'f f- fc. je 4.01 THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, Friday, July 23, 1976 tH i 'A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR Hilton Can Crack Them Up Ir 4 1 i I Iffy dauble-belfed says, "Whereas in other -businesses you build up experience arid a clientel and gain security with the years, in football it's the other way around. Kids look at you and say you're 33 and an old man and they say, 'I'm going out and beat out this old And you say, 'Hey, I'm not going to let this kid beat me out In the long run, with everything equal, youth wins out. "I am enjoying football now because I think this team has a chance. With the New York Giants, )ast year, knowing we weren't going' anywhere and being 32, there was not much incentive.

This is different. I think my experience can help in this' kind of situation." As one who has been, there to the Super Bowl, with Baltimore, Hilton was asked if people were being overly optimistic about this year's Falcon team. "I personally see the talent here to win," he says. "What we have to avoid are the mental mistakes that beat you. Barring injuries and that's something we can't do anything about I believe this team will jell.

Right now there is a 28-way tie for first place. What happens depends on us." Hilton has been impressed with the recovery of Humphrey. As everyone knows, the other teams will test Humphrey during the opening games. "The tight end will block down on him and they'll double him, but knowing Claude and his determination, he'll handle it," Hilton says flatly. Hilton doesn't limit his humor to the training room.

The other day he got back at Falcon receiver coach Jimmy Orr, an old Colt teammate. "One day when we were practicing in freezing snow for a championship game, Jimmy yelled at Don Shula and said, 'Hey, Shula, second place ain't all that By AL THOMY Cofijiitulion Sporls Writer GREENVILLE, S.C. If Roy Hilton were on'the stage, he'd be another Flip. Wilson or another Richard Pryor. He can laugh at himself and the brothers and poke fun at ethnic origins in a gentle way and not be offensive.

He is a tension-breaker. The other day Hilton, the third defensive end on the Falcon squad, walked into the training room to find eight blacks and one white receiving treatment. That was it, the timing was perfect for him. "Hey," he said, "we've got enough 'niggers' in here to make a Tarzan movie." 1 That broke up everyone. When the laughing subsided, Hilton delivered another one-liner.

"From the looks of things in here, they've put all us brothers in hazardous positions," he said. That is the Pryor type humor. Hilton is quite a guy. As is usually the case, his humor comes from a probing and serious mind. Things were not always so easy for him at Hazlehurst, his hometown, or at Jackson, where lie played football at Jackson State.

But he can laugh at himself and at others and that is a gift. And, for the Falcons, he is a bonus. He is 33, true, but never have the Falcons had the luxury of a backup defensive linemen of his caliber and experience. He was quite a defensive end; opposite Bubba Smith, on the great Baltimore Colt teams of a few years past. Last year, upon signing with the Falcons as a free agent to fill the void created by the absence of Claude Humphrey, Hilton said he was most 4, Falcons' Roy Hilton delighted to be returning to professional football.

"I thought about going into business but there's not much demand by U.S. Steel for a pass rusher," he said. He did well for the Falcons with four sacks, four or five batted down passes and five presses (forcing the quarterback to throw before he wanted to). This year, behind Humphrey and John Zook, he could 'give the Falcons quality reserve strength. Or, if need be, he could start.

He knows there are younger players after his job. "Football is a unique business," he Double-belted for long tread wear. A revolving door brings wide receivers in and out of the Atlanta Falcon training camp and a new face was added Thursday. Head coach Marion Campbell announced that the club had signed Ron Barnett, 6-0, 185, out of Texas-Arlington and SMU via the Seattle Sea-hawks, who made him their, 12th round draft choice.

The problem is in having: enough wide receivers on the field to scrimmage. Presently only four Darius McCarthy, Alfred Jenkins, Karl Farmer and Ron Gustafson are healthy, with John Gilliam and Wallace Francis nursing muscle pulls along with John Chisholm and Troy Slade recovering from a broken jaw. At Texas-Arlington his senior year Barnett caught 30 passes for 526 yards and six touchdowns. Originally, he signed with SMU, but transferred to Texas-Arlington. All three quarterbacks Steve Bartkowski, Kim McQuilken and Scott Hunter took shots at defense that "showed all fronts' in a lively 20-minute scrimmage Thursday afternoon.

Bartkowski passed to tight end Jim Mitchell, who broke for what would have been a long touchdown on one play. Patriots Sign Two SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) -The New England Patriots signed running back Sam Cunningham and linebacker Steve Nelson to long-term contracts Thursday but did not announce the details. Only veteran linebacker George Webster is still unsigned, and Patriots Coach Chuck Fairbanks said the team is very close to reaching agreement with him. Cunningham led the Patriots in rushing in two of the past three years, and Nelson was the team's most valuable 'player last year.

Lions Trade ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) The Detroit Lions have traded for wide receiver J. D. Hill, 27, from the Buffalo Bills, in exchange for Detroit's No. 1 choice in 1977 draft.

Hill, a 6-foot-l, 185-pounder from Arizona State, caught 160 passes for 2,631 yards and 20 touchdowns in his five-year career with the Bills. He led Buffalo with 52 catches in his sophomore season in 1972 and was the club's No. 2 receiver the past three seasons. Last year Hill caught 36 passes for 667 yards and seven touchdowns. "We consider him' one of the best receivers in the league," said Lions General Prices shown in this ad available at Firestone stores.
