I THE ATI -A MA CONSTITUTION, Monday, An. 1, 1960 Miller Withdraws From Atlanta Am Hatton Spai ks Cubs' Rally In 6-2 Triumph Over Pirates LITTLER'S 273 TAKES EASTERN OPEN TITLE BALTIMORE WV-Gene Littler of Singing Hills, won the Eastern Open by chopping five strokes off par with a 67 in the final round Sunday for a 72 hole total of 273. The 30-year-old Littler, a consistent money winner since the end of April, finished 15 strokes ahead of par on the Tine Ridge course. Gary Player, the South African now playing out of Langhorne, matched Littlcr's last-round score and finished second by two strokes with 275. Al Besselink of Grossinger, N.Y., one of a trio who started the final round a stroke back of Littler, came in third with a 69 for 276.

Starter Don Cardwcll, lifted for a pinch batter in the four-run seventh, recorded" his fifth victory against 10 losses. Reliever Don Elston finished up, limiting the Pirates to one hit in the final two innings. After a shaky first inning. Haddix held the Cubs to one hit from the second to the seventh but was tagged with his seventh loss in 13 decisions. Green. PO-A-Filt bender Lester Kelly, Jerry Grecnbaum and Frank Stevenson. "Dahlbcnder's always tough," Miller said. "I have a hunch he'll be in top form for this one. "Then there's Kelly, a real fine player who hasn't won much lately.

I think he's due for a big one. "Don't overlook Greenbaum. He's one of the finest young players around. He hits the ball a long way. I think he's the daikliorse.

"And I'd have to rate Stevenson highly too. Like me, he doesn't get to play too much golf. But he can be dangerous when he's out there." The big field tees off early Monday morning in an 18-hole qualifying round. The low 32 will make up the championship flight for match play Tuesday through Friday. Tournament chairmen Rube Gunnell and Jim Clay have requested all players to call Capital City and list the approximate time they'd like to tee off.

Then pairings will be arranged. By JACK WILLIAMS There'll be no golf slam in Atlanta this Open champion Pierce Miller made that certainty Sunday when he withdrew from the City Amateur Tournament which starts Monday at Capital City. "I'm terribly sorry I can't make it," Miller said, "but I'll be tied up with business all week." Miller, once thought to be a hopeless cripple, stunned all the city experts by winning the 36-hole Open title In early summer. And he had loomed as a big threat to make it two in a row this week. "I doubt I could have won anyway," the slender East Laker said.

"I used to play in every tournament that came along. But recently, I've had to concentrate on business. As a result, my game isn't too sharp." Miller predicts it'll be a four-man fight for the championship. He lists the top contenders, not necessarily in this order, as defending champion Gene Dahl- buruh 24-16, Chii-axo 27-1.
