As I See It I 1' I BjMiih II Channel 36 Goes on Air Mere Today By PAUL JONES Atlanta's seventh television station, Channel 36-WATL-TV, begins its broadcast activity at "1 11:30 a.m. Sat urday. The first 30-minutes of tele-casting will consist of dedicator ceremonies at the station's new studios on i arcliff Road, immediately in front of 's 1,174 foot candela- Paul Janet the station's bra tower. i mmmmml mKHmSij 'i 4 closes out Saturday's broadcast day. But, for kicks, here are some of the highlights of the week, as we see them: Movie of the Week, at 7 p.m. Sunday, is "Broken Arrow," starring James Stewart and Jeff Chandler. The David Susskind show at 10 p.m. Sunday is one of the most intriguing of the "talk" shows largely because of Susskind's own abrasive personality. The "For Ladies Only" movie series, to be seen at 1 p.m.

daily, has an oldie in "Tell It to the Judge," with Rosalind Russell and Gig Young, on Monday. Reruns of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone will be presented at 11 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday, returning some of the best TV drama of the past decade to the little screen. Joey Bishop will be seen nightly, at 11:30 p.m. in his live show from the West Coast.

A DAILY pattern of game shows in the 7:30 to 9 p.m. slot, Monday-Friday, will find such as Beat the Clock, Candid Camera and Game Show listed. The station will offer a movie at 9 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday, with some films being repeated from Saturday and Sunday nights. In addition, the station will offer a 90 second news capsule on the hour, starting at 7 p.m.

and concluding with the 11 p.m. slot. THE AFTERNOON schedule will be filled with such goodies as Rocket Robin Hood, Marine Boy, Speed Racer, Superman and Lost In Space, all aimed at the kiddies. WATL-TV has signed Don Kennedy, known to the youngsters, as "Officer Don" to preside over Officer Don's Clubhouse daily at 4:30 p.m. Kennedy long was associated with WSB-TV, where his "Officer Don" character becaime highly popular.

Recently WSB- Immediately following at 12 noon, the station will begin its 12-hour broadcast day with a variety of entertainment and public affairs programs, climaxed by "For Adults Only," a two-hour motion picture presentation, starting at 10 p.m. The "adult" film for Saturday Is "Nothing But a Man," which stars Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln. The story is about a Negro, driven by pride and hatred for oppressive ways of whites, who takes out his hostility and frustrations on his wife. The station has been careful to point out that they want to guard against any connotation that would imply the "adult" movies are in any way immoral. A spokesman for the station said any suggestive or objectional material in any film would be edited out "Adult" obviously refers to films with more serious themes.

The first entertainment program, at 12 noon, is Steel Peer Swings, which features Ed Hurst as host and a number of pop artists performing. The early part of the day will be devoted to a Western at 1 p.m., an old movie at 3 p.m., Billy Walker's Country Carnival at 5 p.m., the Judy Lynn Show at 5:30 p.m., re-runs of Combat at 6 p.m., followed by Outer Limits, The Invaders and, at 9 p.m., Playboy After Dark, featuring Hugh Hefner in his lavish penthouse in Chicago. He will interview various celebrities. THE STATION has, for the past several days, run a test-pattern with satisfactory results.

Viewers in most areas of the city reported getting a good, clear picture, which means that this ultra-high-frequency station has a good chance to become a contender in the commercial television field in Atlanta. OIlTer Fat boon "Sounds of Summer," the first major television production with major stars to be taped here, will be colorcast at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on Channel 11. Featured in the hour show are Pat Boone, Tiny Tim, Fannie Flagg, Oliver, The Winstoms, the Gospel Crusaders and Liz Getz. The artists were taped in different segments here during visits to the city.

The segments were united by the Channel 11 staff. Boone, who has been here several times in recent months, will sing his two newest releases, "July, You're a Woman" and "What's Gnawing at Me?" Miss Flagg, the Birmingham girl who says she always won the "Miss Congeniality? title in beauty contests because she bribed the other girls, will do her impression of "Miss Susie Sweetwater," a small town society editor. Tiny Tim will provide reminiscences of his early idols; a 3 V1' A AW poem written to Elizabeth Taylor when he first saw her at the St. Regis Hotel in 1947 and his favorite sayings "Avoid rough edges. It's always nice to stay smooth" and "Don't be discouraged.
