Freemasonry In this city and is deeply interested in an apron a member of the Blue Lodge which appears to have 'been the one worn by George Washington as a member of the lodge at Alexandria, Va It has just come into the possession of Jay C. Saltzgiver, and is being exhibited in the display window of his antique store at 225 North Second street. While there seems to be no doubt that the apron actually is the one worn by General Washington in his Masonic duties, it is not accompanied by any certificate of any sort, and members of the craft Avho have viewred the relic are endeavoring to find an absolute clue. The apron, of the regulation sheepskin and common size and shape, has every appearance of great age. It dif fers from the ilasonic aprons commonly seen nowadays in that it is emblazoned with the varioua insignia of the Masons, whereas the modern aprons customarily are of spotless white without any figuring whatever.

The various figures on the Washington aoron are engrsTved in colors. The apron is unaer glass in a neavy frame; tho frame, proDamy an excellent piece of workmanship in its day, would be styled gmgerbready" or something else nowadays; Mr. Saltzgiver says the frame is at least sixty years old, and this is borne out by the details of the framing. History of the Apron Under the glass, above the apron itself, is a printed slip, yellowed with age. It looks as if it were a proof slip from a job office, set up and printed for the purpose.

It reads: "Masonic Apron. "Owned and orn by General George Washington in the Masonic Harrisburg, VejjeViyaeM Every Telephone Town Connects Directly With The Want Ad. Short moved to Penn sylvania and made his home at Center ville, Cumberland county. The apron has Just been handed to Mr. Saltzgiver by heirs of Dr. Short who ar settling his estate and who have com missioned the Harrisburg man to dispose of the relic. Is It Genuine? The design of President Washington's apron is familiar to all members of the craft and to many laymen, for pictures of it often are distributed as Masonic souvenirs and for other purposes.

Frequently pictures are seen of Washington wearing the apron. Local Masons are unwilling to admit or deny the authenticity of the relic. None seem to know whether or not the usual Masonic custom of bury ing the apron with a deceased member was followed in the case of the first President or not. and they are endeavoring to get all the data they can. It has been suggested that tha frame be opened in hopes of finding further information and this will ba done if the present owners consent.

It is a coincident that the apron was turned over to Mr. Saltzgiver last Mondav. December 14. the anniversary of the original owner's death In 17a..
