The Steelers have put together a 3-1 record, the best among teams in the AFC's Central Division, which also includes Cleveland, Cincinnati and Houston.

In preseason estimates Pittsburgh was given little chance in the four-team race, Bradshaw, however, seems to have changed some opinions. The rookie passer from Louisiana Tech now gets what could be his most challenging assignment so far against the rugged Raiders in a final workout for the regular season opener against Houston. Namath's Jets are in the AFC's Eastern Division with Baltimore, Miami, Buffalo and Boston and, as anticipated, preseason results indicate there will be a three-way title race with the Johnny Unitas-led Colts and Dolphins, both 4-1. The Jets are 2-3 but last week, with Namath playing a half, displayed considerable offensive firepower against New Orleans. The shaggy-haired quarterback will be up against Dallas' vaunted Doomsday Defense led by Bob Lilly in a final tune-up before the opener against Cleveland.

The Cowboys meanwhile are like Pittsburgh, one of the teams who have surprised in preseason action. But they have surprised by losing. They show a 1-4 record and undoubtedly would like nothing better than to head into the regular season with a victory. Br The Assoelated Press Two No. 12s controversial Joe Namath and conservative Terry Bradshaw get their final pro football exhibition workouts this weekend while the American Conference tries to overhaul the National Conference in the preseason standings.

The final tests for the two most talked about quarterbacks during preseason action plus the final nine games of inter-conference action are scheduled for Saturday and Sunriay on an 11-game program. The Saturday program is highlighted by the Pittsburgh at Oakland game in which Bradshaw will get his final tune-up for the Steelers. In other games, Baltimore is at Washington, Buffalo at Green Bay, Detroit at Cincinnati, Cleveland at the New York Giants, Atlanta at Miami, San Diego at New Orleans, Kansas City at St. Louis and San Francisco at Los Angeles. The Sunday program is highlighted by New York at Dallas where Namath will get his final tune-up for the Jets in a game that will be nationally televised by CBS starting at 9 p.m., EDT.

There also is an afternoon game matching Houston at Philadelphia. In the inter-conference standings, National Conference teams have won 22 games to 18 for American Conference teams and one game has ended in a tie. Of the AFC's 18 victories, eight have been posted by the three former 'National Football League teams who joined the 10 AFL teams to form the American Conference in pro football's ab bl 3 0 10 4 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 no 0 0 0 10 0 0 0 0 0 0 Hovley cf 0 0 0 0 ROllver lb Eftloc, I 9 9 Flnlell TDavIs lb 5 12 0 Schaol 3b Bando 3b 4 110 ERodrgez RJackson rf 5 0 2 1 Severson ss TInace 2 10 0 Bunker DOreen 2b 4 0 11 Brgmeler Blue 4 0 2 0 BTavlor ph Abernthy Big League Leaders AMERICAN LEAGUE AB Pet. TERRY BRADSHAW Challenges Keep Coming By GEORGE CUNNINGHAM Constitution Sports Writer JACKSONVILLE, priorities will dominate the thinking of Coach Richie Guerin when he opens the Atlanta Hawk pre-season camp here Saturday. The dean of National Basketball Association coaches, who has compiled a record of 255-199 for six seasons at the Hawk helm, is certain to stress defense during every workout at the Bolles Academy.

This was a major weakness last season when the Hawks yielded 117.2 points a game. It is defense that wins championships, as illustrated by the 105.9 average of the New York Knicks. With 611 Walt Bellamy available from the beginning, Guerin will probably Instruct his charges to force opposing teams to funnel their offense down the middle. Bellamy is one of six veterans expected to miss the first practice. He checks in Monday while Bill Bridges, Lou and Dave Newmark arrive Saturday night.

Joe Caldwell and Jerry Chambers, the other two veterans, remain unsigned and the Hawks have no Idea when they will report. Neither man becomes a holdout until Sept. 17, which is the deadline forsign-ings and when AWOL fines begin. Absence of Caldwell is a distinct disappointment for the Hawks. They want the super swift swingman in camp so that he can begin working with highly-regarded rookie Pete Maravich.

Maravich is expected to be the greatest passer In Hawk history and Caldwell figures to be the Pistol's favorite target along with Hudson. Maravich and fellow first round draft choice John Vallely received their first rookie comeuppances upon arrival here. The management of the motel where the Hawks are housed distributed a room list which spelled the youngsters' names as "Mar-avitch" and "Vallory." Guerin is a staunch believer in rugged pre-season drills, and it paid off handsomely last season in two ways. It allowed the Hawks to get away to a fast start, despite the unexpected loss of star center Zelmo Beaty. And it was instrumental in the Hawks avoiding any crippling injuries during the regular season.
