Thursday Evening, November 21, 1957. j Group Says Trotting Within Federal Laws COLUMBUS, Ohio (U:P)—Lawrence B. Sheppard, president of the United States Trotting Assn , today lashed out at statements made by the Harness Tracks of America that the USTA is in violation of federal antitrust laws. "I intend that the affairs of the USTA shall always be conducted in full conformity with the law," he said. Sheppard said he "intends to proceed in an orderly way and to be guided by the advice of our own counsel and not by the assertions . and conclusions of counsel retained by the harness tracks of America, which counsel has no responsibility to us." The HTA had issued a statement which advised its members to "act independently and individually in making its own decisions as to whether or not it desires to assume the'legal risks of continued USTA membership. The two groups are vying for control of the nation's trotting and racing tracks, now directed by the USTA. The USTA is composed of all harness racing tracks, including the county fair tracks. The HTA is composed of the major commercial tracks. Illinois Councilman Killed in Crash PONTIAC, 111. (UP)—Frederick Gittinger, 49, a member of the Chenoa City Council, was killed late Tuesday in a collision on a gravel road intersection near Ocoya, south of here. Police said Gittinger, who is 'also bulk station agent for the Standard Oil Co. at Chenoa, was killed when his truck and £.n automobile driven by Milton Mowery, 47, Fairbury, collided. Mowery was reported in serious condition at Fairbury Hospital. Police said Gittinger was thrown from his truck cab and crushed beneath the overturned vehicle. Logansport, Indiana, Pharos-Tribuno Nineteen STALIN STATUE GONE MOSCOW (UP)—A seven - foot bronze statue of Stalin has been removed from its prominent position at the entrance to Moscow's main air terminal at Vnukovo Airport, it was disclosed today. The statue was one of the last of many which adorned the city, but which have gradually disappeared since the downgrading of the former Russian dictator. The one-year study also could lead" to establishment of a new agency similar to the Legion of Decency. The hierarchy said it will look into the "most suitable and acceptable means" of keeping a moral watch over broadcasting. The action was taken by 173 Catholic cardinals, archbishops and bishops during a three-day annual meeting here last week. It was announced Tuesday' by Bishop William A. Scully of Albany, N.Y., chairman of the episcopal committee for motion pictures, radio and television.
