United Presi International STAUGHTON LYND 'Just Another Student' BOYS' JEANS AND CASUAL SLACKS $4.99 orig. $9.00 to $1 1 .50 By GREGORY GORDON CHICAGO (UPI) He is 44 years old and a leading academic radical, but he sits in class at the University of Chicago's law school "just like one of the boys." It is quite a turnabout for Staughton Lynd.

In 1965, when Lynd was a history professor at Yale University, he flaunted a State Department ban and became one of the first American antiwar activists to visit Hanoi and Peking. He gained a name as a left-1st leader. He encouraged demonstrations against the war and "deliberate lawbreak-ing through nonviolent disobedience" as a means of dissent. He also continued his research and his writing. Today, most U.S.

troops are gone from Southeast Asia. Staughton Lynd sits quietly in law school classes because he has found a new cause. Lypd predicts there will be another civil rights movement in the 1970s, by America's rank and file laborers, and he wants to contribute. "One way you could describe what happened in the '60s was that a whole lot of people who didn't feel that iiey had rights, whether it was soldiers in uniform, or high school students, or blacks or women, came to feel that they did have rights, and that somehow they were being left out," said Lynd, conservatively bartoered and dressed. "I think that's going to begin happening with American working people especially in -their role as working peoplfi-'l, Lynd said he would like to study labor law so he can serve rank and file workers whose pleas for help are rejected by union attorneys.

"Many rank and file trade unionists feel that the leadership of their unions is part of the problem and that they have two groups of people with whom they are contendingthe employers on the one hand and the union on die other," he said. "So when they need help fliey have nowhere to go, because almost all labor lawyers are retained by either management or by trade unions. I'd like not so much to cease being a historian and to become a lawyer, but if possible to have legal skills to offer people in this situation. seems to me that one of the most undemocratic things about our society is the fact that people go to work eight hours a day and take orders from other people whom they have not elected. Not only do I have a great deal of compassion for people in that situation, but I have the intuition that that is the next o'ace where the spirit of the '60s is going to make itself felt." Lynd said he went through a "hassle" before he was accepted into the Chicago law school, which has a reputation for being one of the more liberal in the nation.

Following his controversial trip to Hanoi, Peking, Moscow and Prague, Lynd went on leave from Yale and encou-tered -difficulty obtaining a teaching post at Chicago State College, where he was first revised, then offered a job, and Reduced from stock the selection includes both jeans and casual slacks in solids and patterns. Boys', Downtown and all suburban stores except Belvedere later at Roosevelt University, where he was denied a post while protesting students disrupted classes.

In 1969, he encouraged a campus sit-in at the University of Chicago because a female faculty member was not retained. Lynd refuses to elaborate on his entrance difficulties, saying, "It's over, I'm there." He has kept such a low profile while attending classes that one faculty member commented, "You would not know he was there in a way." Lynd said, "I think there was an expectation that I would immediately begin my subversive activities. I prefer, really, as much as I can, to be just another student. "My attitude at my advanced age is very much that of the returning GI who wants to get through it as quickly as possible." School Dean Phillip Neal and Professor Stanley Katz, the chairman of the law school selection committee, also declined to comment on Lynd's admission because such information is confidential. However, no sooner did the soft-spoken naive Chicagoan show up for class but rumors began to fly about opposition to his presence by certain faculty members.

One professor revealed that there was "some friction" over Lynd's acceptance. A faculty memlber, who did not wish to be named, said Lynd has acted as an "exemplary student" in his first three months of classes. "He's slightly older than students are, but he's just being one of the boys," the professor said. "It looks like a swell adjustment. I could never do that well myself."
