4- O.D HIE ATLAMA CONSTITUTION, Marth 28, 1972 AIR'S RACE FOR SOLVENCY McCarthy Out With Buffalo Track 'Turning Around' BUFFALO (-John McCarthy was fired Monday from his post as coach of the Buffalo Braves, the National Basketball Association club announced. A terse statement released I ivfl Ai. 111 if Donovan said, "We are taking our time on finding a successor." He said he and Snyder would leave Buffalo Tuesday for a week or more but did not disclose where they were going. He said McCarthy had been offered his former position as head scout but McCarthy had not given an answer. McCarthy served as scout until the Braves lost their opening game of the season.

At that point, Schayes was dismissed and McCarthy was promoted to the top job. by Braves' owner Paul Snyder and general manager Edward Donovan said they had "elected not to extend the contract" of McCarthy for the 1972-73 season. His responsibilities as head coach were ended as of Monday, the statement added. McCarthy has guided the Braves since last fall when he replaced Dolph Shayes. The Braves finished in last place in- the NBA's Atlantic Division, winning only 22 of their 82 games.

No successor to McCarthy was announced. course, there was the interest by the court. Then, Allison charged that the Glen Wood Mercury driven by A. J. Foyt was "illegal." NASCAR inspectors rejected this charge.

They cleared the first five finishers in a post-race tear-down. The interlude of doubt didn't bother car owner Junior Johnson. He laughed and insisted he would laugh all the way to tlhe bank with his estimated $20,000, including lap money. It was a sweet payoff, the first super speedway first for Chevy since 1963. Chief mechanic Herb Nab was beside himself savoring the sweet nectar of victory after the race and he wanted to make it pointedly clear what he thought of the clean-cut Allison, a young man who starts each race day by attending Mass.

"Allison is the best driver I've ever been connected with," said Nab. "Better than Fred Lorenzen and better than Lee Roy Yarbrough, better than anyone we've worked with. He's a smart driver." In Monday retrospect, it was clear why Allison beat both A. J. Foyt and Bobby Isaac to the checkers.

Handling problems forced both Foyt and Isaac to run high. Allison cruised low whenever he pleased and that is tihe short way around the track. When he whipped past Foyt on the back-stretch, he went low. Foyt was having trouble keeping his car on the track. And.

oh yes, it was discovered that Glen Wood is a reluctant Sunday racer. "My pit crew has been with me 10 years the same guys but last year one of my brothers joined the Holiness Church and quit," he said. "He is now in Jerusalem for Easter. To be truthful, I really don't feel right racing on Sunday but if you race, it has to be on Sunday." That's the way it goes, Glen, only on Sundays. By AL THO.MY The sun shone Sunday.

No sun Monday. But Stacey W. Cotton, court appointed trustee of Atlanta International Raceway, saw the silver lining. Or was it gold? "I feel a lot better today than I did day before yesterday," Cotton said. In his position.

Cotton could not afford to be overly optimistic about the financial plight of AIR, operating under Corporate Reorganization under Chapter Ten of the Federal Bankruptcy Act for more than a year. The track is not yet out of the red. But it is well on its way. "Obviously, even with a good crowd as we had and with as good a race as we had, we wouldn't have made enough money to pay off everybody," said Cotton. It is thought that the track owes in excess of $1 million.

There is money in the bank, but nothing approaching a million. Cotton continued. "But we made money and I'm confident it resulted in a significant stride in turning the company around." The crowd was estimated at 70,000, but the official count is expected to be in the 50s. From here, said Cotton, there are two basic steps. "First, we'll start the wheels turning for the July 23rd Dixie 500, and, next, devote a good deal of attention to reorganization.

I hate to be vague, in terms of what to do, but we're pretty much open. Certainly we'll try to interest new money. The success we've had last year and this show that this is a viable company which can make money. "In summarizing, in terms of prospects for reorganization, we're in good shape. The race doesn't solve or satisfy problems of financial conditions of the company, but we've taken a stride in that direction." Legality was the theme of Sunday's race, won by Bobbv Allison in the Junior Johnson Chevrolet.
