A location has been secured about iwelve miles from Knoxville for the National Camp-meeting, which will on the went v-lirst of (Septern-lember. Very many pious people from these jiarts" will go over to Knoxville. Since the citizens of Memphis have liwome addicted to visiting large lieer gardens on Sundays, instead of drinking uliisky, rights have Income unfrequenL Not many years since no less than seven murders occurred on one Sunday in this city; but fortunately, times are changed for the now-a-days. As there are several ersons of that name in the city, it may l- proper to mention that the initials of the party referred to are W. He was discharged for want of proof.

The Steamer A. J. She will le crowded with ladies aud gentlemen, invited on Isiard to spend an hour with Captain Cheek. Rev.

Dr. White, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, preached an eloquent -eruiou yesterday morning on "the efficacy of prayer." The sermon had reference to an article published in the Ai'l'KAL a few days ago. There was a large congregation present, embracing many isjrsous belonging to other religious denominations, and the sermon was listened to with marked attention. Mrs. A.

Gordon, M. D. that's the way the name is written wants the Appeal to say that there were many inaccuracies in the story of her misfortunes in search of lost baggage as recited by one of the city As noire of these mistakes can harm the amiable M. we can see no gain to her, and surely none for ourselves in reproducing this catalogue of corrections. It would cost too much.

We find it impossible to publish either of three excellent sermons designed to Is? produced this morning. The religious papers must furnish more of this sort of matter. The people, we lind, like a short, sharp; incisive sermon now and then, but will not take it to the exclusion of a preferred variety of secular reading matter. They don't expect such a vast deal of piety in a jsilitical journal. The last sad mark of resist was paid to the remains of Mr.

John M. Corwiue, a well-known and highly respectable job printer, who died on Saturday. The funeral was nttended try the members of the BeSoto Masonic Lodge and the Typographical I'nion of this city. The deceased having been during life an honored member of both organizations. The interment took place in JMHI wood enietcry.

a lengiiieneii communication re-i Meeting on several members of the nl 71TI1 lll Molt MW. r-r ii 11 a I 1 1 1 1 monthly meeting last Monday night has been received. As tlie proceedings have already hm published in the Appeal, and there is a meeting tonight, wneu the school book question will doubtless tie fully diw-ussed, the publication of the communication is deemed unnecessary. The work on the buildiugtor the Grand Industrial Kxjrosition which opens in October, is progressing rapidly. A large number of citizens went down to the building yesterday to note the progress made.

The Board of Mauage-ment are busily engaged in procuring subscriters to the stock required to complete the building according to the original nlans and snecirtcations. It is to be hoped that the mercantile community aud leading ciitizeus will li ial in their suliscriptions, an the Exposition is certain to prove of immense Issueflt to Memphis. The rapidity with which the Jewish population of the I nited States increase passes comprehension. They are filling everj- avenue of business and trade. Many important branches are virtually monopolized by them.

They are largely in the dry goods line, the trade in horses ami cattle, and many kind of manufactures. They are becoming our money changers and liaukers. They are flock ing into the learned professions, and and powerful. It can also be said of them, as a class, that they are good, peaceable, law-abiding citizens. An exchange says: "Gilt croquet balls, each having a colored baud to distinguish it, are very fashionable." This seems a lit tie singular.

We should think that a croquet ball which required an entire colored band, cymbal player and all, to distinguish it, must he an excessively disagreeable ball to play with if tlie player wanted to enjoy himself a great deal And then why have a fresh colored band for every ball? Say there are eight balls in a game. lien there would be just that number of musical organizations, and the assemblage would resemble a colored picnic or a Republican ratitication meeting rather than a quiet pleasure party. But if it is fashionable, of course there is no use of complaining about it. Some people would be in the fashion if they had to drag tlie whole continent of Africa around by a string every time they went out of the house. The little affair of Needham's that some of the papers have been telling about, certainly was unpleasant at least for Needham.

Needham owned a deep-mouthed watch-dog which always 1 ii.v.it him welcome home," and snatched mouthfuis of chops out 01 the legs of strangers. Needham took that faithful animal along with him one day to watch his clothes while he went in swimming. iNeeanain uaineu ior an hour, and the dog meanwhile went to sleep on eedham garments. When N'eedhani came out the dog did not recognize him 111 ins nude condition, and refused to let him come near the irarments. Every tirue Needham would grab for a suspender or a sock the dog Mould bite a moutlitul out of his arm or leg, and whenever Needham made a Jive for a Isjot or an undershirt that ani mal would seize him by the calf and shake him.

So Needham stood there in the sun pretty nearly roasted, and he pent the afternoon dodging in aud out the water to avoid the Dorcas societies anil female students at the boarding school, aud the factory girls coming town the road. At last, when the dog went to sleep, Needham crept liehind hi in, caught him suddenly by tlie tail mil flung him across the stream. Jielore the dog could swim back, Needham got most of his clothes upon his bleeding body aud limbs, and the dog came sidling up to him, looking as if he expected to be rewarded for 1ns extraordinary vigil atice. ha- ilisoosed ol that Jog he has traded it off for a litter of 'ull pups. And yet they say that the is man's most taitlilul friend: iseed ham doesn't think he is.

It does not often occur in the quiet life of a devout minister of the Gospel, intent only upon doing good, that one whose feelings revolted at every appeal to the sensational should, bv the power of a holy life, and the serene light of a i heaven-given genius, to himself the eyes and the hearts of men, as did the remarkable being whose name heads this article. There are those in Memphis, some outside of that particular church with which he was connected, that remember the gifted preacher and profound thinker, to whom John C. Calhoun and (ieorge Bancroft paid such tributes of respect and admiration. There are those still living who were present at a diuner in the house of Hon. W.

F. IVssaussure, of South Carolina, wheu the distinguished historian of the United Slates held an enthusiastic colloquy with the learned Divine upon the Greek historiaus, and remember the look of delighted admiration upon the face of Mr. Bancroft, while the Doctor recited, impromptu, splendid passages from Ihucydides, in the original Creek. His attainments in metaphysical phi- losopuy were probably equalled by no man of this age, save the late Sir Wil liam Hamilton, exteudingtoa thorough and familiar acquaintance with Plato and Aristotle 111 their native speech, to the subtle discussions of medieval schools, and to the speculations of Is-ke's disciples au their antagonists in Scotland, ranee and (jerinauy. His mastery of logic, as taught by all the ancient and modern masters was as minute as if that scieuce alone had claimed his attention.

SMcuiative theology, as discussed by Homanist and Protestant, Pateists, Calvinists, Armenians, Sociuians, or Rationalists, was so familiar to his universal mind, could not name an author with whom he was not acquainted. While his wonderful memory retained Milton's Paradise Lost, and Shakespeare's chief dramas, so perfectly that he was able, be said, to recite line by hue, and scene by scene, what he had learned in early life to him thorough com-maud of the English language. It is to be regretted that death cut off this splendid intellect in mid-career, and tietore it hail shaped a fair uropor-tion of its rich treasures into form for transmission to posterity. But he left behind him enough to nil us with mingled gratitude and regret. These memorials of one of America's most gifted sons, are being gathered by Drs.

Adger, of South Carolina, and Palmer, of New Orleans, into volumes bearing the title, The Collected Writing of Jame Hen-leu ThornwrM, D. LL. Late Pro- fenr of Theology, etc." We have on our table critical notices from the Ijoiidon Weekly Review, and from the Reformed Presbyterian Wit-neM, ot Scotland, which speak words of discerning praise concerning these two volumes the most complete and elegant, says oue of these foreign reviewers, that have come from an American j. And the call is made for a British edition. These books may be ordered through Henry Wade, or any of our booksellers.

There is also a Christian lady, earning a support for her little ones, who will deliver the volume at publishers' prices. Mil NCIIOOI. BOARD. "CHARLEY, I HAVE COME FOR BUSINESS." Before Mr. Tozer could reply, Walker drew a pistol and fired directly at Tozer, who was leaning his left arm on the counter between two show-cases.

The bullet struck the sleeve-button of his shirt, fractured one of the small bones of the arm, glanced off and struck him in the breast, but only made a slight abrasion of the skin. Walker AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO FIRE, but his pistol snapped, and he rushed out of the store and ran round the alley, where he was captured by the police ind taken to the Causey street station- house and locked up. A large crowd soon collected, and all were surprised at the narrow escape which Mr. Tozer had I made, which certainly was oue of tlie most miraculous on record. There were various rumors on the street as to the cause of tlie affray, and it was nubliciv reported that several mouths since Tozer had enticed walker's wife to leave mm, and nan succeeded 111 keeping them separated ever since.

There was also a rumor that this was the second time Walker had attempted his life. On Saturday a sister-in-law of Walker called at the drug store and in formed Tozer that Walker had threat ened TO SHOOT HIM ON SIGHT, but he paid little attention to the mat ter, and did not even arm himself. The entire matter will be investigated before the rcecoraer this morning. RIVER INTELLIGENCE. Boats Leaving To-Day.

To tlie Board of Education: In common with all other citizens who have children in our schools, and who wish for their prosperity, we are looking with deep interest to your action to-night on the text book question. Your duty to provide books for our schools tbat are uusectional, unpartisan and unsectarian, is obvious. This has not hitherto been done. You may find such books with the name of any book- publisher in the title-page, and yet you know that the same publisher's name can found in books that are most offensive, the very names of some publishers have become sectional. Your own body may wrangle for a year over what constitutes a sectional book" and yet in tlie end offend some of your fellow-citizens.

But iu adopting the books of "The I'niversity Series" you can but please Catholic and Protestants, Confederates and Federals. The American Booksellers' Guide tor August of the present year, says of these books: "The utirely unHectional and and unpartisan character of the books of 'Tlie I'niversity Series' is giving them great popularity in all parts of the country." lou cannot give to your fellow-citizens any Isjtter evidence ofJ vour intention, in this regard, to discharge your duty to them impartially taking inese imtoks, ami mus Editors Appeal Will you please permit me to answer an article appearing in the Memphis RepuNican, of the fifteenth instant, which is headed Something for colored men to reflect on." It is stated that at least two thousand colored men voted the Democratic ticket. This may be true, and if they did it was against my wish or desire; but when such a detestible creature as the editor of that sheet has, with two other Republicans, betrayed my people, I am not surprised they would seek any political alliance iustead of those associates who have proved false to them for sev eral years. Language is hardly adequate to express in print the im positions that have been practiced uiion us by these political scoundrels. That editor has, before this community, added to his catalogue of crimes a long series of confessions of guilt.

When he came from Washington, a few years ago, he said to all Republicans that he rotested against the appointment of Ir. De Loach as Postmaster, and re cently he claimed that he (Mr. DeLoach I was appointed upon his recommendation. He, with hupo- critical Republicans, sold my people and our best class of Republi cans to the Senter movement ind the State of Tennessee passed from our hands. A creature so often charged ith all classes of outrages is hardly worthy of notice, tie claims be a Republican, and in this wav, he reaches a class 01 By jieople aud de rives them.

He adds in his dirty pa H-r, that Kd. whaw, and other colored men at great wages carried the 10th and 7th wards to the Democratic party. In this he wilfully misstates the facts for he, Smith, did not present himself at the polls except a few to vote. of all they possessed, is a base wretch, and all he may utter is unworthy of notice, for he cannot speak the truth. hv does he not attack those who openly opposed and worked against us, and not vent his vituperation upon lioes he tninis ne can crush me because I am a colored man? If so, it only car ries out the charge 1 prefer against him. He is a political knave, a juggler and fraud. Respectfully, edwakd bhaw. lltK JlWPslfr" Curious Interruption of Religious Services.

Last night a young man who wanted muchly to see his sweetheart went to her residence. She was at a church not far away, and the youthful swain hired a venerable intensely black dame, who is utterly invisible at midnight, and therefore is regarded a ghostess throughout Sodom, to go into the church aud bring forth the damsel. The old woman hesitated for a time, but she could not resist the importunities of the boy, and entered the church wheu the preacher was pronouncing a sort of premonitory prelude to his eloquent sermon. The negress is very tall. Her eyes are very large and project from her head like the horns of an antelope.

Her lips are thick aud curled, and when she is absorbed in thought she soHlotmizes, aud the shutters flop up and down and back and forth over the great orifice in her head with marvelous velocity. She was in a brown study when she entered the brilliantly-lighted church. She muttered her troubled, anxious tboughte. In low-accents the words flopped over and over and rolled out upon the still evening air, "Whar's Miss Jinny?" "Whar's Miss Jinny?" Her protuberant eyes assumed an unnatural luster, and one was projected to the right and the other to the left, as the tall enchantress of a startled congregation went rocking and swinging herself like a pendulum down the crowded aisle "Whar's Miss Jinny? Oh! Whar Miss Jinny?" The good preacher sub sided till Miss Jinny could be discovered. was tound, and when the amazed.

dumfouuded girl stood up and the Africun clapped her hands exclaiming, "Bar's she!" Miss Jinny at death's door. She was chagrined, amazed, shocked that she was thus stared at by such a multitude. But there was 110 helu for it. The good negress had discovered and would never leave her. Her head swam, and more dead than alive, leaning on the arm of the old mieen of the kitchen.

she glided out into the silent street. We were not there to see or hear, but if Jinny's sweetheart did not catch It he may anticipate a life of endless re pose, and Jinny's amiability is faultless. Tlie preacher was not so generous. He evidently wanted to say that nothing but a hrst-class funeral could justify such an invasion of a church at such an hour by such a phantom.
