Fish Co. have sweet potatoes for sale. Tiie illustrious Major Green is in town en route to Oregon. A large Eastern mail via California may be expected here on Monday morning. Hungry mortals should read about and try the Union Restaurant.

See advertisement. Governor Safford left on Thursday for the mining section about Calabasas. He expects to b3 back in about ten days. The finest assortment of candies ever brought to Tucson, have this week been opened up at the store of Lord Williams. P.

Megert. from near Tubac, was in town early this week with Irish potatoes, lor which he found ready sale at ten cents per pound. He planted but three-quarters of an acre, gave the crop scarcely any attention, and harvested 8,000 pounds. Thursdat alternoon was marked by high winds and clouds of dust before Friday morning rain came dashing down in the valleys, and snow on the adjacent mountains. December is usually the coldest month, but thus far it has been very mild for Winter even in this latitude.

The benefits of advertising was strikingly -illustrated last week by the receipt at this office of two numbers of The Citizen, called for by a local notice some two months ago. The point is, that the notice was observed by Laura A. Ott, a sister of Sheriff Ott, in Greenwich, N. who sent the desired papers. While wc return thanks for the papers, we can't lorego a suggestion to people in want of most anything especially customers.

A partt of prospectors from the Gila and upper parts of the Territory came to town this week. They were short of sup plies, and in a fow hours' exertion among the Tucson people, Governor Safford raised means to supply them with plenty of pro visions, and they have gone into the Hua- chuca mountains. This is a very liberal community in aiding legitimate development of the surrounding country, and but lor the wolul insecurity to lile and property, productive mining properties of vast proportions would now be in operation near Tucson. Citt Council Proceedings. The Council met on the 18th, and without doing any business adjourned until the next evening at 5Jp.

S. Court. He is one of the good officers of the army; very desirous to exert all his powers to give safety to the Territory; anxious for lield service; believes thoroughly in using Indians as aids in subduing the hostile ones: and of as rapidly as possible convincing ail the Indians that they will receive honest, kind treatment lor honest and just oenavior; and quick, proper punishment for any other. He believes in lull justice to tne Indian, but has no attachment for the tear- over-indulgcut processes. Mr.

and Mrs. E. N. Fish completed the tenth year of a happy married life last Tuesday. Two splendid children, financial prosperity and an unusually agreeable life have been the principal products of the marriage.

Beyond some presents between themselves, no ceremonies were prepared for or expected by them on that day but a number ot their friends quietly decided on a tin wedding, and had it a complete surprise to the ten-year old bride and groom. Among the gifts were a tin cane, hat, slippers, spectacles, 'set-of durls, etc. The affair was new to Tucson, and one of the happiest social gatherings ever assembled here. It cost the lively groom some wine and string music, but in return he and wife got, besides the useless and useful tinware, a good deal of vocal music, dancing, and some extraordinary outbursts of wit and eloquence entirely too much for description here. Samuel Hughes has received from n.

C. Hooker, now in San Francisco, a return of 5,744 pounds of ore from the Lee Scott mine, worked by mill process and roasted in a Stedefelt furnace. The ore was actually an average and not a select lot from the mine, taken with special reference not to mislead the interested parties who are not offering the mines for sale, and the result shows a trille over 55 to ton. This is regarded in San Francisco as an excellent yield. Mr.

nooker and others own an extension to the Lee Scott, and are determined to go right ahead and procure title, as they also intend doing to the Montezuma, some thirty miles south of Tucson. Recently some laborers were sent to the latter mine to work, but finding the tools stolen, the bellows and fixtures all cut up and destroyed by the Iudians, they returned. But the owners are determined to go ahead with the development. Mr. Hooker writes encouragingly, and thinks he may return here soon.

Greenbacks were buying at 91 and selling at 91, on tho 12th in San Francisco. Some of the Actors. The crowded state of our, columns has heretofore and does now prevent appropriate mention of the services of counsel in the recent trial of 100 persons for killing Apaches last April. It would be an easy task to write a score of columns on that trial, and here and there fitly mention Messrs. J.

E. McCtiffry and Gr. H. Oury, volunteer attorneys for the defense, (as well as the originally bloodthirsty but finally tame IT. S.

District Attorney for the prosecution). Messrs. McCaffry and Oury entered upon their work in the case and conducted it to a successful end with a spirit of honor and zeal that no amount of money could have improved. Unlike the ordinary trials for murder, the defendants were anxious that all facts should be known and nothing concealed, and actually prolonged the case to elicit the whole truth which amply justified the verdict of acquittal. Participants not indicted, willingly swore to all the facts.

Both attorneys labored with zeal and ability to have nothing bearing upon the case concealed. It is one of the most remarkable trials on record, and Messrs. McCaffry and Oury may always point to their part in it with neighborly and professional pride. Samuel Hughes Esq. figured conspicuously.

He is entitled to great credit, especially in having the Papa-go Indians present, with whom no man has a higher or better influence. If the contemptible Howell's actions and sayings in the case were all known at "Washington, he would there be as heartily despised as he justly and truly is by forty-nine fiftieths of the people of Pima county. Immediately after stepping off tho witness stand in this case, a prominent and responsible citizen told him that he swore to a lie, and he did not resent it. Need' we say more of the thing? Thorough Collection. Sheriff Ott has made, we believe, an unparalleled close collection of tuxc3.

We ask the good Sacramento Union of May and September (not of November and December), to look at these facts, blush if it pleases, and then turn loose on the border ruffians of Arizona. Attorney General Ackormau resigned his commission to tho President on the 14th, and Ex-Senator Geo. H. Williams of Oregon was immediately-appointed and confirmed for tho vacancy. Aside from the personal satisfaction we have in this appointment, we regard it a very wise choice by President Grant.

Senator "Williams is at one a great and good man. Captain Gerald Russell, witfc as Troop Third Cavalry, arrived hereon Thursday en route for Fort McPhertkn, Nebraska. He goes ahead to-day. retain Russell is one of the most valua le ollicers in the service, especially in act re field' duty. He has had many brusI.K with the Apaches, and more than ordiiu ry success.
