6-D (The Atlanta goamnl and CONSTITUTION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER TO, 1978 clcs Rip urman ameco it mYi7 (1 i I 14 I i 1 Their first game against SC in 19 years was not a joyous occasion. Furman did nothing to help its own cause with two costly turnovers in the first half. Shortly after the kickoff, Mark Sowers of Stone Mountain, Ga, fumbled at the Furman four and the Gamecocks recovered. Rogers barrelled in from the two and Eddie Leopard booted the 7-0 point Before the quarter bad ended, Wright culminated a 75-jrard drive by sprinting five yards for another TD and a 14-0 SC turned another error into a field goal early in the second quarter. Scott Wade, a linebacker, intercepted Atlantan David Henderson on the Furman 33, and Leopard booted a 29-yard field goaL Furman got on the board late in the first half when Henderson passed 13 yards to Mike Glenn following Rodgers' fumble.

In the second half, a more confident Harper blew the game wide open with an awesome running game. Rogers blazed 27 yards for one score, and Harper hit tight end Willie Scott for five yards and a 31-7 lead. Then, in the fourth quarter, Ramsey scored on a one-yard sneak and, after Keith Potter's 35-yard fielder for Furman with 37 seconds left in the game, McKie, the walk-on, ran out the clock and the Paladins. i ill By AL THOMY Joumi-ContMutioi Stall Writer COLUMBIA, S. -James McKie is an obedient young man who follows orders.

A 5-10, 175 pound University of South Carolina running back from North Augusta, S. 0, McKie was in the game Saturday night because George Rogers and Spencer Clark, a couple of Georgians, had worn themselves out running op and down the field against Furmaa The game was secure. The Gamecocks led 38-10 and most of the 50,269 spectators had left the sweltering hotbox that was Williams-Brice Stadium. It was more a night for a steam bath than for a football game. So McKie got bis orders.

Run a dive play. Run out the dock. Son of a gun. McKie beat the clock to the end zone on a 48-yard touchdown run and made the final score 45-10. He didn't run out the clock.

He outran the clock. Offensive coordinator Jack Fligg had to smile. "Isn't that something?" he said. "And the kid's just a walk-on." The scholarship boys did pretty well too. Rogers, the Duluth, native who chose South Carolina because he wanted to "play away from home," scored touchdowns on runs of two and 27 yards and had 51 yards on 12 carries.

His Cracker running mate, Spencer Clark, didn't score, but ran eight times for 47 yards. But the big gainer of the evening in which the Gamecocks rushed for 284 yards was sophomore Johnnie Wright of Ft Meyers, who had 82 yards on 15 totes, and that included a five-yard touchdown run. From the beginning, South Carolina Head Coach Jim Car-len had said he was undecided on his quarterback for the season. He had Garry Harper, a sophomore from Hialeah, Skip Ramsey, an Atlantan and a transfer from the University of Alabama, and Steve Swinehart, a sophomore from Lancaster, Ohio. Carlen first handed the baton to Harper, and, for all intents and purposes, he won the job.

"After tonight, I'd say I'm a quarterback," said Harper. You might say that He completed five of eight passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. Ramsey hit one of three for 14 yards and conceded that Harper probably had the job "because Coach Carlen likes to go with one quarterback." Playing conservatively in the first half, Harper relaxed and directed a devastating triple option attack in the final 30 minutes when the Gamecocks scored 28 points, though Ramsey shared some of that credit "I held him (Harper) down in the first half," said Carlen. "IU take the blame for that We let him open it up after that" Carlen, who hasn't lost an opener since he came to SC four years ago, declined to gloat over the one-sided victory over Furman. "They're a tough football team," he said.

"I can't say we outcoached Furman; we out-personneled them. It was so hot (92 degrees) I figured we'd wear them down. We kept throwing those fresh backs at them." Indeed he did. He alternated running backs on almost every series and the strategy paid off as the Paladins played themselves into a state of exhaustion. 0 Jitst famu Jfasim Orcfar Yaur 1970 lease Car Now I-- ir I VW Uqm Any Mokt Butinaw or Personal CHAMBLEE NORTHWEST DECATUR METRO NORTH CENTRAL DUNWOOOY U1I1HJ mg.i.m Emm BULLDOG EXPRESS Take tiie SPECIAL FOOTBALL TRAIN TO SEE GA vs LSU SPEND THE WEEKEND IN NEW ORLEANS Unlled Presi Intwnitlonal Uavo Oct.

Steve Sloan's return to the Southeast-ern Conference was a triumphant one, but just barely. Ole Miss linebacker Eddy Householder, a junior from Morrow, recovered a fumble in the end jrone with 3:25 remaining to stop a Memphis State drive which had reached the Rebel one. and preserve a 14-7 victory, Sloan's first as Reb head coach. That drive began at the Memphis State 42 when outstanding defensive end Keith Clark recovered a fumble when Ole Miss quarterback Bobby Garner made his second poor pitch of the half. Six plays later, the Tigers had first-and-goal at the Ole Miss 10, and two plays after that the ball was on the one.

A dive by halfback Richard Locke on third down was stopped cold by Householder, and on the next play Tiger quarterback Lloyd Patterson, moving to his right, fumbled the ball just as he was about to cross the goal line and Householder was there again. Even then, Memphis State wasn't ready to call it quits. Taking over at their own 38 after Ole Miss failed to move the ball, the Tigers drove the to the Rebel 12 on a 19-yard scramble by Patterson, and 17- and 15-yard completions to Ernest Gray and Alan King. But on what proved to be the last play of the game, Rebel free safety Phil Freightman, who earlier stopped a drive with a diving interception, batted down a Patterson pass. Ole Miss took a 14-7 halftime lead, but had to come from behind to do it.

The game was barely two minutes old when Memphis State's Judson Flint did something which had never been done before: He returned a Jim Miller punt back for a touchdown. Miller, the NCAA punting champon champion last season as a sophomore, hit what for him was a short kick 39 yards and Flint streaked. 68 yards down the right side for the touchdown. Rusty Bennett's kick made it 7-0 with 12:45 to go in the first quarter. The Rebels had their first touchdown before the end of the first quarter, however, when Williams went over from the one yard line to complete a 69-yard drive.

Hoppy Langley's attempt for the point-after failed and Ole Miss still trailed 7-6. MERCEDES SPECIALTY WE ARE NOW PAINTING URGE TRUCKS CAU FOR INK). FINISH ONLY 20" EXTRA! ii I II Name, Nam. I sr i prawn lb. -i gmSriiai Wmj The Rebs took the lead on their next possession, though, marching 47 yards with Williams taking the ball in from the four.

Garner passed to Williams for the two-point conversion and the score remained 14-7 until halftime. Ole Miss had a another touchdown called back because of a motion penalty and on fourth-and-goal from the six, Langley missed a 24-yard field goal attempt. Langley missed four makeable field goals against Memphis State last season, but the Rebels still managed to win 7-3. After an ultra successful freshman season, he slumped last year, making 19 of 22 points-after, but only nine of 20 field goal attempts. Other than the punt return, Memphis State threatened to score only once in the first half.

On the Tigers' first play from scrimmage, Locke went 40 yards up the middle to the Ole Miss 31 yard line, but the penetration froze there and a 48-yard field goal attempt by Bennett was short and off to the left. Statistically, Ole Miss had a big edge in the first half 170 -74 in rushing yardage, 74-23 in passing yardage, 13-5 in first downs. Langley cost Ole Miss yet more points in the third quarter when he missed a 23-yard field goal attempt. The Rebels had driven from their own 30 yardline to the Memphis State 10 when Garner made his first mistake of the game a bad pitch which cost the Rebs 11 yards back to the 21 yardline. A pass to split end Curtis Weathers on third down made it to the six, and on fourth down Langley missed the kick.

Memphis State, showing signs of life on offense, tootc over and drove all the way to the Ole Miss 44, but a 15-yard holding penalty moved the Tigers back to their own 41. two plays later, Freightman, a sophomore with all-star potential, intercepted a Patterson pass at the 15 yard line. Early in the quarter, Memphis State got close enough for Bennett to attempt a 46-yard field goal, but like his first-half effort, it was short. That opportunity came after Ole Miss' Williams fumbled at the MSU 29 yard line. MC.

N.C. State safety Woodrow Wilson added a touchdown with 3:21 remaining when he intercepted a pass from third-string quarterback Henry Travathan and took it 86 yards for the scroe.
