6.J) TIIE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, Mon, Jnl 23, 1973 DeWitt Joins AIR Takeover Pearson Rolls On Li if could find out why I lost it and wrecked." Informed of that statement, Petty replied. "Tell Bobby he can mail me that $500. There was too much oil up where we were running." Pearson, interestingly, claimed he didn't start running well until the track got slick with oil. "I didn't get any faster," he said. "Everybody else just slowed up." here this race weekend.

"Everything will be half and half between us. We will nftet Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the office of the speedway trustee to formalize my joining them." Baker and Nix have submitted a plan to the bankruptcy court whereby, for $350,000 cash plus guarantee of a loan, they would gain 52 per cent control of the financially-troubled track Stockholders and creditors will mailed a ballot this week concerning the plan that has been approved by the bankruptcy court. HAMPTON Atlantans Jim Baker and Walter Nix strengthened their chances of taking over Atlanta International Raceway with the announcement Sunday that wealthy North Carolinian L. G.

DeWitt had joined their group. DeWitt is president and majority stockholder of the ultra-successful North Carolina Motor Speedway which paid a dividend a year after it opened for business in 1965. He also owns a national trucking lin and is one of the biggest peach growers in the Southeast with orchards stretching from Florida to New Jersey. "I will be on equal terms with Nix and Baker," said De-Witt who is a guest of the duo I i I pas I 1 aT i It I I Continued from Page 1-D which means he can reach his million Aug. 12 in his next start at Talladega, Ala.

Back of the top two was a covey of also-rans. Donnie Allison was third five laps back. Rounding out the top five were Joe Frasson (seven laps in the rear) and Lennie Frasson (seven laps in the rear) and Jody Ridley, the Chatsworth, short track sensation whose Grand National division debut was the most impressive seen on the circuit in years. While Pearson had everybody chasing him for 179 of the 328 laps, he was not an early threat and was up front just 13 of the first 162 laps. Yarborough commanded the crowd's attention for 110 of those early laps.

Other first half race leaders were Isaac 29 laps, Bobby Allison for seven including the first one and Donnie Allison for three. Bobby Allison officially called it quits because of valve trouble although he also had handling problems. Petty went out on lap 72 with engine failure. Baker, who surprised by surging from 25th to second place, retired because of a rear axle and spinmit on lap 65. And the charging Isaac, super swift at the beginning, wrecked on No .52.

"I just lost the car," said Isaac of his wreck. "Petty and I were running higher on the track than most of the cars, and I guess we got up too high." Isaac and Petty were using softer compound tires than the other chargers. Isaac said, "I'd give someone $500 if I A New Ride for Ridley HAMPTON "I thought I'd croak after 100 miles," said Chatsworth's Jody Ridley. "But I didn't get tired until just 50 laps were left." Ridley, a superstar on the short track circuit around Atlanta, astounded veteran racing observers here Sunday with a fifth-place finish in the Dixie 500-miler at Atlanta International Raceway. It was Ridley's first trip on a big track, and he took home $4,800.

"I can't remember a rookie driving a more impressive race," said veteran track official Alf Knight. "He finished ahead of everybody but the hot dogs who have the hot cars. I think he got the maximum out of his machine." Ridley was chauffeuring a Mercury prepared by Junie Dunleavy which has seen 24 drivers in the last two seasons. Everyone agreed Ridley got the most out of it. "I enjoyed it," Ridley said.
