-provoking leader of the robbery, Pacino demonstrates his widest range yet Sonny's sidekick, Sal, is played by John Cazale, who laved Pacino's brother Fredo i "The Godfather" and Its sequel Sonny has worked as a bank teller, and he knows the technical details: where the money is, how to prevent employes from sounding an alarm, and so on.
