The one-time West Fulton Owl, Georgia Bulldog and Chicago Bear earned the right to lead a four-player Atlanta team into the national meet July 11-14 at Flanders Valley, N.J. Others qualifying were Sam Stockard 74-72146, city Publinx champ Rock Hutch-eson 72-77149 and threetime qualifier Bob McLeod 77-74-151. Benny Sledge, who finished 72-60152, won the first alternate spot in a playoff with Doug Black, 77-75-152. Rap Pue, 78-75153; Jimmy McCoy, 78-75154, and Bill Ballard, 79-75154, won the next three alternate berths.

Emile Lochbaum, a five-time qualifier, finished 75-79154 but declined to play a playoff with Ballard. his drama into the first five holes Thursday. The skinny blond was bunkered on the first hole, but dropped a 25-foot putt to save par. He punched a wedge to five feet for a birdie on the second and then made the hole-in-one on No. 5.

"The ball hit four or five feet in front of the flag and didn't hop it just trickled in like a putt," Miller said. From there in, he matched two bogeys with as many birdies and lipped out birdie attempts on the last two holes. "I'm very pleased with the 67," Miller said, "but I really didn't get that much out of the round. I feel like it could have been much better." Fezler, who lost a nationally televised heartbreaker to Trevino in Florida early this season, played the front side with nine consecutive pars. titles already this year, was in a large group at 69.

Nicklaus appeared ready to make a run at the leaders when he reeled off a string of three consecutive birdies, starting on the 14th hole, but dropped back when he bogeyed the 18th from a bunker. "I played pretty well," the Golden Bear said, "but I'd have liked it a lot better if I hadn't bogeyed that last hole." Australian Bruce Crampton, a three-time winner this season, matched par 70 on the long, lush layout, but the streaking Tom Weiskopf cooled off to a 74 and was well back in the select field of 99. Lee Trevino is not competing. The 26-year-old Miller, who fashioned a record 63 to win the U.S. Open championship last Sunday, packed most of v.
