1 NCAA SETS 2-YEAR SENTENCE Arthur Gamecocks Go On Probation DALEY Johnny Keane (c1M7) New Turk Timet Newt Service NEW YORK-At least Johnny Keane had one brief taste of glory when he skillfully directed the St. Louis Cardinals to World Series victory over the New York Yankees in 1964. He deserved far more than that because he was an admirable little guy who brought an extra touch of class to baseball. But the fates were never too kind to him with that one exception, of course and now a heart attack has shockingly snatched him away at the age of 55. There is no way to rationalize a death.

But his legion of friends can take comfort in the fact that Johnny, torn apart by inner turmoil and doubts after his dismissal as Yankee which was said to be identical. The Council cited the violations by South Carolina on financial aid: 1, Dtring the year 19G5-66 Marvin Bass, the University's director of athletics and head football coach, provided three student athletes, all ineligible to receive financial aid, with cash, meal tickets and books from sources under his control. 2, During the same period and continuing through the first semester of the 1966-67 college year, the educational expenses of a student athlete were paid by a corporation upon which the student athlete was neither naturally nor legally dependent. 3, The financial aid to student athletes was not administered by the university's regular committee oi agency responsible for awarding scholarships or grants, in aid. The council also said that in the school year of 1965-66 Bass, with the assistance of the then business manager of athletics, created a secret fund reportedly to be used for entertainment purposes, including entertainment of high school coaches.

Bass, who held a dual capacity of athletic director and head football coach at South Carolina, was succeeded in 1966 by Paul Dictzcl, formerly of Army. The council said seven athletes wore involved in the in-Continued on Page 36, Column 1 sity, contrary to regular published entrance requirements of the institution. The athlete was not identified, but it was assumed the reference was to Mike Grosso, a star basketball player who was ruled ineligible by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Grosso's ineligibility has been the center of a heated controversy in the conference with South Carolina appealing the conference ruling to the NCAA. In effect, the NCAA council reconfirmed the conference action.

Grosso is a sophomore from Raritan, N.J., who reportedly failed on one test for entrance but later passed a second test season football or basketball games, including tournaments. It also prohibits the Gamecocks from participating in any television program subject to control of the NCAA, meaning they won't be in any televised football games. Events of the past season vindicated him completely and restored to his reputation all the luster that Yankee failure had tarnished because it became obvious no blame could accrue to Johnny for the collapse. When Keane was summarily relieved of his command, he was replaced by the players' pet, Ralph Houk, "The best manager I ever played for." So said the Yankee athletes. In their initial enthusiasm they went crazy for a fortnight and won regularly for Houk. But then they reverted to type as their reduced skills dumped the ball club into last place, the worst finish in Bomber history.

Johnny rated more than he ever received from a whimsical and ungracious dame fortune.

A slick fielding shortstop, he was heading toward the major leagues when a bean ball fractured his skull, almost killing him. If nothing else, it shattered his hopes of making the big time as a player so he decided to make it as a manager. Lane Showed Keane How to Make It It was a dreadfully long haul for this dedicated man. Year after year he was recognized as "the best manager in the minors." But the call to the majors never came. Finally Frank Lane, the front office boss of the Cardinals, showed Johnny how.

"Why do you bury yourself in the bush leagues?" said Lane. "I feel that my ability will be recognized some day," said Johnny, precise and crisp as always. "You're going at it wrong," said Lane. "You've turned down every major league coaching job that's been offered. Hardly anyone up here even knows you exist.

You have to expose yourself. You have to be seen and known. The only way is to become a big league coach." So Keane, a member of the Cardinal organization all his life, became a lieutenant to Solly Hemus in 1959. In mid-season of 1961 Hemus got the ax and Johnny was finally a big league manager. By adroit manipulation he squeezed out a second place finish in 1963 and raised hopes high for 1964.

At mid-season, though, everything was going wrong. The distraught owner, Gussie Busch, forced the dismissal of Bing Devine, the general manager. It even was whispered that Gussie already had come to terms with Leo Durocher as Keane's successor for the following season. This news didn't upset Johnny as much as the departure of his friend and sponsor, Devine. Then a strange sequence of events intruded to affect the future of the intensely loyal team.

Cardinal Rally Saved Day for Johnny He rallied the Cardinals and they won the pennant. Just as unexpectedly, they upset the Yankees in the World Series. A lesser man would have gloated at the untenable position in which he had placed his boss, demanding a long-term, high-priced contract in vengeful retribution. And gotten it too. But Johnny was above such petty vanity.

His principles were beyond price. When he met with Busch for the expected contract renewal Johnny gave Gussie the shock of his life. "I'm quitting," said the quiet little manager. In a switch that was just as bizarre, he immediately succeeded the suddenly ousted Yogi Berra as Yankee skipper. Unforgettable was Johnny's reaction to first sight of his troops at Fort Lauderdale the next spring.

"I never had so many good ball players," he said, awe in his voice. He was wrong. He was looking at hollow shells. He really never got to know the Yankees. Nor did they get to know him.

Unlike the Cardinals, most of whom he had watched advance from the minors, the Bombers were strangers of almost demigod stature. Not until too late did rapport finally come. Mickey Mantle said he was ashamed of the way he'd let Johnny down and all the other Yankees expressed kindred sympathetic sentiments. It came as a bittersweet solace to Keane at the low point of his career. Johnny was such a nice man.

Decency and wholesomeness shone out from those blue eyes, the mirror of his soul. His gentle nobility and strong force of character lifted him above the ordinary level. He was a rare one. After Logan's late interception, Unitas tut Willie Richardson with a 1 13-yard pass to the Eagle 18, and Matte picked up 10 in a running play to the eight.
