He added that union officials have not given up hope of a last-minute settlement DETROIT (AP) With a strike deadline only one day away, the United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp. imposed a news blackout on their contract negotiations Thursday night. Traditionally, the blackout has been viewed as a sign that the two sides are nearing a settlement. The blackout was imposed only a few hours after a UAW spokesman said Chrysler had not made a new economic proposal and added, "It better happen soon." The union has called Chrysler's initial three per cent wage increase offer "a mockery" and said a second proposal is essential to avoiding a strike by the firm's UAW-represented workers in the United States and Negociators prepared to bargain through the night in an effort to reach agreement before the current contract expires at 11:59 p.m.

Friday. The Detroit News said Thursday that Chrysler had submitted a new economic proposal that included a wage-benefit increase ranging from 6.2 to 7 per cent in the first year. The union denied the report. The average assembly line worker at Chrysler makes $4.48 per hour, the firm says. The union's major economic demands include an unspecified wage hike and improvements in the cost of living formula, parity pay for Canadian workers and retirement with a pension of $650 after 30 years of service regardless of age.

Jimmy Carter doesn't scoff at people who report UFO sightings, because he saw one himself about three yars ago.

And. Carter quipped, "it was on a very sober occasion." Carter said he saw a blue, disc-shaped object during a campaign stop in Leary, a South Georgia town in the same general area where numerous UFOS have been reported recently. The object came into view as Carter and several members of the Leary Lions Club stood outside the hall where Carter was to speak. All the members-of the group observed the object for about five to ten minutes, Carter said. He Reg.

Contracts covering nearly 600,000 workers at General Motors and Ford have been extended indefinitely. The UAW is attempting to win a pace-setting agreement at Chrysler. Following a 12-hour bargaining session, Wednesday UAW Vice President Douglas Fraser reported a feeling that progress had been made," despite the lack of concrete agreements.

He said bargainers had held "in-depth discussions" of the union's voluntary overtime demand. A Chrysler spokesman said the firm "would go broke" if it granted the pension demand but indicated there was a continued willingness to negotiate the issue. Chrysler workers currently can retire at age 56 with a monthly pension of $500 after 30 years with the firm. "The pension is reduced sharply if the worker is younger, however, and stops when the employe begins receiving Social Security benefits. The company fears a mass exodus of its most experienced workers if the age restriction is eliminated.

to Board Center Gary will be sworn in Oct. 1 as one of the governor's two appointees to the board. Other members include state sena-t and representatives, representatives of the hotel and motel industry, and tourist industry representatives. Gary, 47, was chairman of the House interim committee for the World Congress Center. "I babied the thing through and have wanted it for a long time," Gary said Wednesday.

"I'm real interested in making Atlanta an international city and promoting the tourist trade." The location of the $35 million center has been a hot issue since its proposal, but Gary said he believes, "It's pretty well set that it will be at the Omni site." Under a 1973 legislative act, private developers will have until Oct. 1 to make offers to build the center. Otherwise, it will be built at the Omni site with state-issued bonds. Atlanta developer Tom Cousins has offered the site on Marietta Street at Magnolia Street adjacent to the Omni. The governor announced last month, however, that developer Jim Cushman is working on plans to finance the center.

Cushman has not announced any intentions. immediately went to a tape recorder and dictated a description of what he remembers as "a very remarkable sight." "It was about 30 degrees above the horizon and looked about as large as the moon. It got smaller and changed to a reddish color and then got larger again," Carter recalled. Carter speculated that his UFO "was probably an electronic occurrence of some sort," rather than a visitation from outer space. At any rate, the governor said, "it was obviously there and obviously unidentified." Carter recounted the experience during a stop here on his statewide listening tour.

The government could build it over Carter's rejection but isn't likely to, Army officials say.

Carter hasn't shed any light on his leanings, but his office has been quick to call attention to petition against the Spewrel! Bluff Dam. Sen.
