Tom Bladon shot from the right point, the puck rebounding off Desjar-, dins to Lonsberry at the top of the circle. Lonsberry ripped it right between the Buffalo goalie's legs as the sellout crowd of 17,077 cheered loudly for their defending Stanley Cup champions.

The frustrated Sabres came back at 11:07 to slash the lead to 2-1. Jim Lor-entz passed from the sideboards to Martin, a 43goal scorer for the Sabres in the regular season, and the winger finally got one past Parent for his sixth goal of the playoffs. The Sabres were back in the game for exactly 34 seconds. Clarke won a faceoff from Don Luce in the Buffalo zone. The Flyers center turned, followed the puck to the net and Desjardins came out to cut the angle.

Clarke beat the seemingly impregnable Par- -ent. The Flyers, however, padded their advantage to 3-1 34 seconds later when Clarke won a faceoff in the Sabres' zone, followed the puck and blasted it past Sabres goalie Gerry Desjardins. The Flyers wrapped up the scoring at 19:02 when Barber shot into an open net for his second goal of the game and sixth of the playoffs. The second game in the series will be played here Sunday. Parent kept the Flyers alive through the first two periods as he PHILADELPHIA (AP) Bernie Parent's sensational goaltending and final period goals by Bill Barber, Ross Lonsberry and Bobby Clarke carried the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Thursday night in the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup championship playoff opener.

Barber broke up a tens scoreless defensive struggle at 3:42 of the final period, but Lonsberry's shot less than four minutes later turned out to be the winner as Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Ali stopped Chuck Wepner in the 15th round at Cleveland March 24 and already is signed to defend against Joe Bugner in Kuala Lumpur, Malyasia, June 30. Of course a Lyle victory would knock out the Malaysia fight, but Las Vegas odds-makers don't expect it to happen.

Ali is such a heavy favorite that no betting line has been established. Betting action is on whether or not Ali will win by a knockout. Ali also is confident and for the first time in may fights he has predicted the round in which he will wia "Round eight you will leave," Ali shouted at Lyle during a prefight news conference. "What if it don't get to the eighth," said Lyle. "Then I'll finish it earlier," replied Ali.

"What if you don't get to the eighth," said Lyle. "What if I don't get to the eighth?" said Ali, feigning amazement. "Oh, man." The title fight at the Las Vegas Convention Center will start about 10 p.m. EDT and will follow a 10-round nonti-'tie fight between Victor Galindez of Argentina, the World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion, and Rau Elson of New York. The Galindez-Elson fight also will be shown on the ABC home telecast which begins at 9 p.m.

EDT. Ali and Lyle will weigh in at 1 p.m. EDT Friday. The champion is expected to weigh between 219 and 222. He weighed 223Vz for the Wepner fight, but trainer Angelo Dundee says he is in much better shape this time.

Lyle, a 33-year-old ex-convict who is getting his big chance just three months after losing a 10-round decision to unheralded Jimmy Young, is expected to weigh 216. Price Steps Up Fight For AIR By GEORGE CUNNINGHAM Despite several setbacks in court, leading stockholder James H. Price is stepping up his fight to gain control of Atlanta International Raceway. The Belleaire, resident Thursday mailed out an open letter to 1,100 track stockholders inviting them to a May 22 noon meeting at the Sports Arena. "We have a common objective in the preservation of the raceway," said Price in his letter which was accompanied by a copy of his appeal to the U.S.

Supreme Court Also enclosed are several accounting statements about the track's operation since it has been a ward of the Federal Bankruptcy Court. Lewis Spearman, Price's attorney, estimated the cost of the mailing to be close to $2,000. And that is merely a drop in the of the expenses incurred by the 70-plus-year-old Price in his struggle to overturn a court decision that has awarded control of the track to Atlantans Jim Baker and Walter Nix and North Carolinian L.G. De-Witt. Price points out in the letter that "many of you were at least advised of the plan to reorganize the raceway because yon voted against the proposed plan of the trustee, Mr.

Stacey Cotton, by a vote of 212,222 shares against the plan and 37,946 shares in favor of the plan. Despite your vote, the plan was approved and would have been implemented already except for an appeal I have made in my name to the United States Supreme Court for all stockholders who are against Mr. Cotton's plan." Price contends In his letter that he originally offered to buy stock in the speedway for $3.33 a share. Trustee Cotton's plan has the Baker-Nix-DeWitt combine paying 11.60 a share. Price says he was told that he was not acceptable to the Securities and Exchange Commission and that the S.E.C.

would oppose "a substantial purchase of the raceway stock by me." Braves RainedOut; Face Phils Friday MONTREAL-Thursday's game the Atlanta Braves and the Montreal Expos was cancelled because of rain and wet grounds at Montreal's Park Jarry. The game, which began despite light, misty precipitation, was delayed after three and one-half innings with the Braves leading the Expos, 4-1. After a wait of more than an hour the contest was cancelled. No make-up date was set. The Braves, the third-place team in the National League's western division, travel to Philadelphia Friday for the first game of a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies and controversial slugger Dick Allen.

Righthander Buzz Capra (3-4) will start for the Braves in Friday's game. The Phillies will counter with rookie Mike Chris-tenson (0-0) who was recently called up from the Toledo Mud Hens of the Interna- tional League. Avatar and Diabolo were setting the pace down the stretch in the Derby two weeks ago when they collided just as Foolish Pleasure sailed past them for his 1-length victory in the first gem of the Triple Crown. Their riders, Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay insisted the bump didn't affect the outcome of the race, but many of the 30 million who watched on television weren't yi "We certainly can't look back at it," Avatar's trainer, Tommy Doyle, said.
