Eddie Siegler's placement gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 13:39 left before half.

Hart's passing and Jones' running quickly tied the game, but it was a halfback pass from Brad Evans to tight end Dan Phelan that produced the five-yard touchdown. Dave Pugh's kick made it 7-7 with 8:50 remaining before half. Clemson, behind four Ken-drick completions, then moved deep into Duke territory. The drive stalled at the 13-yard line, and Siegler booted a 30-yard field goal with 2:39 left to send Clemson to the halftime dressing room with a 10-7 lead. It was the last time Clemson fans would have much to cheer about.

HART HIT Jones with the scoring pass midway the third quarter, and wrapped up matters early in the last quarter by running for a five-yard touchdown on a keeper. There was one play that hurt Clemson badly, and may have changed the complexion of the game. It happened with Clemson still leanding, 10-7, and on a sustained march early in the third quarter. Kendrick tossed a swing pas to back Ray Yau-ger, who dropped it and walked away digustedly. Duke pounced on it and officials ruled it a lateral pass.

Clemson fans booed. Duke coach Tom Harp called it, "A big play for us." It may have been even a bigger one for Clemson. By RON HUDSPETH Atlanta Joonul-Conilltatlon Staff Writer CLEMSON, S.C. Sonny Jurgensen, Norm Snead and Roman Gabriel pretty fast company if you're considering tossing a football. But not for Leo Hart.

Hart is already the Atlantic Coast Conference all-time passing champion, surpassing those three rather famous ACC graduates. Saturday afternoon, Hart proved it to Clemson and 30,000 fans in Death Valley. The classy 6-3, 195-pounder pitched Duke to a 21-10 victory over the hustling Tigers. Step aside Archie Manning- Vera Studdard, Pat Terry a 1 and John Reaves-Carlos Alvarez. Some might chuckle at ACC football, but no one laughs when Hart throws and Wes Chesson catches.

HART, COOL and accurate, hit 26 of 36 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown. He also ran a keeper for a five-yard score. Chesson, a 6-2, 195-pound flanker who is the all-time ACC pass catching champ, caught 13 Hart tosses for 149 yards. No telling how much Hart-to-Chesson would have chalked up had not a bruiser named Steve Jones been around. But Hart could hardly keep such a talented sophomore idle.

Jones, a 6-2, 195-pounder with great balance, got 38 chances and ran for 171 yards. He also grabbed a screen pass from Hart and rumbled 20 yards for a touchdown (directly over two Clemson defenders) to give the Blue Devils the lead for good in the third quarter. It was a weird game. Duke rolled up an enormous 546 yards total offense but had to E78-14, tubeless whitewalls maximum mileage, traction and durability wide, deep tread for more safety polyester cord, plus fiberglass belts 40-month nationwide wearout warranty struggle to win, mainly because the Devils met a fired-up Clemson squad that refused to bend until late. "I couldn't ask our boys to play any better than they did today," said coach Hootie Ingram.

"They went out there and played their hearts out. "I THINK we had gone backwards since our loss to Georgia Tech, but today we made some improvement. Our boys are hurt, but they gained a lot of confidence." Quarterback Tommy Ken-drick, the junior from Stone Mountain, had a sizzling day. He completed 23-of-39 passes for 244 yards, most of the Tigers offense. But the Duke defense was tough when it needed to be.

a 1 1," said Ingram, "I'd say the defense is the one thing that has made Duke a better football team this year." Duke, now 5-2 overall with losses only to Florida and Ohio State, leads the ACC with a 4-0 mark. Clemson is 2-5.
