NEWS REPORTS have it that "The Godfather" has be-c the biggest money movie in Italian history, although it was not released there until September. Displaced is the former champion, "Trinity Is Still My Name," the zany cowboy movie with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. AFTER BURT Lancaster makes "The Midnight Man," presumably at Clemson, he has been asked to do "Gulliver's Travels." Susan Clark, who worked with him in "Valdez Is Coming," will co-star in "Midnight Man." REFLECTING on the huge success of "Frenzy," Alfred Hitchcock told a reporter that he does not have a new movie forthcoming.

"I'm a prisoner of my own material," he complained. "THE SEVEN Ups," a police melodrama, reunites Roy Scheider and Tony LoBianco. They were both in "The French Connection." LoBianco, cultists will recall, was the handsome murderer in love with a very plump gun moll in "The Honeymoon Killers." GOOD NEWS: Jean Sorel, the handsome European star, will appear in the remake of "Trader Horn" opposite Rod Taylor. Sorel will have the role played by Duncan Rcnal-do in the original.

Sorel has most recently been in "Perversion Story" (what a title!) and Fred Zinnemann's "Jackal." "IT SEEMS I've become Tom Jones in my 50s," Howard Coscll says. I don't know anybody else who's saying it. He plays a sports announcer in "The World's Greatest Athlete." ACTOR'S name of the week: Jho Jhenkins, a former member of Katherine Dunham's dance troupe, who's in "Shaft in Africa." TITLE change of the week: "One Russian Summer" with Claudia Cardinalc and Oliver Reed is now called "Days of Fury." "MAYBE life really does begin at 40," muses James Olson, who was on view here last week in "Crescendo." He says he long labored under the impression that the only real acting was being done on stage, but finds that he really likes movies. "It's great being paid to travel to new countries in order to work. I had six months in London, and enjoyed myself thoroughly." A REMINDER that special Oscars are voted by the motion picture academy's board of governors, which a a membership of 24.

Rosalind Russell has been voted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Edward G. Robinson and executive Charles Boren By SCOTT CAIN If Robert Redford looks cold in those scenes in "Jeremiah Johnson," it's no wonder. The temperature sometimes got as low as 14 below zero. "We had seven cases of frostbite, four cases of strep throat, two cases of pneumonia, and only three cases of Napoleon brandy," Redford explains.

"The weather couldn't have been rougher for the crew, but terrific for the finished film. One week the thermometer didn't get up to zero once. Even the horses balked at coming out of their stalls. I loved it." Director Sydney Pollack "wondered where it all was going to end," Redford adds. had a good idea, because I live here all year 'round and know how rough a Utah winter "can be.

I've lived here in these mountains with my family for several years." The star helped art director Edward Haworth scout locations in Utah. Haworth covered more than 26,000 miles throughout the state, sometimes surveying rough terrain from the air. Many of the settings that were finally used are actually on Jledford's property, called Sundance. Other sites were as milch as 600 miles away. IT'S ENOUGH to make a cookbook authoress weep.

Peter O'Toole, who didn't have any to spare, lost 10 pounds during the production of "Man of La Mancha," according to a source at the scene. This in spite of the fact that costar Sophia Loren's book, "In the Kitchen, With Love" has been published in countries. Sophia told reporters that the secret of a good cook is to concentrate on saaggiaa: family movie a heart warming family. jjAi i 1 lUA ielRrasise mm tured opposite Burt Reynolds, a most unusual partnership. Miss Miles, who was nominated for Oscars for "Ryan's Daughter" and "The Servant," was recently in "Lady Caroline Lamb" opposite Richard Chamberlain.

DUO-VISION, as I gather, is a process which splits the screen and allows two parts of a story to be shown at the same time. This sounds like a refinement of a technique widely used in recent years, notably in "Woodstock" and "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," except that Duo-Vision will use the device throughout the film. First movie in the process is "Wicked, Wicked." more than spectacular SCENERY and WILDLIFE! a young indian boy. JClfKO challenges the ALASKAN WILDERNESS to save the life of a friend.
