At 40, the former Vito Fari-nola of Brooklyn is alive and swinging as never before.

His roller-coaster showbiz career certainly has many precedents, but the Vic Damone story is one of the more 6 whole h'. they didn't faint in the fashion of the Sinatra era, still let the emotions show. Damone, introducing Miss Scott, recalled the days wnen tney both worked at tne New York Paramount. Hazel was starring in tne snow, witn Woody Herman's band; Vic was an usher. They have been trienos ever since; recently Damone brought her into the Baha'I circle.

Last Sunday sue was at his home to attend a "fireside," the Baha'I equivalent of a prayer meeting. Lamone, deeply im-toersed in hs adopted re-leglon, treasures a set of Baha'I books once owned by Carole Lombard. His resurgence has produced very. tangible He has a new, $700,000 contract with Frontier (40 weeks in 1969-70 at $17,500 dollars a week). Along with this not unstable fiscal backbone he has TV, RCA records, and his inventions, several of which have been patented.

His latest idea is a mechanical device to prevent weary drivers from falling asleep at the wheel. Clearly Along with a new confidence and peace of mind, Damone's metamorphosis from arrogant youth into mature, adjusted adult has helped his singing conspicuously. Always a fine craftsman, he is now a buoyantly convincing and often deeply moving performer. One evening at the Las Vegas Frontier the crowd included not only Frank but also daughter Nancy, Sammy Davis, Jilly Rizzo, Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes, Damone's musical director, Joe Par-nello, had provided him with a superb band made up of the strip's best jazz-oriented musicians. After a long set, a celebrity-introducing ritual and a few onstage moments with Frank and Sammy, Damone went into his finale, Bernstein's "Somewhere" from "West Side Story," investing it with all the power and beauty in his rediscovered soul.

Hazel Scott, a frequent yisi-: tor (she had just ended her own stint at the Flamingo), was overwrought, running in mascara down to her shoulders. Other women, though IfcJ. Turning to Vie Damone, he added, "you're a beautiful person. I love you." Frank Sinatra was an appropriate source for a compliment of this magnitude.

In some respects his own vicissitudes paralleled those of Damone. In 1952, the voice had lost its kinship with the world; his career had reached its nadir. It took "From here to Eternity" to bring it back. Just a decade Vic Damone was at a similarly low ebb. In the trade, grudging respect for his talent was coupled with hostility toward an attitude many found cocky and surly.

Covering up his insecurities with excessive bravado, he became a heavy gambler and a sucker for the sauce. He had gone through a divorce and, as a Catholic, had begun to think of himself as an unperson. The turning point would sound like a reject movie scenario if it were not totally factual. "I found God," he says, "and through God I found myself as a person. A good friend introduced me to the Baha' I faith.

"The Bahai's don't believe there is any one true prophet. It's an all-encompassing faith. We feel that religion as one great unifying brotherhood can help establish world peace. In addition, says MPAA, tens of thousands more General Federation of Women's Clubs members in 19 states have received informative materials about film. These were distributed at the request of state Federation leaders to all clubs in their states, in cooperation with PMAA's "Movies and You" program.
