RAILROAD NEWS. The Saw Irleaaa, Jaek-oa northern Stad. The Canton Mall men'.

Ions a rumor that It la In contemplation by the man-tgers of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern railroad to lay a double-track to (tcodman and diverge from tha. point to Kosciusko. The Leader la concerned about a rumor that the divergence la to be made from Durant, laaaavUle Alr-Lfae. General P. Neely, president of the Memphis and Knoxville Air-Line railroad, has instructed the engineer corps to commence the preliminary survey and location of the line, beginning a few mile from Memphis, and tnence to the Tennessee river, near Savannah.

The surveying party begins ita work tbts week. Fayette, Hardeman, McNairy and Hardin counties are working earnestly for the road, by private and oounty subBcriptiona, and the prospects are very na teriug lor the eo ni Dletii ton oi the road within eighteen months. Ties Little Back Boad. The Forrest City limes thus refers to the change of gauge on the Memphis road: "The work ot changing the gauge on the Memphis snd Little Rock railroad was began on last Saturday and completed on Monday. Trains are now running regularly, The new engines are the perfection of machinery, and the passenger coaches are gotten up in the fines', style imaginable.

Too much praise cannot be awarded the company, and especially the efficient superintendent, Colonel A S. Liver more, for their eflorts to make the road one of the best in the country. By February the grading will be finished, snd the trains will bs able to make fast tiaas between Hoped aid snd Little Boos. Cotton can now be shipped, aa the company are distributing oars at the different points on the road." rnaaEerlasHl and Ohio Boad. The Louisville L-dger of Tuesday says that i be contractors, Messrs.

Myers it of Louisville, will commence work on the Ohio and Cumberland railroad within the next ten or fltteen days. It is understood that work will first commence on the proposed tunnels at Qreensburg and at Muldrougb's Hill. The Mul-drough' Hill tunnel will be eighteen hundred feet in length, and the Greensburg only alx hundred feet. After passing Muldrough's Hill south the route to Greensburg, through Tyler county and a portion of Green, is very favorable, over an easy grade, and can be very oheaply built. The approach to the Greensburg tunnel are more dlffloult, but by skillful and careful engineering many difficulties bave bren overcome at a saving of under former estimates.

It la now dearly demonstrated that the proposed route from Worthvllle to Greensburg can be made at a cost Immensely below the cost of any other road that has been made in Kentucky. Indeed the ac' ual contract with Myers A show this. It will pass through a muoh wealthier portion of the State than the Louisville and Nashville road, or its Knox-vlll branch, and as a consequence Its local business will be greater. It wsa arranged at the Lebanon meeting that the ciounlies along the line ot the road were to simultaneously Issue their bonds tor the respective amount of stock subscribed bv a vote ot the people some months ago So it would seem that the prospect of this road soon reaching Tennessee Is uncom monly promising. AMUSEMENTS.

Taa Burns Fbstival. The celebration of the one hundred and thirteenth anniversary of Burna's birthday was duly CBltfOratttu uy iu a' uiirtjj 01 tuaw pueb, by a ball in the Waldrau block last night. ri'ere was a goodly attendance ot ladies and gentlemen, and much enjoyment, The programme, which wsa an extempore anatr, embraced dancing, recitation, i supper, and speeches, lhere never wai gathered In sny hall, salon or drawing room a plessanter party, and never was so muoh pleasure compressed Into so short a time as was enjoyed by those who had the singular good fortune to participate In the present festive occasion. Dancing commenced early. During the evening, Mr.

Shiels delivered "Tarn O'Shanter" in auperb style. The piece is a difficult one to recite, but Mr. Shlela did full justice to ths weird yet humorous poem, the grotesque creation of an exbuberant fancy, and the pUadits of the accomplished audience that listened to him were but a proper tribute to his very successful effort. Our Colonel Alexander was m'er of cere monies. Here he shone wrh unutuai splendor, and contributed no little to the enjoyment of the evening by removing all sorts of Ice.

He was not content with breaking it, but be dissolved It altogether and helped the most timid and bashiul to feel at home. Ths supper was ss merry as any part of the pleasantries of the evening The whole thing was emphati cally aucceceful. PERSONAL. J. E.

bv the rirst it October. On Wednesday night the contracts for ihe supply of machinery and pipes to complete -the water supply system of Memphis were periectea oetween the mpany and certain companies of the North, which were represented here by their agents. For the machinery and hydrants the contract was made with the Holly waterworks company of Lock port, New York, and for pipe and the laying thereot the contract was made with Gay-lor A of Cincinnati, who will have twenty-two miles of pipe laid by the mid dle of June. The necessary machinery and hydrants from the Holly works will not be ready to go Into operation until the first ol October. It la guaranteed that on that day the city shall receive a beautiful supply through all Its mains and supply pipes al any desired pressure.

Mr, tiouy himself and Mr. svetcnum are at present in the city making the necessary surveys for ths location of their machinery. The delay in the construction ot the machinery la due to fact that while we were debating and scrambling among ourselves about these waterworks other oilles were making arrangements to get the Holly system into operation, and so many orders ere ahead ot us that we have to wait to take our turn. However, It Is better late than never. When the works go into opera lion there will be ei Joy ment enough re-altud to ompenaate us for our long-suffering and Job-like patience.

We shall get clear water and plenty of it. The blessings of dear water may be realised. and such of us as are addicted to profan ity may be tempted to copy after an Ar-kansian, who, with his family, was re cently traveling on the Uherleston rail- ioad. and having occasion to go to the cooler, drew out cupful of the sparklirg fi aid and was so astonished at the coolness and purity of the pellucid draught that he turned round to his wife and exclaimed. His Imperial Highness, Alexis, Grand Duke, colonel In the srmy and lieutenent in the navy of Russia, a grand cross of many orders, will leave at. Louis for Memphis on the Great Republic on Hat urday next. The St. Louis Republican of Wednesday said Thursday, bat as the steamer only passed up yesterday, It would be impossible lor the boat to start before the last day of the week.

Captain Thorwegan, commanding the Great tlt public, says that no expense has been spared on this floating river palace to make the trip ot tho Duke by river to New Otleans pleasant and agreeable. The boat will be the private property of the Grand Ducal party until their arrival at New Orleans. Besides visiting OTJB CITY, They will make short stops at Vicks- burg, Natchez and other towns along the river, and spend several days in tne urea osnt City, whence Alexis will take a "new departure" and do the South, visiting Mobile and other oities. As an earnest of the greeting that awaits him in the "GULF OTTT," we publish the following from a rhymer In the Mobile Register, who seems to be quite exhilarated over the achievements of T. Alexis killed a buffalo Hurrah! hurrah! hur rah! Alexis shot a buffalo and cabled to the Czar, The message o'er tbe wires has flashed.

The brass bands at tbe news have cm-- ad And Bison though be now Is haahu Should thank his lucky star. Alexis killed a Bison! Oh! happy buffalo! By royal hands and royal ball from this dull world to go. How envied, then, should be your fate For history will record the date When this young dating potentate Tour shaggy head laid low. Alexis shot a buffalo! Now let the tidings fly And Russia's capital will greet the news with gladsome cry, While Gotham, in its crowded halls. Will speak of both the Urnnd Duke's balls.

While every newsboy loudly calls To know "How's that tor H. Alexis sbot a buffalo and Europe "HowT" Why, just like any man would shoot an Inoffensive cow. You gallop to the creature's side And out a bullet In its hide And then away exulting ride And cool your heated brow. Alexis killed a buffalo! Just think of it, ye belles! And you. New Yorkers, young and old, most dazzling, stuunine swells.

Ah! Fashion now will seek to find How it can form a hump behind. Ho it can always bear in mind The plains where Bison dwells. Alexia killed a buffalo! Kish. Now let high oaten a That, seasoned well with Boutwell's aauoe. will make a spicy dish For, far off In the frigid zones Poor Catacazy often groans With olgglsh fish we make no bones.

But Grant them what they wish. Treating of this subject and his visit to tbe plaine, the Grand Duke says buffalo hunting and bear hunting has somewhat of Its dangers as well as its intense ex cltement, Just onough to make It Interesting, We wonder much what he would say after a catfish hunt in the Mississippi By ail means let us afford him the oppor tunity. Our "oats" and "gars" are not to be surpassed In size or voracity by those ol any other waters, and are fat enough to cheat the yrung Russian into the belief that In successful hunt ot them he had STBC0K ILa. Alexis is a plain, straightforward young fellow, and despises toadyism, especially the American form of if, and we believe would rather go on the aforesaid cattish bunt or a bear hunt In the St. Francis bottom, than attend all the balls In chris tendom.

As marking bis appreoia.ion ot this style of thing, and of those who pur sue it, a contemporary aays that Buffalo Bill waa presented by the Duke with a large purse of money and a very valuable aoarl-pin, which the great hunter will doubtless fasten his breeches wltb, for upper garments he has none. Alexis has an increasing admiration for tbe plains and the wild mbr who hunt there, for we are told that in tbe grand buffalo bunt upon Republican river, wherein he proved himself so gallant a Nimrod. tbe honors were awarded to the mus-ular prowess of the Indian warriors BUI" especially) who took part in the ohaae. It la easy enougb, with repeated shots from a rifle, to bring down the stouest buffalo; but to "go through" the animal with an arrow Is an exploit whioh indicates a prodigious strength of arm and chest. This is what he Indians present did, to the great astonishment of the young Russian, who saw with aurprlse the shafts, sped from the bows In their hands, enter at one side of the huge beasts and whiz to the distance of several yards ont of the other.

The phyaloal strength that can achieve such a result must, Indeed, be extraordinary, and recall? some ol tbe donbtful tories bold of Robin Hood, Little John, and he merry men of Sherwood Forest." Ai. x.s. is no doubt, splendid fellow. A blonde of "purest ray, serene," you know he is "serene highness" as well as imperial, be will no doubt, captivate our dame da soctefi as completely as he did "Buffalo BUi," who you also know Is "chip" of ths old block. Feted in all the large oities, he comes to Memphis to "BKK AND Happy fellow, happier far than the lucky fell the lottery made rich.

He will be received by the mayor and a committee of the general council, and escorted to apartments prepared for him at the Peabody hotel, where be will rest, perhaps, and perbape he won't, for you know "society" will be there to see. After the formal re ception he will be taken to see the sights, and will then receive a deputation otoiti- asns who will invite him to a grand ball to be given at the Overton hotel, for which Mr. I rtoblns is making ample prepara tions. After he LKAVBS MEMPHIS he will visit all the villages between this snd New Orleans, thence to Mobile, thence to Montgomery, and by rail to Louisville, taking the Mammoth oave in the way. In Louisville, the Ledger ssys "preparations have been set ou foot to give them a grand reception, including one of the most magnificent balls, at the Gait house, that has ever been witnessed in this country.

from persons now with the Duos! party indicate that tbe visit will be made about tbe last of this or the first of next week. The mayor and other leading oltiaans hsve telegraphed cordial invitations to the party, and a favorable answer is expected today or to-morrow. So that the BBLLkS OF LOUISVILLB and there are few of our ladies, married or single, who are not belles, of whose grace, and beauty, and modesty, and virtue, and Intelligence we are Justly proud may felicitate themselves on the probability that they will get to see the royal young Rubs, and can satisfy their curiosity as to how live piinoe from the icebound regions of Northern Su-ope looks snd beats himself. Public spirited oltiaans do not so abound In Cincinnati aa to render it necessary to name tbe fifty, A committee ol them waited upon the Burnett house yesterday to see if ths proprietors could better the usual accommodations any In the event of Alexis' sdvent. And so, perhaps, we are to see the handsome blooded dragoon after all. Leaving Cincinnati he will Journey rapidly to New York, and there Isavs for horns, where he has promised to meet ths "oraok" BMSRJOaJl YACHTS In May and June. The Philadelphia Enquirer, good authority on Alexia, "or any othsr man," says: "Alexis, notwithstanding his proclivity for slaughtering Dtuieioea ana bears, is a sailor, and, in the oapaolty ol mariner, Invited the Nsw York Yacht olub to send a squadron of their bast vessels to Russia during the next yacht season. As ths Grand Duks himself promised to be at home to reoeive our yacbtmen, the invitation was accepted and, if the Fish-Oatacssy business doss not terminate in a suspension of dlplo-nuatio relations between the Osar and ourselves, the greatest International yacht expedition that ever weighed anchor will sail from tbe shores of the United Stales next summer.

As there are oops to be contended for, the great rival of American yachts, Commodore Ashbory, will not participate to protest and see fair play." As evidence that the venerea. treatment and cordial reosD- lisn of Alexis is thoroughly APPBKOIATKD In his own country we append tbe following from the New York Herald, wiiuah says: "The Journal de St. Petersburg, a recent issue, speaks In the most congratulatory terms of the reception so-corded to Prince Alexis by the people of the United States. It ssys all Russia feels grateful snd will never forget it, and further sdds: 'The pesos of the irtd and the progress of humanity will be promoted by an entente eordiale between Russis sn the United States."
