The session will open with the National Anthem a customand with a presentation of resolutions and the platform before the actual polling of the delegates takes place.

The nominations will follow. There are four candidates and a number of favorite sons to be placed in nomination. The inevitable demonstrations likely will take place despite a ban imposed at this convention. Among the possibilities for unscheduled events is an appearance by President Johnson on behalf of his choice, Vice President Humphrey. Chet Huntley and David Brinkley will anchor the NBC-TV "smotherage" and Walter Cronkite will hold down the key spot for CBS-TV.

Gore Vidal and William H. Buckley will represent ABC-TV with their "wrap-up" commentary, starting at 9:30 p.m. ABC-TV, which claims to have grabbed off the lion's share of the TV audience during the Republican convention by offering its entertainment schedule from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. daily, while the other networks went gavel-to-gavel with convention "smother-age," muffed a golden opportunity Wednesday night to deliver the TV audience from the tedium of the Democratic pow-wow. Instead of offering a film such as "Hush Hush, Sweet Charlotte," Which, incidentally, will be offered next Wednesday, in the old movie slot, ABC-TV chose, instead, to show Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii," which is a dog.

In case you simply can't resist it, "Blue Hawaii" is all about a young Army veteran recently discharged who is slated to take over the family business in Hawaii. Instead, he takes up with a tourist agency and whiles away most of his time under the Hawaiian moon, romancing Only 350 copies of the book, a paperback edition, have been printed for the exclusive use of the CBS staff. The volume also contains a rundown on the candidates, convention officers and the various organizations planning protest demonstrations this week in Chicago. The private printing project was headed by Frank Manit-zas, deputy director of the Special Events Unit of CBS News and Martin Pliffner, manager of the network's editorial operation. "One thing missing at the conventions was that nobody knew enough about the delegates," Manitzas said in a telephone interview from Chicago.

"So we organized a task force of 20 workers who tele ARETHA FRANKLIN Puts 'Soul' In Anthem pretty young things on the beaches of the glamorous island. The scenery is too much and the songs are fair. But plotwise it leaves much to be desired. CONVENTIONWISE, Democrats are expected to nominate Vice President Hubert Humphrey as its 1968 standard bearer before the completion of the session, although with all the nominating speeches and seconding of fact, when the song was adopted as the National Anthem it was stipulated by the Congress that it would "be played as written" with no changes in tempo or lyrics. Miss Franklin, one of the leading exponents of "soul" music drastically altered the tempo and even forgot some of the lyrics.

Her rendition was reminiscent of a time years ago when Cab Calloway, then the exponent of "Hi-de-ho" music, offered a jazz version of the National Anthem on radio. He was censured by the musician's union and other groups. The National Anthem is regarded as one of the most dif- -ficult selections in musicdom to sing or to play. Bob Van Camp, musical director of WSB-Radio, describes the Anthem as "beyond the range of most singers." Van Camp said the music for the anthem was written by Ralph Tomlinson, in praise of a Greek poet, Anacreon, and was originally titled "Ana-creon In Heaven." Anacreon, according to Bob, "died fittingly at age 85, when he choked on a grape seed." The music was first performed in a Tavern on the Strand in England, where, Bob said, "one had to get plastered before he could sing the music." Francis Scott Key is said to have been inspired to write the lyrics for the Anthem while watching the American flag from a boat. Miss Franklin is not the first entertainer to muff the lyrics. Robert Merrill, the Metropolitan opera star, Robert Goulet and others, appearing at such functions as the World Series at chamiponship fights and at major conventions, have suddenly found themselves without the lyrics to the Athem.

The appearance of Miss Franklin stirred more controversy than even the seating of the Georgia delegations. It is unlikely that her rendition of the Anthem will be soon Love Is Many Newlywed S.
