Add for delivery outside normal store delivery area, Garden Clubs Lead Project To Beautify Downtown Site Continued From Section Front May of 1972 when presidents and representatives of several area garden clubs met to learn of plans being formulated to beautify the site. In her original letter to the clubs, Mrs.

Candler wrote, "Let us, the garden clubs of this area, join together in providing a meaningful ecological image of what garden clubs are doing in America. What we've done so far is the first thrust; very embryonic." IN THE FIRST stage of development, located on the Techwood Viaduct plaza levels, three gardens have been completed. In addition, several of the 6 6 foot seasonal planters are sponsored and have been planted with marigolds for the summer months. The planters are sponsored for one year only and plans call for them to be planted with chrysanthemums in the fall; azaleas during, spring months and be covered with a decorative mulch in winter. The Planters Club garden was the first completed.

It is a two-story shade garden with 4 large elm trees, over-sized sasanquas, a ground cover of decorative mulch with a path through the garden. Volcanic boulders add to the contrast of forms and light. A large Chinese evergreen forms the focal point, surrounded by white azaleas. (The garden is featured on section front). Special lighting also has been installed in this garden.

TWO OTHER CLUBS, Indian Creek and Sherwood For- est, also have sponsored individual gardens of Sherwood azaleas. Seasonal planters are being sponsored by Lenox Park and Nancy Creek clubs and Mrs. Lucy Levy, a member of Sherwood Forest Club, who sponsors one individually. These planters are in the center area of redwood doughnut shaped benches located on the plaza level. Although the proposed landscaping budget for the arena includes the planting of elms, clumps of weeping willows, hollies, loblolly pines, specimen winged elms and placement of benches, cost estimates are constantly changing.

The price of beef is not all that's jumping by leaps and bounds. So trees, plants, flowers, planting and maintenance. "There's just not enough money to finish the total landscape environment," Mrs. Candler said. "If gardens are going to be there they have to come from somewhere else.

Frankly, it's a matter of civic pride. Garden clubs are the logical ones to do it. "WE, OF PLANTER'S, feel most strongly that helping to landscape the Omni is indeed a worthy project. Here is an opportunity to make hundreds of thousands of people aware of what garden clubs can do. It needs some softening touches of greenery because it has so much steel, glass and concrete.

It is definitely a Thrift Shop Schedules Sale Council Thrift Shop will have a two day warehouse sale Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The reason for the sale is the limited area in the shop and the large quantities of summer clothes members have donated. Also being offered during the sale will be furniture, garden supplies, electrical equipment and housewares. All profits will go to help support Councils projects in Atlanta for all citizens.

In the areas available for garden club sponsorship, which is by funding, the project may be as small as a ground covering for an area, or one of the large gardens, a single tree, large or small, or any of the many other contributions needed.

Name plaques have been placed throughout the area developed. Eventually, although not yet formalized representatives from the contributing garden clubs and other groups, will serve on a council for the coliseum project and act as liaison between the clubs and the City of Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority to coordinate the over-all volunteer effort. MRS. CANDLER, recently SUNDAY, MAY 20, 1973 named to the state board of the Garden Club of Georgia as calendar chairman, has served as spokeswoman and chairman for the project for more than a year. Others working with her were Mrs.
