Mrs. Nancy Hargrove Services for Mrs. Nancy Rosalynn Continued From Page 1-B When I started to puzzle about the strength and subdued passion of Rosalynn Carter which troubles people today, I was reminded of Ellen Glasgow's novel of the '30s, "Vein of Iron" a very different story, but a story about the kind of America from which Rosalynn Carter sprang. "Sometimes," character in that novel said, "I think we always live where we're born." This I think is true of the Carters, and especially of Rosalynn. She is of the rural small-town South, a South poor too much of its history, a South of hardworking people welded together by a kind of cultural isolation, forged in character by a biblical Christianity of personal morality, a South in which people are very clear about their identity.

The vein of iron is what binds a family together and to its forebears the power to do what she deems necessary for her own. Her gentleness of manner, combined with assurance and determination, are characteristic of the breed of women who helped defeated men rebuild a region. Hers is a South "where everybody knows you" and where women liberated from the more confining aspect of household and child care either by close-knit families or domestic help are traditionally full participants in family 1 business and community projects. It is not a many-layered society. Life revolves around the family and the church.

Then Rosalynn Carter went back to Plains much against her will, because she had liked her life as a Navy officer's wife away from rather overwhelming tended family in a small community she quite naturally went to work at her husband's side in the family business. She also fostered his ambition, because it was hers, too and the conviction that theirs was a destiny outside Plains. In that environment Rosalynn became private person, I thinkery inwardly keeping herself to herself. In a place where "everyone knows you," privacy and reserve are maintained by a charm of manner extended to everyone, but intimacy is kept for the very few. Jimmy Carter is sometimes effusive and unguarded; Rosalynn, never.

Her eye and her heart are single. She knows her goal; she centers on her husband's welfare. If there is a dark side to that, it lies in its intensity. She has a sense of reality rooted in the concrete, alert to dangers, attuned to her husband's needs. When he was plunged into depression by an electoral defeat, his sister, Ruth, brought him religious experience, but Rosalynn gave him Amy.

Her security lies in the life they have shared and in the patriarchal Christianity that sustains their marriage. She knows her value like the virtuous woman of the Old Testament who sets her hand to strong things so that her husband can sit "honorable in the gates." Of that woman, the Bible said, "The heart of her husband trusted in her and that is her power.
