I I 14-A ruE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION', Aug. 25, 1971 IS I SEE IT Birth day, Concentration appy i By PAUL JONES Concentration, TV's oldest and best game show, celebrates its 13ih anniversary on Wednesday, (10:30 a.m.-Ch. 2) with Atlanta's own Bob Clayton taking viewers on a backstage tour where the cast and crew will share a special birthday cake. Clayton, who has hosted 'If you would get an ironing board and put it in front of me I would calm down. That's the way I'm accustomed tolook- ing at the show over an ironing board!" Producer Blumenthal notes that during the 13-year history of Concentration, the show has awarded to contestants a great many prizes of an unusual and varied nature.

For example, the program has given away more than 1,000 vacations including a day at Coney Island, an exotic African safari and a trip to Hong Kong. Contestants have won 270 boats of all types, ranging from sail boats to cabin cruisers. Some 670 different kinds of furs have been awarded, including, a fox boa, several mink coats and a seedy racoon coat from the 1920s lined with $20 bills. Other prizes have included one of the Thousand Islands, two race horses, an airplane, and a small part in a Hollywood movie. it women contestants than men.

"Women are more readily available for a daytime show," he said. "And they comprise the greatest segment of our viewing audience. They know how to play the game and they play it with a tenacity you wouldn't believe. "Women are more aggressive. They have to mind the family budget and they know the value of a dollar.

They come on the show to play and to win. Men like the fun of the game, but don't care about the prizes. But not the girls. They're out for blood." This might explain why so many women have made Concentration's list of champions who have won nine or more contests in a row. In order for a woman to be selected as a contestant, she must have seen the show on TV.

"Just recently, Bob said, "we had a woman contestant on the show who appeared very nervous. I went over to talk to her in an effort to calm her down and she said to me, "Norm Blumenthal, producer of Concentration, designs all of of the puzzles. And he is the only person connected with the show who knows the answers. "The secrecy makes for more fun because the cameramen, lighting technicians, announcers everyone connected with the show is completely ignorant of the answers and they enjoy playing along with the contestants." Clayton, a Georgia Tech graduate, broke into TV when he hosted the old game show Make a Face. He later was the host-announcer to Georgie Jessel, Richard Boone, Jerry Lewis and scores of other top personalities in show business before going to Concentration as the show's announcer.

When Downs stepped down, he stepped up. Bob started off in Atlanta as a member of Eunice Currie's Vaudeville Group which appeared in theaters and before civic and religious groups throughout the state in the 1930s. Paul Jones I I A 1 I' la FS1 i Concentration since Hugh Downs gave up the job a couple of years ago to devote his entire time to Today, once told me that Concentration is not only the longest running game or quiz show on the air, but it is one show that is virtually rig proof.
