SMITH i Learning to walk with short, mincing steps with knees always bent was the hard-.

est thing Polish-born Teresa Zylis-Gara ever jiad to learn for a role in an opera. "It was very' and it took and my knees hurt so much," the opera singer in her vivacious way. But nevertheless, she forgives the pain because Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's "Madame is a favorite role hers, just as She "likes every opera Puccini ever wrote." Once, when she was still a student back Poland, she got caught up so much in Cio-Cio-San's plight that she cried on stage. "It was terrible' When you cry you can't sing. Since that time I've never allowed myself to get this far, but it's still a danger for me.

Emotional moments are very tricky for me. I'm a very emotional and sentimental person myself, and when I do a role, I try to interpret it as if were happening to me privately. I try to be very real, 'very human." Miss Zylis-Gara is a very human person face to she's very much all woman in a full blown, lush way. At one point in her life, Miss Zylis-Gara had to make a difficult decision. "It's impossible to be a wife, mother "and artist of international fame all atone time," she says.

"I chose to be the artist, I 1 accept my choice and everything that has happened in my private life as a result. I love music too much to give it up." So she left her six year old son with her mother in Poland and went to Germany to begin her rise to fame. "It is something special to have a talent. It brings a responsibility with it. My mother was very happy about my choice, and I hope very much my son will under-) stand me someday when he's more mature.

I saw sometimes he was not happy, and this is difficult." Miss Zylis-Gara will visit her son this-summer, as she always does. "It is easy for me to go into and out of Poland. I am such a good ambassador for Polish culture and I do a good job for them. I think the different countries should get together more." The soprano's rise to fame Mowed quickly on the heels of an international contest she won which opened the German opera houses to her, becoming the leading soprano of the Rhine Opera in Dusseldorf, a city she now calls home. She made her American debut as Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" with the San Francisco Opera in 1968, a role that had brought her to the turning point in her reer, she says, when she sang it with the Paris Opera in 1966.

a "Everything after that happened very, very Garden, Salsburg, and then America. It didn't even surprise me, I was prepared for it." When Miss Zylis-Gara came to the United States, she spoke absolutely no English, though she could speak German, Russian, French, Italian and Polish. "I didn't learn very well," she says too modestly as she communicates perfectly even though the words come out with unfa- miliar inflections'. "In the Met, you don't need English, so I wasn't under pressure to learn it. We speak very much Italian, I guess because there are so many Italian singers." GUARANTEED l-Coat, 450 sq.

It includes over 24 roles ranging from Mozart to Verdi, Bach to Puccini In addition to singing major roles in operas, she sings oratorios and makes concert appearances.

"I like variety, in all things." She also loves beautiful clothes, and "to shop in boutiques too much." New Orleans turns her on and she finds it the most beautiful city in the United States. She dislikes the act of traveling because "I don't like to make all the luggage in order" but she likes to go on spring tour with the Met because she likes to meet new people. He week in Atlanta hasn't been a vacation for her, however. She's hard at work learning her role of Liu which she will sing in "Turandot" during the June Festival at the Met in New York. Once in a while, her practicing in her hotel room will bring an exasperated knock from an adjoining room and then "I have to stop." But sometimes it works the other way, and the neighbors ask her to keep on singing "forever." Atlantans who already have tickets (the performance is sold out) will hear Miss Zylis-Gara and Jier "warm and sensitive" voice in "Madame Butterfly" Saturday evening at Civic Center.

And they'll see a Polish blond transform herself into a dainty footed Japaness geisha who will spend "60 per cent of the opera on her knees."
