voices but facial expressions and physical movements. Even though more Rich Little shows up in his act, Little, 38, plans to continue doing impressions as he has since he was 14 and mimicking his school teachers in Ottawa. Little says he was told by other entertainers that "no one ever made it big doing impressions and that it was time to move on. Move on to what? Dancing?" Audiences enjoy seeing portrayals of "people who are supposed to be very intelli gent, in high places, saying silly things," he says. For example, in his Jimmy Carter routine, Little smiles from ear to ear and talks in a deep Southern drawl about solar energy.

An exploratory trip to the sun is in the offing and so that astronauts aren't burned up, "we're going at night," Little, as Nixon, alternately grins and scowls, shakes his jowls, waves his arms in the air and rails about Watergate. fx CARPET CLEANED STATELINE, Nev. (AP) -Impressionist Rich Little achieved fame by copying voices and mannerisms of more than 160 movie stars, political figures and other celebrities. Now he's doing more Rich Little. Little has gradually interjected more of himself into his acts in recent years, sandwiched in between humorous impressions of actors like John Wayne, Humphrey Bo-gart and James Stewart, and political figures such as Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.

In an interview here, Little said his ambition is "to do what I'm doing right now except maybe some more dramatic things, some more Rich Little, do more acting." Little, a Canadian, launched his U.S. career with a television spot in 1964. Early in his career, "I used to do solid impressions, but people didn't know who I was. They wouldn't recognize my own voice," he realized I had to change," he said, adding that there's a "likability factor" an entertainer achieves with an audience which allows more leeway in a show. Now Little jokes, sings, ad libs, breaks out of character, and generally "I make it more of a show.

I just didn't want to stand there with a monologue. You don't headline that way." The system has worked. Little now has a 30-week yearly schedule of appearances in major clubs, hotels and theaters around the country, as well as a steady round of television appearances. He writes most of his own material and masters not only Ml 12) (Si () (17) (30) (38) (46) ToO Way Show CBSMorninf Good Motmnt TenntssetTux ,0 Ntw mfie nd Rascats (K) lone Ranger (R) 5 5 Captain (R) Mighty Mouse (R) ,30 Kanearot Deputy Dawg (R) 9" Squares Phil Merv Lucy Show (R) Seumt Heckle-Jeckle 30 Shoot for Start Oonanu Criffin love toier. TV personalities are always thinking about ratings, it seems. 7 Incidentally, Merv Griffin soon will become the latest talk show host here to be dropped. Channel 11 will put something else on in place of Merv when the fall season begins. Just what they haven't determined.

But Neil Kuvin, program director for the station, says, "Atlanta obviously is talked to death. Dinah Shore couldn't cut it, and the latest figures show Merv has dropped a point" i Alex Trubek, who has hepted Wizard of Odds, High Roll ers and Double Dare, all game shows, soon will take over the hosting spot on the $128,000 Question, another fun show. Alex does have a great rapport with game show audiences. And, beginning with the) fall season, Joe Garagiola will replace Garry Moore as host: of To Tell the Truth, just about the best of all game shows. Garry has retired after Costing the show year after year.

I'll be interested to see whether Joe plants a kiss on the cheek of Kitty Carlisle every night as she walks on stage as We'll explain the use of the most Bill Daniels, the affable and talented editorial cartoonist for Channel 2, has drawn his last artwork for the station. Don Heald, general manager of the station, announced unceremoniously that Daniels has been dropped from the payroll. At the same time, Heald explained that Channel 2 was One of only two stations in the nation which employed an editorial cartoonist to embellish newscasts. Heald said the feature simply didn't have enough viewer appeal. He said that Daniels is as capable as anyone.

But viewers simply did not react all that favorably to the car -toons. Executing the cartoons and giving them movement within the space of a few seconds obviously cramped Daniels' Heald, who has been doing on-air editorials for Channel 2, said he will continue the practice. Ed Godfrey, who came to Atlanta from Portland as the new news director for Channel 2, revealed that the station will make some changes in the structure and pace of the newscasts, beginning Sept. 5. "The newscasts will have a little different look, but as far as changes in faces, there will be none," said Godfrey.

"We will have a new theme, 'People in Touch With Peo pie, which will replace the 'Closer to Your World' theme we nave used for several years." Godfrey announced the appointment of Dick Wagner, a SO-year-old Charleston, W.Va., TV newsman, who will join the station during the first week of September. He said Wagner will become managing editor, working with reporters in the writing and production of their pieces. In Charleston, Wagner had this to say: "My move is to learn more about television news and the operations of the newsroom, and the position I will be assuming is a creative director and manager of the newsroom. I feel that the creative end of television is where my talents lie." Mike Douglas recently taped interviews with Jane Pauley and Tom Brokaw, in which he asked them who would be their dream interview. Jane suggested that Idi Amin's analyst (if such a person existed) would be a good subject, while Brokaw remarked, "It would be fascinating to reach back into history and inter view some people like Jesus Christ.

The surprise element is a major factor in broadcasting, but NBC-TV has tipped its hand far in advance on a special program on medical care, which has been scheduled for next January. The program, entitled "Medicine in America," will run three hours and will be filmed in many parts of the United States.

The economics as well as the quality of medical care will be central concerns of the special.
