Fischer took it and gasps of surprise swept through the auditorium. Had Spassky miscalculated? Or had Fischer mis-. judged, giving up two pawns for the bishop and a tenuous position? It will not be known until Fischer talks whether he miscalculated or he decided to take Spassky's dare, the devil take the consequences. Even if Fischer does lose the first game, he has achieved the respect of every player here by rising to Spassky's dare and throwing away a sure draw for a speculative attack. REYKJAVIK, Iceland (NYT) -The first game of the Bobby Fischer-Boris Spassky match for the world chess championship was adjourned Tuesday night after 40 moves.

Although the consensus of experts gave the Soviet champion the edge, it was felt that his American challenger still had good drawing chances. The game is to be resumed at 5 p.m. (1 p.m. EST.) Wednesday. The game started quietly enough.

Spassky opened as many had expected, with P-Q4, and Fischer adopted a Ni-moz-Indian defense. This is a standard defense, and for a while it seemed as though both players were heading toward a routine draw. Then, on the 29th move, the game exploded. They are now acknowledging that their troops are planning to bypass the city for the time being. The apparent strategy, according to themilitary sources here, is to surround SAIGON (NYT) Reliable military sources here and on the northern front reported Tuesday that the South Vietnamese were not going to try to recapture the well-defended provincial capital of Quang Tri at this time. Rather, they said, Saigon's forces are going to try to isolate the city and hope it falls by attrition.

South Vietnamese officials have dropped the claims they made all last weekof having recaptured all or most of the city, claims that were contradicted by reports from the Elm Disease Fight Urged By Fowler The aldermanic Parks Committee Tuesday heard a plea from A'd. Wyche Fowler to save more than 100 of the city's elm trees from Ducth Elm Disease. Fowler, who said he had received complaints from sev livery of more mail to the prisoners and to assure that the North Vietnamese treat the prisoners in a humanitarian way according to the provisions of the Geneva convention. The Vatican communique, one of the longest ever issued after a papal audience with a government official, said: "Mr. Rogers stated the continuing desire of the United States for a prompt, ated solution to the Vietnam conflict and thanked the Holy Father for his tireless efforts on behalf of peace in that region and the whole world." At his news conference, Rogers said he was generally hopeful that the reopening of the peace talks might bring some movement by the North Vietnamese toward a settlement of the war.

He gave these reasons: The North Vietnamese offensive has proved unsuccessful. The U.S. bombing of the North has been "unusually effective." President Nixon's trips to Moscow and Peking have produced a better climate for peace in the world. The continuation of the war. serves "nobody's interest." Rome was Rogers' last stop on a tour of nine nations.

ROME (AP) Secretary of State William P. Rogers said Tuesday that the Vatican has tried to obtain the release of U.S. prisoners of war in North Vietnam but "so far to no avail." There have been hints that -the Vatican has initiated contacts on behalf of the American prisoners, but this was believed the first time an American official has drawn a clear picture of the Holy See's efforts. Rogers spoke at a news conference in Rome shortly after meeting with Pope Paul VI for an hour in private audience at the Vatican. On the eve of the resumption of the Paris peace talks, the Pope told Rogers he hoped the negotiations would lead to a "realistic and final" agreement "according to the just wishes of all the Vietnamese people." The Pope has often deplored the Vietnam war, but lately has spoken out more forcefully on what he calls that "intolerable and bloody war." Rogers said the Vatican attempted "directly or indirectly" to try to arrange an exchange of prisoners of war; to obtain a report from the North Vietnamese about the missing; to assure the de Freighter Lists in Harbor NHA TRANG, South Vietnam Listing to one side, a British to a U.S.

Trying to take the town now in one determined charge, the sources say, would mean bitter house-to-house fighting and heavy casualties.

The reasoning is that even if the enemy troops do not choose to pull out of Quang Tri now, the South Vietnamese force can render them helpless by pushing north and cutting off supplies and reinforcements. One high South Vietnamese military source said: "Seizing the city itself is useless if you do not clean and clear the terrain around." More South Vietnamese troops were deployed in this strategy of isolating Quang Tri. A battalion of about 600 marines was lifted by American Marine helicopters into an area northeast of the town. During this operation, one American helicopter was brought down by ground fire two: rescue helicopters that went in to try to extract the crew also went down. Few details were available, but reports indicated that all the crewmen had been rescued.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) -Patriarch Athenagoras was buried on Tuesday at a funeral attended by Protestant and Roman Catholic leaders.

Bui a dispute broke out between Greece and Turkey over the method of electing his successor. Athenagoras, who was enthroned as spiritual leader of the 250 million members of the Eastern Orthodox Church in 1948, became a leading figure in the past 10 years as he strove with Pope Paul VI to unite the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. He died Friday at the age of 86. Ambassador John Tsounis of Greece filed a protest with Premier Ferit Melen against conditions set by Gov. Vefa Poyraz of Istanbul.

Poyraz said the elections must be held in the presence of a notary public and he has a right to veto the proposed successor. The 12 bishops of the par- eral of his neighbors that trees in the city were infected with the cVsease, was told that no trees had been treated against the beetles which carry the disease for more than a yearl vppt m'a According to 'Fowler, last year the Parks Committee voted to use Methoxychlor instead of DDT to fight Dutch Elm Disease because of DDT's damaging side effects. But the new drug was more expensive than DDT, and an extra appropriation of $2,000 was needed. The appropriation request apparently died quietly in the Finance Committee, Fowler said. The Parks Committee Tuesday instructed the city to find out how much money would be needed to buy the needed chemicals to treat 'the trees.

The Greek ambassador asked that restrictions be relaxed in order to permit the archbishops to exercise their authority without any undue pressure. Greece, which is predominantly Orthodox in religion, is directly concerned with who becomes the leader of Eastern Orthodoxy. As the last mourners left the cemetery, it appeared almost certain that the Turkish government would not relinquish its right to decide who the next patriarch would be. Since the patriarchate is regarded as a Turkish institution here, it seemed unlikely that the government would approve of another dynamic figure such as Athenagoras. The survey, although completed in April, was not released until Tuesday, several days after a congressional hearing here into the use of narcotics by school-age children. Conducted by the Dade County School Board, it concluded that drug abuse in Miami area schools "is a widespread problem that is growing worse." A similar conclusion was. reached last week by dozens of witnesses young former addicts, parents of addicts and drug experts who testified during a three-day drug abuse hearing conducted by Rep. Claude Pepper, D-Fla. After the hearings, Pepper chided school officials for failing to recognize the extent of drug abuse among students and deal effectively with the problem.

The school board survey revealed educators felt the drug abuse programs in the schools were the least effective deterrent and that family problems are the most common cause of drug abuse by students. Peer group pressures and the need for acceptance were rated by the survey as the second most common reason that students become habitual drug users. 4 NOAA, U.S. Dept. of Commerce 80 (II i i' i in i i i i i uv Miss Your Paper?
