'Impulse' Fails As Action Film 1261-94001 However, I can't think of any reason why children should see it. Adults either, for that matter. By FARNUM GRAY CmUUUm EalerulMcM Writer "Impulse," despite implications of its advertising, is nothing at all like "The Exorcist" There is no possession, nothing about demons. Even the "evil" is not convincing. Like a number of other recent would-be money-makers, it tries to be a thriller about a psychopathic killer.

But making one of those takes skill, and "Impulse" falls on its face. William Shatner, who plays the nut, has some peculiar ideas about how disturbed people act As a child, he killed a man who was assaulting bis mother. As an adult gigolo, he kills the woman who keeps him. Then he tries to make it as a con man. However, he is shadowed by Karate Pete, played by Harold (Odd Job) Sakata.

IfTli 5:44 mi There is no discernible reason for Pete to be following him, except that Sakata made a name for himself as a James Bond villain, and director William Grefe worked him into the film. Grefe, while visiting the Atlanta International Film Festival, described himself as formerly a top director of action scenes chases, fights, and so on. Thus, is it surprising that he has some absurdly awkward action scenes in this movie. Viewers sometimes laugh when they are supposed to be holding their breaths. In one scene, Shatner tries to kill Karate Pete with a technique that couldn't possible work.

He stands on the roof of a building until Pete happens to walk over and stand just under the edge of the roof. Then he drops a noose over Pete's neck. Pete cooperatively stands still until the noose is settled and Shatner has pulled it tight That doesn't quite finish him, though, so then they have a chase through an automatic carwash. It's a clean movie, rated PG, with no language or nudity that would put it off limits to children.
