SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1 979 fffrr Atlanta goumnl and fONSTmTlON 5-C fi. ft fp mt tin 177 4-0 rd Upsets Class AAA Power Dalton 1 down. Thus, Woodward led 14-0 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter without benefit of a single first down. "It was a weird game," said Dalton Coach Bill Chappell. "It looked like a case of Dalton beating Dalton.

I'm not taking anything away from Woodward. They have a fine team. But I did a very poor job of preparing our team offensively for this game. We just did not block consistently, especially down close where it counted. And our kicking game was terrible.

Our defense played well enough to win, but they didn't get much help." touched by a Woodward defender. Woodward's Wendell Harden scooped up the ball at the Dalton 15 and raced untouched into the endzone for the first TD. Charlie McNash added the first of two extra points and Woodward led 7-0 with 3:10 left Two possessions later, Dalton's Pete Wilson was hit hard fielding one of seven Woodward punts, and the ball bounced out of his arms and rolled 24 yards into the Dalton endzone. Woodward's Michael Wade outran everybody to the ball and fell on it for his team's second touch Dalton saw two scoring opportunities fail in situations almost as unusual as Woodward's scoring plays. The Catamounts, 3-0 entering the contest, drove from their own 14 to the Woodward 3 in the closing minute of the second quarter, but watched in horror as the clock ran out after quarterback Dudley Phillips was tackled for no gain on second-and-goal from the 3.

"We were out of timeouts," said Chappell, "and we were having trouble getting word to our sophomore quarterback to stop the clock with an incomplete pass. We should have scored there, and total yards offense at the half and no first Woodward did not make a first down against the Dalton defense until just 1:47 remained in the third quarter. Woodward punter Mike Chance was the War Eagles' most effective offensive weapon, as the 170-pound junior punted seven times on a wet, muddy field without a miscue, six times pinning Dalton inside its own 30-yard line. Four times Chance backed up the Catamounts inside their 15-yard line, once inside the 1-yard line. By Steve Figneroa Constitution Staff Writer DALTON It was one of those outcomes that just can't happen but does.

Dalton, ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, outgained visiting Woodward Academy 220-135 in total yardage and 16-4 in first downs, but lost 14-0 Friday night because of two strange fumble plays that resulted in both Woodward touchdowns. Dalton halfback Mitchell House slipped in his own backfield late in the first quarter and fumbled without being we should have scored at the end of the game." Chappell referred to Dalton's last-ditch try to avoid a shutout, as the Catamounts marched from their 36 to the Woodward one-inch line, only to have substitute quarterback Wilson fail on two consecutive quarterback sneaks as the clock ran out Woodward's deepest penetration on offense was to the Dalton 27 late in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Toney Kemp hit Phil Henson on a scoring pass and Chuck North kicked the extra point as Central its record to 3-1 in Class AA. Bowdon fell to 1-3. Rabun Co.

13, Etowah Jeff Ramey carried the ball 38 times for 223 yards and scored one of the two touchdowns as Rabun County shut out Etowah 13-0. Ramey scored on a 5-yard run in the third period and followed the TD with a PAT kick. Gary Keller broke loose in the fourth quarter for 44 yards and the other Rabun score. S. Stacks broke loose in the first quarter to give Gwinnnett a 14-0 lead following a 1-yard run by Dean Jobko. Chris Burton kicked both extra points. Gwinnett, 2-2, scored again in the second quarter on a 23-yard pass play, Craig King to tight end Carlyle Hewatt Burton added the PAT to make it 21-0. Hart Co.

6, Monroe MONROE Danny Hughes ran 41 yards for the games's only score to give Hart County a 6-0 win over Monroe Area. Both teams are 1-3. By Earnest Reese Constitution Staff Writer Cedar Shoals, which plummeted from the Class AAAA ratings when it fell 7-6 to Atlanta's Harper High School last Weekend, got some revenge Friday night on a rain-soak field at Grady Stadium. Helped along by four second-half Therrell fumbles, Cedar Shoals fought from a 12-3 halftime deficit to defeat the previously-unbeaten Wolves 15-12. "It's nice to beat an Atlanta school," said Cedar Shoals Coach John Waters, whose team survived three lost fumbles of its own to secure its third win in five games.

"We told our players before the game that the team that fumbled less' would be the team that won." Halfback Michael Daniel, playing both ways, recovered a Therrell fumble at the Panthers' 29-yard line to set up Cedar Shoals' game-winning touchdown with 7:25 left in fourth quarter. Daniel then went to a wide receiver post on offense, and caught a 22-yard pass from quarterback Tyrone Davis. Three plays later, Davis gave the Jaguars a lasting 15-12 lead with a 1-yard sneak. Therrell got a chance to make all of its fumbling insignificant five minutes later. Defensive tackle Mike Phillips pounced on Cedar Shoals' final fumble at the Jaguars' 35 with 2:00 left With 1:05 remaining, Therrell had first-and-goal to go from Cedar Shoals' 7, but was forced to relinquish the ball at the 2-yard line after exhausting its four downs.

"I don't know what to say, so I'll say nothing if you'll forgive me," a seemingly stunned and dejected Coach Joe Wall of Therrell said. Cedar Shoals took a 3-0 lead on placekicker Blayne Spratlin's 36-yard field goal with 3:05 left in the first period. But on its next possession, Therrell, utilizing the elusiveness of transfer Tunning back Darrell Norton and. a 32-ryard run by Lilton Griffin marched, 80 yards in eight plays to go up, 6-3 with 11:39 left in the second quarter, Quarterback Hubert Ross capped that By Brian CShea SpkM To Tht Journal-Comlitullon ATHENS Qarke Central, the top-ranked Class AAAA team in Georgia in both The Constitution and The Journal, had to overcome a 10-point deficit to defeat Tucker 35-21 Friday night and protect its unbeaten status. The visiting Region 8-AAAA-North sub-region foe jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Steve Bennett an extra-point kick by Don Hairston and a 17-yard field goal by Hariston.

The Gladiators, now 5-0, cut the margin to three points in the second when Dwayne Harden scored from the 1 and Rickey Green converted. But the Tigers got another field goal from Hairston before the quarter ended, this time a 20-yarder, and Tucker was ahead 13-7 at the half. Clarke asserted its authority in the third when Josh Starks broke loose on a 56-yard scoring run and Darryl Moore later recovered a fumble and ran it 80 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. But Tucker came right back with a one-yard keeper by Tommy Mills and Spike Freeman's 2-point run that tied the score at 21-21 at the end of the third period. It was all Clarke in the fourth, however, as Charlie DFean hit Darryl Moore for a 59-yard touchdown that put the Gladiators ahead for keeps.

Then, with just 22 seconds remaining in the game, Charlie Dean intercepted a Tucker pass and returned it 32 yards for the clincher. The loss left Tucker with a 2-3 record. Lithonia 10, Cross Keys Lithonia ran its record to 4-0 by scoring a field goal in the first quarter and a touchdown in the second to defeat Cross Keys 10-0 at Adams The Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 by the Journal and No. 9 by the Constitution in Class AAA, took a 3-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Ron Rice.
