'4-F Atlanta Unreal nd CONSTITUTION SUNDAY, JANUARY 2, 1972 POSTMARK: HOLLYWOOD An Earful of Old Hits For Bogdanovich, 7. CUSTOMERS OFFERED MORE THAN MOVIE SAN FRANCISCO-Don Siegel, who directed Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" for Warner shot several scenes at the Roaring Twenties, a nudie bar on San Francisco's Broadway. Right next door was another palace of nudity, Big Al's, in front of which stood a barker hustling midday customers, "Come on in," he urged, "And see what the movie leaves out." THIRD WEEK 1 3 the Los Angeles office will be made after the first of the year. THE CATHOLIC award naming "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" as best movie of the year praised Tom Courtenay's movie for the "serious and objective manner in which the film sue ceeds in making the viewer live through the cruelty of the situation in which prisoners of a concentration camp find themselves This film has universal implications since it allows the viewer to recall numerous similar situations. Under diverse political regimes throughout the world men suffer the abuse of power because of their convictims." mhsmUm nun in THIRD WEEK I 1 A 3 Cybill Shepherd Robert Ryan, the singer, is the latest.

Hers will be a non-musical role. Also in the movie are Charlton Heston, Walter Pidgeon and Yvette Mimieux. TWENTIETH. Century-Fox says a decision on the proposal to consolidate a number of New York operations into GLENDA JACKSON Timothy Bottoms Stuart Whitman with Anthony Perkins and Tuesday Weld, but it was a fairly good thriller and should have had a wider audience. Miss Weld and Perkins are teamed again in the Frank Perry movie called "Play It As It Lays." THE WORD is that a sequel to "Summer of '42" will be made, bringing back Gary Grimes, who was the smitten boy, and director Robert Mulligan.

Jennifer O'Neill, it seems, cannot be in the second picture because she was pretty well written out at the end of the first one. "Kidnapped" 0Nk fl IT'S By SCOTT CAIN Peter Bogdanovich, whose Last Picture Show" is -'ijme of the most acclaimed lnovies of the year, is a stick- 3er for detail, "a blithering fa-; Tfctic about accuracy." had decided in advance production that the film's Jnly music would be the sound of-popular music hitsemerg-frig from juke boxes, radios '--and phonographs. And, since the story was set "in a dreary Texas town of ths early '50s, he consulted faded show business publications to remind himself about the pop- ular tunes of the day. He assembled a list of 500 Juts of 1951 and 1952, obtained of each one, listened to them all and finally boiled the list down to the neighborhood of 30, and these the ones heard on the soundtrack. Costuming was approached from a similar angle.

Designer Pclly Piatt had purchased 700 costumes from the MGM auction, and this yielded abundance of material at low cost. The jeans worn by Cybill Shepherd in "Last Picture Show" were first sported by Debbie Reynolds in "I Love Melvn." Even Bogdanovich got into the act. The trousers he wore directing the film can -ef ill be seen on the late show because John Wayne wore in "Three Godfathers." (As a side note, it should be out that Bogdanov-Ich's star is Timothy Bottoms, who has been very fortunate in his first two movie assignments. His "Johnny Got His Gun" was a great critical suc-, cess and "The Last Picture Show" looks as if it will ex-" "peed his earlier triumph.) UUOrJDERFUL! MICHAEL CAINE She's from the leash and license He's footloose -T0DAY- "SMASHIIsG ENTERTAINMENT. Ryan's dignity and talent have seen him through a lot of bad movies, most recently "The Love Machine." IT'S GOOD news that Nino Rota is doing the music for "The Godfather." No matter how the rest of the picture turns out, it will be worthwhile just for Rota's contribution. It's interesting also to learn that Paramount is confident "Godfather" will be a big hit. In preparation for the Easter premiere in New York, the studio has arranged to run the movie at Loew's State land II, the first time one film has played both houses. THERE'S AN exceptional cast working in a movie called "Three Men Went to War." Ian McKellan, the brilliant stage actor, and Tom Bell have joined Anthony Quinn and Tom Baker. No explanation yet for four stars in a movie about three people.

TWO OF OUR favorite ghouls are making several movies. "Horror Express" goes into production soon with both Peter Cushing and Chris-t Lee. Additionally, dishing stars with Judy Gee-son and Joan Collins in "Fear in the Night." Christopher Lee has a movie called "Dracula A.D. 1972" ready for release. STILL NO word on the actress who will have the title role in "Mame.i- IN ANSWER to the question whatever happened to Liza-beth Scott? we're not sure, but she has finally returned to movies.

"Memoirs of a Ghost Writer" has gone into production in Malta with Miss Scott, Michael Caine, Mickey Roo-ney and Lionel Stander. ANOTHER figure from the past is Troy Donahue. He seems to be everywhere these days, with countless movies either being released or produced. The latest one in pro-d i is "Without Last Rights," being filmed in Pat-erson. N.J.

ALMOST NOBODY in the world saw "Pretty Poison" PETER BOGDAN OVICH Has Big John's Pants STUART Whitman's career hasn't been quite the same since he made that movie in which he and Susannah York were upstaged by baboons. One would have thought Whitman had learned his lesson, but his next movie is ominously called "Rabbits," a suspense drama about a college professor who delves into the ecological rebellion. I KNOW numerous people who saw "200 Motels" several times. Once was quite encugh for me. although it was so bizarre I'm glad I went.

The success of that one has prompted mastermind Frank Zappa to plan another movie. The title is "Alice in Rock Wonderland." ROBERT RYAN is in Paris working on a movie and, in LAST' YEAR, "Love Story" was the big boxoffice news of the holiday season. This year, "Diamond Are Forever" seems to be the landslide hit. Sean Connery's magic as Agent 007 seems not to have faded. STILL MORE people are being added to the cast of "Airborne." Leslie Uggams, Mm ''it: OF SEAT.
