spons THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION Page 29, Tuesday, July 23, 1963 OUTLAM "jUr Sports Editor i SONNY'S AT BAT FLOYD ON DECK CASSWS READY AND WAITING A TV Rc-Run Floyd Patterson, masquerading as a heavyweight champion until Sonny Listen came along, was unmasked again by the Big Bad Bear Monday night in Las Vegas. Only difference between the first mismatch and the rematch was four seconds and one punch in round one. It took Liston 2:10 of the first round this outing, but Patterson did land one solid blow. Before anyone could comment that Liston had slipped, he explained why he worked four seconds longer in if 'fLA; I'TN" i Vegas than he did in Chicago last September. In Nevada an eight count is mandatory for knockdowns, and Patterson went down twice before the final count reached 10.

Liston correctly figured that the referee's math took time. Thus, Patterson once again needed his famous disguise. He wore it last September to escape the public, and he brought the fake whiskers to Vegas. Unfortunately, Patterson could not conceal the fact that he doesn't belong in the same ring with Sonny Liston. Floyd was game, and that's about all you can say for him, other than he should retire.

Liston promises to be on the scene for many years to come, and there's no longer any room at the top for Patterson. In one minute the hulking Liston had clubbed Patterson to the deck. It was obvious the dice would roll craps for Floyd.

Liston had made his point coming out. The handwriting was on the screen at the city auditorium here and in more than a hundred theaters elsewhere. All that was in doubt was the eventual time of the knockout. Forty seconds later Patterson was on the canvas again. Liston blasted away once more and the final shot was a left hook at 2:10.

The clock had run out on Patterson. Cassius Provided Comedy Relief Now it was time for Cassius Clay to start talking again. And you must give the Louisville Lip tremendous credit. Power went off in the theater at 10:45 p.m. EDT and could not be restored in time for Liston's first round knockout victory. A near riot resulted when the angry fans demanded their money be returned.

The theater management said later the estimated 2,000 patrons could obtain refunds by turning in their ticket stubs. A spokesman said the blackout was caused by a telephone line failure. It was that simple. If there was any doubt about his superiority none longer remains. Patterson proved he was not paralyzed by fear because he got up twice and was struggling gamely the third time. If he had, it would have made absolutely no Continued on Page 31 man with the poker face. Pulling the trigger on that ponderous right hand punch he owns, Liston sent Patterson floundering to the deck once more.

This time he popped up at three or four but had to take the automatic eight once more. It was only a matter of time before this had to end. Liston swarmed after Floyd and gunned down the 28-year-old Scarsdale1, Floyd, grimly determined to make up for his humiliation in Chicago, took one long desperate gamble with a right hand punch after he had been floored the first time. It rattled off Liston's chin like dice bouncing off a crap table on the nearby Strip. An unfortunately slim crowd of 1,509 witnesses legitimately will be qualified to relate about this one, but it was the kind of accomplishment others will claim to have seen.

The 43-year-old left-hander lost his perfect game in the bottom of the seventh of the seven-inning game. With two out, he faced lethal Bubba Morton and, overly careful perhaps, fed four straight balls. None of them were particularly close. Then, with the slim Canadian gallery sensing that perhaps the walk was unnerving and that this was a rally, Olivo came back with a fast ball which Maple Leaf clean-up hitter Jim Coker lofted harmlessly to right centerfield. Routine as it appeared, Johnny Lewis, Howie Bedell, and Phil A EH Booed when he entered the ring man could sell Clay against the champ.

And that's what Cassius already has achieved. They're already talking about a million-dollar gate in Philadelphia in September. Before Liston stamped finis on the Patterson career, Clay was busily engaged on a script for the next "TV spectacular." Introduced before the "fight," Clay shook hands with Patterson, glanced at Liston, threw up his hands and leaped through the ropes. Since the fight was a farce, (lay was soon back for an encore. As a boxer, Clay leaves much to be desired but, as a comedian, he's superb.

He was the star of the show without striking a lick. He did strike one serious chord while re-playing his worn tune about Liston. "The fight was a disgrace," Clay said between shouts that he is the greatest and tired of talking and ready for Liston. "I want him tonight," Clay said. Of course, Cassius was aware that one round was all Liston intended to fight on the particular evening.

And once again the thought dawned that Liston would have had 14 rounds to work on Clay if he had scheduled the two top contenders in one night. In fact, Liston probably could beat Patterson and Clay at the same time. Asked if he wanted to fight Clay, Liston inquired: "Is he still around?" Clay is very much around, but he probably won't go more than a round with Sonny. Liston now has won 28 in a row, 35 of 36 bouts, and he has never been knocked off his feet. The Masquerade Is Over for Floyd True, Liston has encountered mediocre opposition in the ring.

Watching Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano during pre-fight introductions, you wished that you could see one, of them at their peak in there with the Big Bad Bear. Liston may be a great fighter, but against the current crop of heavyweights he'll never have a fair chance to prove. A few rounds against a Louis or -a Marciano would quickly determine Sonny's proper niche in ring history. There's no doubt that he now stands in a class by himself. Other than the contract clause, there was no reason for a rematch with Patterson.

The bout was postponed three times; it never should have been staged. Patterson's camp proudly pointed out that he had come back to knock out Ingemar Johansson. But Liston had parried that remark by stating that he could have whipped Johansson while he was fighting golden gloves matches. And he probably could have. On the screen it was apparent that Liston's punches were numbing Patterson.

But Floyd must have been clobbered even harder than the camera revealed. After the fight he was talking about fighting his way back into the picture and gaining a third match with Liston. Two Liston-Patterson fights are sufficient for one century. Floyd should store away his disguise, now that he has been unmasked twice in 10 months, and retire. As Liston pondered before the fight, his future isn't very bright! "After I knock out Patterson and Loudmouth, where am I going? Whom I going to fight?" As the auditorium began to fill an hour-and-a-half before fight time, it was obvious that this was an audience sympathetic toward Patterson. The atmosphere was one of a crowd come to watch the execution of a respected friend.

A few hoots of derision were directed at Patterson, but Continued on Page 30 greatest and the most beautiful, shook hands with Patterson, started across the ring to Liston, then thought better of it and left without so much as a "how-do-you-do." I guess he'll try to duck me now because he hasn't got enough experience." These remarks and the succinct comments of an unruffled Liston after the fight seemed to be the part of the one-act show the folks enjoyed most.

While Cassius raged, the smoke-filled auditorium rocked with the laughter of derision, for most obviously held little hope for the Louisville bigmouth. Questioned after the few moments of unlimbering punches against Patterson's noggin, Liston admitted that it wasn't much of a fight and that the whole affair was disappointing to him.
